No one in this country is ever tested on their motorway driving as its only recently we have built many of them, a test on licence renewal is needed to bring people up to scratch, fail this and remove that drivers right to drive on motorways. As for money the 65 million on speed cameras would have went a long way to covering it as would an increase in the fee to renew your licence.

No, being held up is not my issue, my issue is the inconsistent, ignorant and dangerous driving that takes place in front of me every time I drive the M50, even more concerning is these people aren't aware they are doing it.

Yes, not only do Gardai ignore it I've even seen Garda drive in such a manner.

I disagree in that I think most people don't know the stay left rule and actually think of the lanes as fast and slow lanes, why else would you constantly see people travelling at 80 - 90 km/h in the overtaking lane?

I agree that the adverts highlight them and that since they started airing there has been an improvement in driving in motorways but they aren't enough to bring the driving standards on are motorways up to scratch.

I agree with this but I think proper lane discipline would be included under driving safely for the road conditions.

Why would a test every ten years be excessive?

To be honest sir, I think both of us want the same thing; safer roads. It's just on some matters we might differ, but that's the great thing about boards; the exchange of views.

Speed camera's in fairness (love or hate them) might be considered cost neutral, our current driving test fee does not cover the cost of the actual test so any extra tests taken on would be an added drain on the public purse.

As for continued testing through out your driving life, well I have some worries about this; do we test all category of vehicles, will I have to re-test for my bike licence, if I was a truck or bus driver would I also retest on these as well as my car, I may be wrong but do bus drivers do some annual test. Maybe it's possible but would we re-test and then revert to type. Constant in your face re-re-re-education might be the answer.

As for enforcement, tomato tomato my experience is different to yours but according to the RSA statistics, 72 offences for 'breach of motorway outside lane rule' were recorded in Dublin county last year, 150 offences of 'failing to drive on the left hand side' (I don't know if thats related to our problem) were also recorded.

I'm at a loss as to how apart from what is currently been done we could spread the message but I reckon if any place could do it; this forum could. We could encourage insurance companies to offer greater discounts for advanced driver training, filling stations might be asked to offer free air time to the RSA on the TV systems some of them have.

One thing for sure, the answer does not lie in driver frustration; life is too short and I have enought to worry about already my mortgage, hair loss:(. Maybe we should also educate drivers in stress relief, because no matter what we do there will always be given the chance something that annoys us.

It doesn't make it right of course but the judge in the case mentioned here refers to the 'fast lane' of the motorway during his summation.

Undertaking in the "slow" lane ? Pure shock'in. :D
If everyone drove in the correct lane, it would not be possible to undertake!

Yep. Therefore, a free for all with overtaking in the left lane and p!ssing about/hogging the right lane(s) is definitely the answer.

It actually works a lot better than a car doing 95 in the driving lane on the M50 having to change lane 4 times to overtake an idiot in the middle lane sitting at 80 (there are a huge amount of these)

You are absolutely right in the same sense that if we all where nicer to each other there'd be no war.
100% correct, everyone knows it, it's the simplest thing in the world to do and it won't cost anyone a penny.
So it won't happen in a million years of Sundays.
Some people love aggro and will create it where they can (lane hoggers, slow drivers, arsehole parkers and so on) and will blame the entire world, God and Bob for it, but never themselves.
Otherwise they wouldn't do it. Why? Because deep down inside they enjoy it.
