Getting a green card for US Air force

Right, so I want to be a military pilot, and the RAF is out since I need to be living in the UK for 5 years but by the time I'm finished college and then after the 5 years I'd be over the limit. But the USAF age limit for pilots is 30, so that may be the only way of doing this.

I've been reading about the different ways of getting the green card, and most don't apply to me. The only one that might be relevant is the one about employment if you have certain degrees. When I'm finished in college I'll have a BA in mathematics.

Would this be of any use or will I just have to go and live in the US for 5 years?

    Thanks for any info!

You can't just go and live in the USA for 5 years, you need to have a greencard (or some sort of work visa) to do so. Joining the US military wil not get you a greencard, you must be a resident before joining. But if you do find a way to join up, being military will accelerate your path to citizenship.

basically what silja says is correct, you need a green card & be living in the US before you consider enlisting.

from speaking to a TI that I know in the USAF unless you are a citizen you can not become an officer, you'll only be able to hold an E rank, unless you become a US citizen which means living there for a number of years. I'm pretty certain only officers fly, the E ranks do not.

combat deployments would be open to E ranks if you enrolled in schools such as Pararescue (PJ) school :D or Combat Controll Technicians (CCT) school. these serve on the front lines, PJs also assist civilian rescue services such as coast guard should there be a need.

but there are restrictions on security clearences for non citizins so some PJ deployments may not be availible, such as those in Florida (Clark AFB i think) as PJs there assist NASA with recovery and search and rescue for the shuttle programs etc.
