2 million different people use boards in a month. 1.3 million of them within Ireland.
Allowing 300k for duplicates from work and home, that's still about 1million users across Ireland.

That's what, 1 in 3 adults in Ireland? Loads of people use it and never mention it. We were name checked like, 15 times in a recent Dail debate and no one said "sorry... Who?"

Oh and I see Princess Peach hasn't come back about my question, so I'm calling bullsh*t on her post... Not unusual I guess.

Yep they do one of them found me on here I dont know how and told everyone, and some fo them tend to have a little spy on my account from time to time so if youre looking hi ;).

I know some of them are on here to but dont know there usernames.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Mods do NOT have access to personal details with only one or two specific exceptions for specific reasons.

They can tell if two accounts have matching IPs but not what that IP *is*. They don't see email addresses at all.

If PP didn't want to be challenged in public about this, she shouldnt have made the boast in public. This is transparency in action cos I want people to see me challenge this publically and call bollox on it, cos if it's true, that mod is getting the boot.

My friends and family all know I'm a member and most would know my username. I know my dad is a member because I made him set up his own account after he kept using mine to post pics and pm people race pix which was just invasive.

Apart from promoting the Martial Arts forum's through meeting people in the club, or at competitions I don't advertise the fact that I'm 'Makikomi' from boards.ie

However a lot of people have recognized me away boards, and I'll always own up - its fun because probably 99% of the time they skirt around asking me if I really have a swastika tattoo on my chest :D

DeVore I think that was your first question too :p

No but I nearly came out as a boardsie yesterday, I nearly said it, I am a boardsie and proud, but I thought better of it and remained in the closet.

Nah I couldn't really give a sh!t to be honest. But I sometimes get the impression I know certain boardsies in the 3D world.

I sure hope none of my friends know my username on here... Although I know my best friends dad posts on boards. I'm not sure of his username though. Maybe if I start sleeping with a mod he'll share that kinda private information with me.

Some mods can see personal information?
I will be closing my original account on here, don't trust the site any more. No offence to yourself Dev,you are a great guy. I have enjoyed this place.

This is not the first time PP has bragged about having inside information, perhaps it's her Bf who should explain if it was him, he is a mod after all, she has made no secret of this.

I think pretty much all my friends know I'm on boards and know my username.

I know a few Boardsies in person, and they obviously know my username.

I know 3 of my friends use boards every now and then but I only know one of their usernames.

A couple do, and are regularish posters. For some reason though, when I'm in public and I mention something I saw on boards to a friend or whatever, I get really paranoid and speak quietly!

While I think the way you're dealing with this issue (as transparently as possible) is great perhaps it's best to discuss the issue with PP first.

I know it's an issue you take very seriously but PP could feel it has suddenly turned into a witch-hunt against her which would make resolving it much more difficult.

I think it was a passing comment on her behalf. I don't think she meant anything by it and didn't realise it's an issue you, and Boards.ie, take extremely seriously and would follow up.

We all tell fibs on the internetz, don't take it personally or make her Public Enemy #1 over it.

I hadn't even been on thread! I remembered that I was asking a mod could they do it and then found him cause he had his name as his username so it my mistake correlating the two events to be the same. It was right when I joined so my memory was fuzzy and I didn't think!

Sorry for being stupid and causing hassle!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,559 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

I was in the pub one night, and one of my friends turned to me and asked if I was on boards, cos he came across a thread about something local & having read a post on the subject, thought that it was something I would have said. He was spot on as well, even though the comment was from 2006 or so. Only thing he didnt have correct was the username spelling.

Just to add a little something to this - on Thursday I'm actually attending a conference on Data Protection. It's something we take extremely seriously and never joke about. Ever. A passing comment by anyone saying (even mistakenly) that a Mod did something to reveal any information means a full investigation and depending on how serious the issue, a potential legal case because maybe we've got a breach of the Data Protection Act on our hands. It's *that* serious.

The inner workings of this site have been audited by the Data Protection Commissioner's office and they are more than happy with how we treat your data and how the tools we put at Mods disposal to run the site function without compromising any sensitive data.

So forgive us for being sensitive on this issue, but at the end of the day it's YOUR data we're worrying about.

I wouldn't care to be honest, what I spend my time talking posting thoughts comments, it's a modern day form of communication..

People make friends on face book for mafia wars or farm vil... Thats ok but god help me because i share my thoughts with strangers I've never meet before...

Learn new things weather its about computers or the best way to do a job on car..

Its all circumstantial we don't live in the 20th century and even in the 20th century there were forums. These days theirs tons...
Its not shame full its just a modern day life, I mean some of people I've meet on boards are like i speak to them at least once a week there my friends...

You can't be ashamed because you post on forum how?

My friends would say if your meeting new people having a good time then whats the problem.. If they didn't they wouldn't be my friends....

    I haven't :)

I haven't been on boards long, so no one really knows, though I've mentioned some of the things from here in general conversation. But I have found at least 3 people I know on here.... I suppose if certain people are into certain things, it make them easy to pick out!

I don't really attract much attention on here, nor do I post anything that would cause outrage if anyone knew who I was but it's reassuring to know that our privacy is taken seriously by the site. :)

I have told a few friends that I'm on here but they claim to only ever lurk and aren't interested in my username. I'm sure whenever they do lurk though, they'd be on more useful forums than AH, no offence to all you lovely people. :p

Some do, some don't....I'm pretty much the same online as I am offline, so I'm not too bothered who knows.

I do love having the "wait...you're a boardsie too?!" conversation with friends sometimes....especially when they start to worry have they said something slightly untoward to me...:D

I just found out about a week ago that my sister posted here a bit, I don't think she knows I do but it doesn't matter very much to me.

I think the odd person in my life probably knows I post here, from the occasional time when I'd show them things from Cool Vids & Pics & Links. I haven't posted anything very self-incriminating or anything secretive (which would be a bit silly) so I certainly wouldn't conceal the fact.

Yeah friends know, but not my username.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

I think about three friends have found me on boards, though my profile is pretty open so it's not surprising.

One boardsie I met ages ago, through a non-boards related event, I eventually twigged who it was though I'm not sure if they remember me!

I also figured out who a boardsie was through something they posted that rang a bell, so it can be pretty easy to find someone on here by accident!

I've got the odd PM from friends wondering if it's me and that but most of my friends wouldn't be on here, they have real lives.
