Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sherlock debates the Irish SOPA

As I said to Sherlock in an email, persisting with this nonsense will turn the young voters of Ireland against him and he will fatally damage his public career in the long term.

I think that we need the title of this thread to be changed, to say that Sherlock is any way capable of debating is an insult to debtors the world over. The man is a bumbling, incompetent fool who quite clearly doesn't have a clue what he's talking about or just what the legislation entails. His interviews on the radio have been embarrassing, he's repeatedly being shown up for not having a clue what he's talking about and his two "debates" in the dail should have came with a laugh track supplied.

There's only one way to show this clown the error of it's ways. Consistently report Irish websites for copyright infringement until most of the well known ones are forced offline or unable to function.

Go for an actual blackout of the Irish internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,906 ✭✭✭✭PhlegmyMoses

Why is this Sherlock's soapbox? I have to admit to knowing nothing about him until this came about. What is his interest in having this pushed through?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Block Facebook for 12hours. You will have him killed!

I haven't used my Facebook account in ages. So when that petition about acts came up I droped it in to Facebook. After 3 days only one fella checked it.. And he was from north!!! I bet they will pay attention when they won't be able to poke somebody while scratching balls or fanny...

    Hmmm... *cough*

Note To Sherlock and Irish Magistrates: That's a joke, ya pricks.

Ireland has been slow enough to catch up with the rest of the developed world as regards the industry, and just as it's picking up this spa is doing his best to hinder any progress at all.

That's like saying "We're going to give to Taoiseach the power to overule any decision made in the Dail but it's only for emergencies and he promises not to use it".

Is this guy for real, "Information Service Provider"? I'm assuming he meant Internet Service Provider, just goes to show how clued in these idiots are. Not to mention his own personal website infringed on Microsofts copyrights due to images it displayed (this has been silently rectified but still the "offence" was commited and archive.org will prove this).
I had to turn this off I got so angry, he keeps going on about how great it is having the likes of Google etc here, well look how many jobs that will be lost if these companies leave Ireland, and even if they don't it certainly wont be attractive to Ireland for other similar companies entering a country where internet censorship is in full swing.
Incompetence of the highest order, and ironically won't solve the piracy issue one bit.

I was particularly worried by number 9, 14, 17 and 18. Who in their right mind would continue to use password as their password. In fact all of them are god awful passwords.

Brad McGrath, "brid" and Fionnuala Quinlan should be whipped and denied access to any computers in the future.

And not ONE password following even generic password recommendations?

WHO ARE THESE FUCKING PEOPLE AND WHY ARE THEY WORKING FOR OUR GOVERNMENT??!!

Jesus, those are horrificly bad passwords. Anon might as well have just guessed them, probably would've saved them more time.

Still, not that it matters what kind of password they had, now.

    Irish Aid Agency apparently
Meanwhile, the Irish Aid Agency website was taken offline after suspicious activity was discovered.
The Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement about the Irish Aid Agency site saying: "we are aware of website user login information being posted online."
It continued. "the website server has been taken offline as a precautionary measure and the matter is being investigated by our IT specialists."
The statement said: "this is an external service and is separate to the internal Departmental servers; these have not been affected."
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0201/anonymous.html

Still under the umbrella of dept. of Foreign Affairs I suppose.

I agree that it's an extreme example but it could happen. The point is that these kind of examples have to be made in order to get the point heard. It's not about music or video piracy, it's about general copyright.

don't know if it's been posted yet, I'm in work so can't check, but this should contain the whitewash debate...

If we can cut/paste the relevant section to youtube, and share with theregister, slashdot, boingboing and ars technica, we can demonstrate the attitude of passing these IP laws in Ireland, and is may help people prepare in more democratic and fair countries.

    You can request it: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/maps/streetview/privacy.html

And they will oblige, but not for legal reasons.

The most ridiculous part of this is that it will only affect legitimate users. Piracy will not even skip a beat. It's hilarious how many ways you can get pirate material online without ever going near a website. Not to mention the old fashioned way, DVDs and thumb drives.

This legislation is a sham, like most of the things that our government do. Just another reason to add to the list in favour of emigration.

It's like the piracy warnings that you can't skip: you only see them if you buy the film...

Who is it being organised by? If it's anyone but the looney left/shinners, I'll most likely be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Spacedog

I feel you syco, but this goes past, left/right politics. there'll always be a few of us crusties showing up where corporations are bribing government. but, like with SOPA in the states, Republicans and Democrats both put their differences aside to fight it. It pains me to say it, but Republicans probably pushed more against SOPA as it was a Democrat proposal? or because it affects Rep. voters as much as it does Dems.

Watch the debate i linked above, you'll see A FG TD referring to you and me as keyboard warriors on this one. He'd like nothing more than for us to stay home and watch telly during the protest.

Is there a direct link to that? I tried to watch but I didn't know when to skip to the important part.

I don't know, I'm in work. I'll try to rip it later and post it to youtube and bit torrent legally (after all we did pay for it)

by the description, I'd say it's near the end of the stream, just keep shipping until you recognize Sherlock reading his 1 page statement in a repeating loop for an hour and 20 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Spacedog

grrrr.... youtube restrictions won't let me upload it (files too long)

    if you go to http://www.oireachtas.ie/viewdoc.asp?DocID=20208&&CatID=130

and navigate to 4:01 it starts there.
    it gets interesting around 5:13.

The guy who wanted this implamented eg "The head of EMI" is also chair man of IMRA (which is stragingly enough ament to look after the rights of an individual artist). But IMRA seems to believe that any artist signed to them (mostly up and coming acts eg you are automatically signed to them (no fee) it you our played on National radio twice, National TV once, they will be so good that they will collect your royalities, What IRMA started doing about 2 years ago was charge fan based Blogs of up and coming bands, they asked for €300 to promote your act or band, the blogs stopped, the up and coming bands made on average 0.25

What this act is asking for and it's what all the major label media companies, want is the distribution rights to our art, they way to break this, is to own our own art, the way to beat this is by having an opinion, to voice it and quote people "Always quote where you get your information from"

For a song, no your copy right laws and how to bend them, a record label owns the rights to record a song, they generally don't own the rights to the song, so if you do a cover ask for the rights off the artist, generally if they our happy with it they will hand it too free.:)

Last point goes with everything on line, pictures/videos/graphics/quotes most people want their art to be seen, heard, read their is no artist I know who dosn't want to share their art, most of it is free just now acknowledge the creator of the piece of work.

You may think now I'm infavour of this I'm not, cause it is actually against every artists wise, What will happen though, independent labels will appear, people will start buying from them, radio station will be unlistened and become the new tabloid Press. Things will change big time the "big media comanies" have just sound their death Knell ( eg they are hammering home the last nail in their coffin) they have already lost

Why cause we will do what they ask (smile sweetly) and still do promotion of arts underground.

Example of smiling sweetly I have a youtube channel that me and any other artists I video/record/edit actually we own the copyright. We all owe it, I manage it but we all own it, and the great thing about this channel is that I can go and see these guys life here in Ireland, in their local, playing their songs, whatever their genre. Here is two right now. (that we own the copyright too and to prove my point)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnkQ34mkFWk

    The robot song

    and the next genre

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUziGJ70AQc

In fairness let the big "Media Companies" try to shut us up, by trying to do it they have already given themselves the smoking gun, fingerprints apon it, owned by them. Most people just want to heard/seen/understood, that is where they failed The "media Companies" by trying for distribution rights the missed out on copyright law, both myself and the artist own the 100% rights to those links I posted, why cause we own the visual, they own the song, it's copyright working regardless of EMI, and the other companies :D
