Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi

Hope someone can help. I've just bought an old honda 50 out of a shed. The plate was on it but the numbers are gone. I've shied away from other classics because of this but this time I'm not prepared to let this one go without a fight. Its an old early 60's model and their too rare to let go now.

    Any info would be appreciated

    Thanks

What do you mean by 'the numbers are gone'?
Were the numbers plastic digits which fell off?
Can you make out the imprint of the numbers on the metal plate?

If so, its just a matter of applying for a replacement tax book.
Once its currently registered in your name, you just get the form at your local garda station, have it stamped there, and send it off to your local tax office with €12. You'll get the new tax book back in the post in a couple of weeks.

Is the Vin number still readable? You could get a new book based on that

    Hi Guys

    Thanks for the replies.

To clarify :The procedure for getting a new book for a vehicle of which you are not the present registered owner involves entering the registration number, engine and frame/chassis number on a form which you then need verified by a garage. All three must be present and verified and the vehicle must be roadworthy. Unfortunately the registration number is not legible in this case.

The idea of registering in the UK from an age cert and importing is a last resort but thanks for that it might be the only way. I was hoping there was a procedure here that mirrored the British system (everything else seems to.)

What's the procedure for getting a reg from a vin number, does anybody know? Or can it be done from chassis and engine number alone??

Anybody done this or know of someone who did?

Thanks again for all the help so far.

I'm open to correction, but on vehicles of that era, a frame/engine no search isn't sufficient - the reg is the starting point to start looking.........

Whilst this may have been in a shed for years, is there no possibility of discerning what the numbers (might) have been, with careful exam of the number plate (shadowing etc) ??

Failing that - do you know who owned it, the family - anything..... ? It is entirely possible as, when they were new, they were very proudly possessed by their owner's, and someone in the house would have taken a photo of it......I know my Dad did with his first Beetle, in 1963.......

Don't give up that easy ! Do a CSi (fada) on it ! :)

And, in the same vein....some of the older generations locally have great memories for stuff like that....'oh I remember the day Seanie brought home the new Honda....the whole village was out to see it....' etc. No, really.....you'd be surprised........

    Thanks Galwaytt

I think your probably right about the reg being the all important number. The front "razor blade" was removed at some stage and it's possible that it was replaced by stick on numbers on either side of the front mudguard. It's coming
out into the light of day on Saturday and I'll be very careful about cleaning until I see if its possible to glean any info from that.

I'm not going to give up. I've let myself be discouraged in similar circumstances and I'm not going to do it this time.

I love the lateral thinking by the way. Info like that would make the bike sooo much more interesting.

No prob - I 'rescued' a Honda 90 years ago for someone. Well, it had been parked for 15+ years, so naturally I pumped tyres, put in petrol and 3 kicks later............rode it home. (Well it IS a Honda !! ) :D 10yrs later - still unrestored iirc - it's still going.......

Anyhoo, there's no rear reg plate ? Anywhere ? Check on shelf's, on the wall, behind paint tins.......the usual place where people put small 'stuff' in a garage.........did it fall down behind a press, or, or........get the idea ?
