My First Build, will this work, what could I change?

04-02-2012 4:41pmI want to build a new system, mostly for watching films, playing the odd game, photoshop, internet and college work. I've made a list on dabs and posted links here to what I have picked out and was wondering is everything compatible with one another. I want to put my 3 external harddrives into it which is no problem, the harddrive I have on the list is for backup and films etc. as I need the space and I have a 1TB 7200rpm that I will use as my main harddrive. I was also wondering if anyone knew any components that I could maybe change in order to keep costs down, I'm putting in 8Gb of RAM as thats one thing what I definitely want in the system. I have a couple of DVD writers so I don't need a new one. Also do I need that size PSU? I have a copy of windows 7 and ubuntu that I will be installing on it so I don't need to buy an operating system. I have a good keyboard and mouse and will be hooking it up to a 1920x1080 display.

Kept as many of the components the same as I could. Changed to an Intel build though, as you get more performance for the money, and you get far, far better upgrade options down the line.
I switched out the PSU, because the one you had most-likely would have exploded on you. Never, ever buy a PSU that looks to be offering high wattage for a lot less than everything else - there's a reason it's cheap.
Have you used Hardwareversand.de before? Odds are you can get everything a bit cheaper from there.0 -
Don't get bulldozer, its a fail. That Ram is overpriced and has huge heatspreaders, that PSU just isn't safe, it will blow up your computer. i've changed a few things around, giving you a much better CPU with a better upgrade path, a faster hard drive, you just don't boot from a green. The Asgard is also in stock there for the same price, but I prefer the look of the merc. Oh, and the graphics card is a good bit better.

I looked at Hardwareversand.de but I didn't see anywhere to pay by creditcard or paypal, are they a reliable company & how do they accept payment?
Serephucus Would that i3 be better than an this AMD Phenom http://www.dabs.ie/products/amd-phenom-ii-x4-960t-3-0ghz-8mb-95w-black-edition-7SK9.html?refs=50521&src=3? Would I be better off spending a bit more and getting an i5?
Eboggles, if I have 4 hard drives in the pc would that PSU be powerful enough?
I already have a 7200rpm harddrive for booting that I only got last summer, I was getting the green one for extra storage for films, music etc. and I don't need a dvd burner as I have one thats less than 12 months old.
Thanks for the help.0 -
HWVS take payment through back transfer. You can use PayPal, but they charge an extra 3% for that.
Yup, it would be a little more powerful (the i3) than the Phenom II. You could get the i5, but for a browsing/basic work machine, you probably don't need it. (If you can get it though, I would. Always good to have more power)
Either PSU will do fine with however many hard drives you have, though you might need Molex-SATA adapters for a couple of them, depending on the number of SATA connectors the PSU has.0 -
Thanks for the advise lads. I've decided to go with an i5 and a full ATX motherboard rather than an mATX. I have harddrive to do me until they start fall in price again and I've decided to put a SATA PCI card in rather than go with molex-sata cables for any extra harddrives.
Sata PCI Card (or something similar to this): http://www.dabs.ie/products/startech-com-4-port-pci-sata-raid-0-1-card-3ZRJ.html?q=sata%20port&src=16
Will this card require me to have a bigger PSU as it's the one thing I'm worrying about?
I was also going to maybe put a tv card in to allow me to receive Saorview and use the pc as a DVR, does anyone have any experience with these or would I be better off just getting am external usb one for cheap on ebay?
Looking at the prices between hardwareversand, pixmania, komplett and dabs, dabs seemed the best for prices at the moment when shipping etc is taken into account, so I am going to buy from them.

€10 cheaper from HWVS (just for reference)
Item|Price
Total build cost: €449.05 + €30 shipping
8GB-Kit GeIL Value Plus PC3-8500U CL7|€38.54
Corsair Builder Series CX430 V2, 430 Watt|€38.10
Xigmatek Asgard III Midi Tower - black, ohne Netzteil|€33.55
ASUS PCE-N10|€19.35
Intel Core i5-2400 Box, LGA1155|€168.49
ASRock H61DE/S3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€61.19
HIS HD 6770 GDDR5 1024MB DP/2xDVI/HDMI|€89.83
Any reason you went with a 2400S? It's more expensive, and slower than the regular 2400, and the only advantage is a lower TDP, which isn't really an issue anyway seeing how energy-efficient SB processors are.
I'd swap the Gigabyte board for an ASRock or MSI something (like above) as Gigabyte 1155 boards aren't great (booting issues, mostly), and possibly consider upgrading the PSU to something a bit more future-proof (something with a stronger 12V rail to handle GPU upgrades, perhaps).0 -
Here's a slightly better balanced build if you want to game at 1080p:
Item|Price
Total build cost: €509.31 + €30 shipping
Intel Core i5-2400 Box, LGA1155|€168.49
ASRock H61DE/S3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€61.19
8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9|€33.65
HIS HD 6870 Fan GDDR5 1024MB HDMI/DP/2xDVI|€144.51
Xigmatek Asgard II Midi Tower - black/black, ohne Netzteil|€31.61
Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 550W|€52.63
LogiLink Wireless LAN 300 Mbps PCI Karte 802.11n 2T2R|€17.23
I upped the GPU to a 6870 as the 6770 isn't great for gaming at 1080p. It still keeps it within budget.
Also that PCI SATA card just allows you to connect more hard drives to the motherboard, you still need to power them so it won't help with the molex->SATA issue. The PSU I picked out has 6 SATA connectors which should do you fine though.0 -

I don't mind the PSU as long as it powers the system for the time being, if I do decide to upgrade the GPU I can sell it and buy a higher wattage one. At the moment I'm just concerned with building a somewhat respectable system for as close to €500 as possible. With regards to the processor I was trying to buy all the parts from the same site and dabs only have the 2400S and not the regular 2400. They have the 2300 alright: Intel Core i5-2300 2.80GHz LGA1155 6MB, would this be a better processor? I know a few people with Gigabyte boards and they seemed happy with them, I would have no problem myself tinkering until it worked properly if its only a minor problem with booting. Here's a slightly better balanced build if you want to game at 1080p:

One other thing I'm wondering (although its probably unlikely) is there any chance the price of any of these components will fall dramatically in the next 5 to 10 days?0 -
So I've ordered the spec that deconduo recommended from hardwareversand but when I went to transfer funds from my account online I wasn't set up to transfer money from my account, now I have to wait for a letter from my bank with a code so I can transfer the money. How long do I have to transfer the money before my order is cancelled as Bank of Ireland aren't the fastest at getting letters out to customers. If its a week or so I'll be ok, but if it's 24 or 48 hours I may have to do it all over again.
When I have it built I'll post with pictures to let ye know how I got on. Is there anything you can recommend doing when I get the delivery in case anything is faulty or damaged? I'll probably photograph everything as I open it just to keep a record of anything that may be wrong, but any other ideas would be appreciated.0
