Thanks Metrovick001 for sharing nice vid.

081 was on the last santa train of the day, seen running round its train at Pearse, Saturday 07 12 2013.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhn8882/11256974763/

Today's run around saw a peculiar set of movements. After the afternoon Santa Special, 461 and Cravens were routed into the northbound platform rather than the regular practice of working into the southbound.

Once here, 461 was released and made her way into Pearse Yard, leaving the Cravens awaiting a diesel engine to haul the late train. Aside from the sight of 400 bemused passengers who were not allowed onboard the final Santa Special until the train was cleaned up, there was also the unusual site of both north and southbound trains working wrong way into and out of Pearse for a while until the RPSI train set off.

In spite of the on the fly movements from CTC, delays to the regular services were non existent while the RPSI train got off smoothly if a little behind schedule.

Interesting goings on 084 just left her IWT train in the loop and pulled in to the siding at Sallins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 919 ✭✭✭n0brain3r

082 coupled to the IWT and is hauling the train to Ballina. 084 is still in the siding at Sallins she hasn't failed completely and is running but I'm guessing something else was wrong necessitating the loco swop.

First attached pic is 084 in the siding at Sallins. 082 is in the background coupling to the IWT train in the loop.

Can any tell me what the sign in the second pic is for? It's fixed to the railing at the end of the platform in Sallins.

    .
I was surprised it even reached Sallins, there was earlier reports of 0117084 slipping dreadfully in the Dip departing NW, slipping in notch8 puts a terrible strain on the poor traction motors, thanks for posting the photos, you have a ring side seat of events at Sallins.
    Kind Regards

Thanks and you're welcome hg. Any reason she was affected and 082 wasn't? It was definitely the most interesting day in Sallins for while certainly the most interesting since the tamper broke down a few months back.

I've never seen anything use the siding in Sallins before so that was a first. The buffer stop in it certainly looks old and the track rusty and over grown.

It was the climb out of Northwall that 084 struggled on. 071s are not great in poor rail conditions in getting the power down to the rails. A pair of 141s would possibly have performed better in such conditions and at times they used to. The driver may have over stressed 084 and possibly damaged a traction motor.

This is where 201s are better on the heavier liners, they have engine management and wheel slip creep control systems. Plus a 201 would have been able to accelerate quicker out of the yard and climb out easier. 201s have been found to be easier on the fuel and more economical than an 071 on heavy liners.

There was even a time when an 071 on a Sligo train stalled in the climb out of Mullingar in poor rail conditions. It was hauling 7 Mk2s but I believe the train had to reverse back into the station.

Thanks for all the info guys.

The 071's are capable of multiple running right? Its just never been done. Anyone know the weight of the average loaded Tara mines train vs the IWT liners? 221 is sitting in the loop today on a Ballina bound IWT (She may have hauled yesterdays DP bound IWT too saw the loco but didn't catch the no)

Its very rare seening that siding used, the last time I saw it used was in April 2000 when locomotive 192 went into the siding to remove a grain wagon that had been abandoned in the up back siding for years. Folklore has it that the grain wagon was laden with grain when it was abandoned due to a hot axle about 6years before. When the wagon was finally removed on Saturday 29th April 2000 it was discovered that it was empty, stripped bare and eaten by pigeons, crows and jackdaws, the entire grain cargo had been stolen by birds, (our feathered friends) I think it was a tall tale, still it was a good story at the time.;)

071s can work in multiple but is forbidden under IE rules. Up in the North it's different. 071 and 111 worked in multiple for a railtour as did 111 and 113 for the Hunslet farewell tour. Same story for the 201s, 208 and 209 did run in multiple in the North on a tour while they were still in NIR blue and damaged the couplings on a Cravens rake in the process, 6,000hp up front. That will never happen again.

The IWT liners are heavier than the taras especially when there are alot of tankers on it. The Norfolks were the heaviest liners at around 750 odd tons, I have heard of them being even 800+ the odd time.
