Belgos just off Covent Gardens is awesome.

If you visit Belgium or France as much as I do you will love this place! Great food I had the snob mussels pot with frites with the Chicken liver pate to start and some lovely belgian beers that went down a treat.

Book early tho! there is often a queue at the door.

I agree with Belgos, I have been in the one in Covent Garden, but there is one very near my home in Chalk Farm which is just opposites the Round House, I have had a pre Christmas lunch there and had a wonderful meal which was reasonably priced, which ended in them supplying free drinks for all in our party.

Yes, ASCII art menus are the way to go!

Don't ask me why you'd do this to yourself, they don't explain that on the menu

I would do this to myself :)

Yes, been to Lowlander three (four?) times now. I've had some very good meals there. It's annoying though that they don't have all the beers they list in their menu!

Staying at the Premier Inn Blackfriers for a few days with the misses next week, will be doing the sights, but any recommendations for restaurants or nice bars within walking distance.

Was told Scalini's in kensington was good but reviews seem to say it's overpriced and old school?

Hey, meeting an old friend in Soho/Covent Garden on Friday night for food. She's a veggie as is her boyfriend, so would like to find somewhere veggie-friendly in the area. Any recommendations? :)

Wahaca should see you right, though they don't take bookings. Alternatively, Andalucia Tapas has been on my list of places to check out for a while and should have a few interesting veggie-friendly choices.

Was in Ottolenghi on Upper Street tonight. Great food and excellent service. Very enjoyable. Just make sure to book well in advance!

I mentioned an Indian earlier in this thread called The Maherani. It's in Soho and the Food is fantastic, generous portions and very reasonably priced. Everyone I have taken has gone back mutliple times. Indians are usually very good in terms of veggie options too although I didnt take any particular notice of their veggie menu.

I am never going to eat out again after listening to the radio this morning, FSA person phoned into the station and said that when he was making an official inspection to India restaurant and they open a fridge and found 2 dead dogs in there, when the owner ask what they were there, the owner said that it was for family consumption, which he did not believe, but could not do anything about it.

Also ambulance person phoned to the station and said when he took a patient to hospital as she was chocking, the patient was was asked what she was eating and she said chicken, but when the hospital took out the bone from her it was a rat bone.. that's finished it for me eating out....

Mildreds I'm not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination but can heartily recommend the food

Some good cheap eats recommendations from Time Out. I like the sound of Zedel in particular: http://www.timeout.com/london/food-and-drink/cheap-dinners-in-london

My flatmates have been discussing good restaurants in Shoreditch so I'm just jotting a couple down here for future reference:

The Drunken Monkey can get a bit noisy but the food is supposed to be fab.

Drunken Monkey is fun but I wouldn't regard it as gastronomic in Chonese terms; perhaps not even in terms of pub food.

Zedel is very keenly priced for a beautiful room and good brasserie food. Anyone who was at the Atlantic Bar when it was THE place to be in London will be surprised how much of the decor remains although the entrance has completely shifted. The O'Callaghans Oirish pub that was upstairs has gone as well.

My boss recommends Cerviche for delicious Peruvian food:

I'm definitely trying this place soon :)

For a completely random experience, dans le noir.

What could be more unusual then being led by your blind waiter into a darkened room!

You have a choice of 4 options: surprise, vegetarian, fish or meat.

Flat Iron Steak in Soho, they only do one item on the menu and that's steak. Delicious and succulent steak. It's a new cut of steak and this steak only costs £10. They serve chips with the steak that's cooked in beef-dripping. It's unreal. Steak.

    Steak.

You can find this place in Soho on Beak Street. They also serve delicious craft ales.

I think people already mentioned Tayyabs in Whitechapel but I'll mention it again. Myself and the old doll rocked in on Friday before we went to the boxing in Bethnal Green and my God it was only glorious. Succulent and tender Lamb Chops for starters came out on a sizzling cast iron platter belching fumes of delicious spice all over the two of us, dripping in an understated-but-fantastic gingery marinade. This was then followed by a Karahi (Punjab curry served in a small wok) with possibly the most tender and delicous meat I've ever had mopped up with a soft and fluffy garlic and coriander nan.

You can bring your own booze, two servings of chops, two curries and two naans came to thirty odd pound.

Honestly, if you haven't been yet; get ye'reselves down post haste.

I looked into going one evening but there was a queue of about 50 people.
'Aint got time for that shit!'

Make a booking for a reasonably early time and you'll be grand. Seriously like, for what you're paying it'll be a great munch.

Didn't know they took bookings. Why not just book for a good time in that case? Are bookings done over the phone or in person, like a waiting list?

Is it all that much better than Lahore? (Not a massive fan of Lahore by the way)

Because the booking system is apparently haphazard and you might still have to queue for a small bit. I've never been to Lahore so I can't comment. You can phone in a booking and they're sound as a pound in there. It's an in-and-out sort of gaff which suits me down to the ground. The fact you can also arrive with a bag of cans is the job.

There's another gaff around the corner from it called the Needo Grill which is also the canine's genitals.

It's also worth mentioning Borough Market. Not a restaurant per se but full of a million and one stalls selling everything from pies, to curry, to whatever. You can also sample things like cheese and weird sh*t like partridge paté. It's well worth a visit on a sunny afternoon, there's a pub there with around 200 types of ales as well.

Yes, the Market Porter - great place.

    Haché in Camden and Chelsea.

Smashing gourmet burger type gaff that cooks the burger to your specification. Nothing beats a medium-rare succulent steak burger. They also have a million and one cheeses. I got smoked applewood and the slice was the size of a WagonWheel, accompanied by delicious caramelised onions and an avocado fan. Well worth a munch.

In Clapham too. Was there a couple of months back. Thought it was good but didnt blow me away. Think the 'Burger and Lobster' burger is better!

I haven't been there at all, was supposed to head into town to sample this infamous Meat Liquor gaff (or possibly Byron) but wound up in Camden hence the trip to Haché. It's a grand munch, not something I'd book months ahead but well worth a trip before the theatre or a night on the beer. Dare I say that there is only so much that can be done with a beef burger??
