I've been inspired to start this thread after having a good but not amazing sea food chowder in An Pucan last weekend. I really enjoyed the thread on the best pudding/sausages in Galway.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=75179592

    So hear goes

Tasty seafood chowder with only Salmon and a small amount of white fish. Cost 6.95.

Best I had was in Roundstone so not a city location.
Very chunky with lovely brown bread on the side.

The best 9 euro ever spend.
It was topped with 4-5 muscles as well.

 Not sure I'd want muscles in my chowder.... I'd rather have mussles :D

The Radisson has the best one I've tasted yet, but to be honest chowder is very handy to make yourself. Pick the ingredients to suit and off you go.

the Huntsman - hands down (galway city only)

Had the chowder in Ardbia and was very disappointed. Was way to salty and pretty much fish free.

Moran's of the Weir is my favourite to date.

What is a good chowder though?

I dislike chowders that really are nothing but highly-salted fish-flavoured cream with a few bits of farmed salmon and "smoked" haddock thrown in.

Gotta say Donnellys in Barna is brilliant chowder. Went there yesterday for a meeting and a few of the people I was with ordered a chowder between them after they saw a bowl. Bread is class also

€9 on a bowl of chowder is ridiculous. Personally I'm not a fan of muscles or mussels in my chowder.

Had a really good bowl in Donnelly's recently.

The fish mongers in the Galway Shopping Centre is unreal, €3 for a good size portion.

Salmon in chowda doesn't work...too oily! Plus I'm a chowda snob.

I find the chowder in Buskers good. I think that the Dail is good too. The chowder in the Front Door is, unfortunately, not very good (unless they've improved it a lot recently).

Had the best Seafood Chowder to date in the Brasserie on Sunday. Was very tasty and full of fishy chunks. The only down side was the bread portion (a slice of mix seed brown bread and a sun dried tomato white bread) both a little stale. At €5.95 it's great value.

I had that recently too, and agree. Very nice chowder and great price.

Also, Wedn and Fri is chowder day at GMIT canteen :) its actually not too bad and you should get bread and tea for a fiver. They started making homemade cheese and onion bread too which is nice.

Last nomination has to be Donnellys of Barna.

Big Chowder fan here, love the stuff.

The best chowder i have had in Galway City is without doubt in Kettle of Fish it was absolutely delicious. Cooked fresh, big chunks of fish and 4 thick slices of browne bread. I highly recommend it and it's great value too!

Morans on the Weirs is very tasty but a bit too light for me.

I really like Paddy Burkes too, it's very rich though more like a hearty meal but lovely at this time of year.

Don't rate Donnellys at all and i think the one at the Galway shopping center is poor.

I'll second this, or Paddy Burkes in Clarenbridge has she same quality chowder.

A bit off the topic but where is the best place for a bowl of soup?

Had soup in a few different places around town and it can be well varied.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

No offence but let's stick with chowdery goodness in this thread. Start a soup thread if you like.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Please note that this thread is now 2 years old.
Since chowder isn't a common topic we'll roll with it this time but note that some places mentioned earlier may be closed or changed their menu/chefs.

haven't had it for a while but the Huntsman chowder was always fantastic.

Monks was once famous for chowder but I was very disappointed in a recent visit. It tasted nice but was much too creamy. Sickeningly so.
It is hard to find a nice chowder. People have different tastes too.
I like a chowder you can almost walk across with all the meat inside.

I totally agree, was totally surprised with how good it was there. Lots of mussels.
