After being stuck in two long traffic jams due to accidents on the n11 (nearly every second day at this stage) last I’ve decided to investigate an alternate way home from getting off the m50 early when i see a big tailback in the distance
Does anyone have any alternate routes they’d care to share?.....i’ve often thought about turning off at leopardstown but wouldn’t have a clue what way to go…

Anyone got any good routes back to greystones/bray?

through enniskerry from leopardstown, but generally if the n11 is backed up so will that road be.

There are a few depending how far along you want to go and the weather.

From tallaght to Bray you could head out the Military Road which runs up by Kippure and then you can drop down into Enniskerry and on to Bray and the N11, or continue to Newtown via the Sally Gap and Roundwood.

Back a few years when the M50 wasn't complete the popular alternative was to come over Lamb Doyles and then through Stepaside and Enniskerry. This route gives you a few choices as you can drop down to; the Silver Tasse, Shankill, old Connaught Avenue, or the Dargle Road. This route can be accessed by coming off at Firhouse or if the problems are further along come off at Dundrum.

In either case after Enniskerry it can be a little messy getting over to the Roundwood road and then down to Kilpedder or Newtown to rejoin the N11. It can be done but I suggest getting someone to show you or try to do it yourself at a weekend with a map or GPS.

When the issue is snow or ice though Tallaght to Kippure is usually a no no as is the backroad to Roundwood, unless you have a 4x4.

Carrickmines exit, up to Kiltiernan, Enniskerry, Past Powerscourt, out at Kilcroney or out at Avoca or Rocky Valley

You could also come off the M50 at Cherrywood (R118) and then rejoin the N11 before taking the Shankhill exit at the roundabout at the top and then come through Bray. It's not always quicker, but can be.

This morning was a real pain with the N11 blocked northbound and the R761 also blocked with a solid tailback to Killincarrig. Once there is an accident on the N11 in the mornings it causes total chaos on every road going towards Bray. No doubt the Gardai and the Fire Brigade were probably stuck out in the overtaking lane jamming up everyone and not allowing at least 1 lane to move.

thanks for the suggestions guys..... will have to try out one or two of them over the next while..... rubberneckers are the bain of my life.... any small thing out of the ordinary like a garda car pulled over giving a ticket causes some people to slow right down and causes tail backs.... idiots!

there was a guard and a fireman killed a couple of years ago by a driver trying to get passed the scene of an accident, because they hadn't properly parked blocking the traffic. It's not done to annoy commuters, it's to protect themselves.

There's a really long way round if the M50 is blocked.

    Come off at Ballyboden exit.

Head toward Ballyboden turning right onto Stocking Lane (R115 Military Rd) and keep going to you get to Laragh. Chuck a left and go straight coming out at Kilmac.

There is a right turn on way at Djouce Golf Club which will bring you out at Newtown.

It would be quicker to fly to Cape Town. :)

Before you try one of these lovely scenic routes check before you travel - go to http://www.tomtom.com/livetraffic

Pretty good site plus it's updated every few mins.

Be careful of the high routes - the sally gap can have snow when it's quite mild at lower levels. And also low cloud can make it a bit hairy going from Sally Gap to the top of Ballinastoe (the bit with the drop down to the lough isn't that pleasant when you can only see a few yards  )

So if they parked a short distance behind the stopped vehicles and left the hazard lights on in the squad car, would that not protect them? Seems OTT to park the squad car in the adjacent lane.

The safest way to do it is park in the "fend off" position. This blocks the path of oncoming traffic that may be a danger to any personnel working around the vehicles/patients at the scene of an accident. Priority is given to the safety of crew working. Consideration is given to traffic but if it endangers the scene no chances are taken and the road is blocked.
