The Evening Standard have listed their top 5 chippies. Haven't tried any of these places so can't vouch for them:

    1.Brady's http://bradysfish.co.uk/

    2. Poppies http://poppiesfishandchips.co.uk/

    3. Kerbisher and Malt http://www.kerbisher.co.uk/

    4. Olley's http://www.olleys.info/

    5. Geale's http://www.geales.com/

Poppies looks most interesting to me as it has a 50s diner look, and I'm a sucker for that!

Have had Poppies before and it is one of my favourite places to grab lunch if I'm in the mood for deep fried goodness...

Eaten in Olley's (and had takeaway) a few times when I lived at that end of Brixton. I really like it but haven't been up in at least a year and a half (maybe 2 and a half?) as its a bit out of the way.

Right, I've been reading about MeatLiquor in the Standard and the piece has thrown up some more suggestions:

    Polpo http://polpo.co.uk/

    Honest Burger http://www.honestburgers.co.uk/

    10 Greek Street http://www.10greekstreet.com/

(It also mentioned Burger & Lobster, which OhThePenguin already noted earlier ;))

I can't understand why burger places get any hype tbh, I find it hard to get excited over a burger you can make at home - especially if they expect you to queue for them like in Meat Liquor!

Anyway I was in labodeganegra.com last night in Soho, really good, unusual location too :D

I didn't want to say anything for fear of being hunted down and pâtéd.

To continue the burger obsession (sorry!), I was reading the Evening Standard Food Magazine and it mentions Lucky Chip, might be worth investigating.

This is the last burger place i'll mention - this blog seems to cover them all!

There's a vicious rumour circulating London regarding several eateries serving food in non-burger form...

Visited Tramshed at the weekend, it does chicken or steak and that's it. But with so little choice they do it very well.

The steaks can be bought up to a kg!

We finished up in Gordon's which everyone should know of by now!

    Sorry - didn't mean to be smart-arse.

I spend most of my time in pubs rather than restaurants, but some of the best I've found for food are (in approximate order of preference):

    The Fox & Hounds - www.thefoxandhoundspub.co.uk

Probably the best food I've had in a pub anywhere and probably the best pub in London for striking an absolutely perfect balance between great food and friendly, laid-back boozer.

    The Churchill Arms - churchillarmskensington.co.uk

This place is worth visiting just to see the interior - a myriad of butterflies, chamber pots and war memorabilia hangs from the ceilings. Great local pub with a terrific, excellent value Thai kitchen.

    Battersea Mess & Music Hall - www.batterseamessandmusichall.com

One of the best beer selections you'll find in London, but also great food too.

    The Canton Arms - www.cantonarms.com

This place is, unfortunately, leaning ever so slightly towards pretentious, but the food is excellent never-the-less.

I got a chance to try out the Goodlife Diner in Covent Garden today and was very impressed -the food on offer is somewhere between a conventional (but very good) burger place and the magnificence known as Bodeans. The beer list is great for a restaurant (to be honest I'd consider it pretty damn good for a pub too) and the food on offer is excellent. I'm a sucker for pulled pork, and have today been ruined for about 99% of hotdogs available worldwide after trying their beef hotdog with pulled pork & mustard topping.

(Those interested in burgers might also be interested in Thoroughly Nice Burgers, a blog a friend of mine started recently - some decent suggestions so far).

It's worth noting that the Chuchill Arms is a hybrid British-Irish-Thai pub and while that should strike fear into your heart it is one of the best mid sized boozers in London.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of trying Ethoipian food at The Queen of Sheba in Kentish Town.

    http://flavors.me/queenofshebalondon

The food is dished out on a large tray and you scoop it up with pieces of pancakey bread. Everything was delicious and it's a very interactive experience when you're eating as a group.

The restaurant itself is small and cosy and the waitresses were lovely and helpful.

    Thumbs up!

I'd also recommend the Vietnamese restaurant in West Hampstead:

    http://www.ladudu.com/

I've eaten there a couple of times and haven't been disappointed. Fresh tasty vietnamese food.

I convinced them to make me a baileys coffee with vietnamese coffee and they were so intrigued by my suggestion it might even make its way onto the menu! :D

I know it's a chain but I think any of the Aberdeen Angus Steak house's are excellent!;)

    Surely this lad's joking :)

For anyone who likes a good curry they should check out The Maharani in Soho. Fantastic food at very reasonable prices and huge portions. Everyone who I have taken has loved the place.

Was in London at the weekend and checked this thread before we went. Really enjoyed the burgers in the Goodlife Diner in Soho, but next time in London my first stop will be Bodeans for more of their ribs. Probably the best ribs I've had outside of the States.

Had a Gordon Ramsey voucher to use up so went to the Grill Bar at the Savoy (worth a visit just to see the bar / foyer). The food was ok, to be honest there just wasn't enough of it, a £26 main course had 3 scallops ( making them more expensive than silver by my reckoning), I left hungry and significantly poorer. Although a pleasant evening, great service, great wine list, lovely decor, interesting clientele, I won't be going back in a hurry for the food.

Was back at the Rivington Bar & Grill last Friday, still good food, great service and always a few unusual dishes to keep you interested. Had a 50% off offer on Top Table which made it fairly reasonable.

Must go to the Tramshed next.

I'm resurrecting this thread to feature a restaurant that looks intriguing:

Flat Iron in Soho. No reservations (I know) but apparently the cocktail bar on offer makes it worth the wait for the food.

What is it then? They don't actually put roast beef in a Sundae do they?

From the Menu (FYI: anyone who thinks that .jpg is the right format for a web-based menu is a prat. That is all.), the Roast Beef Sundae contains "garlic mash topped with roast beef, gravy, crispy onions and horseradish cream, with a cherry tomato on top."

Don't ask me why you'd do this to yourself, they don't explain that on the menu
