Lvl 28 now as a warrior on a PvP server and I must say this game is awesome so far. Lots of variety in how people can play a character just in terms of how they set up combo skills and glyphs. Mobs are fantastic and great fun to fight and when you get a similar level pvp fight they can last ages and are great fun. Cant believe this game nearly went under the radar for me. Best fun Ive had in an mmo since I can remember. Lets hope it continues in this vein.

Also the world is just awesome in terms of size, scope and variety.

    Gamespy review up.
    http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/tera-the-exiled-realm-of-arborea/1224574p1.html

I tend to agree with this review especially this paragraph.

But by the time I'd hit the mid 30s, I found it harder and harder to log in despite my initial passion for the combat. At that point, I'd more or less acquired every important ability I'd acquire on the way to the level cap of 60, and the repetition of the quests and grouping for more BAMs grew more tedious than I would have imagined. Worse yet, I'd already learned all the best tactics for each situation, and the resulting repetition robbed even the excellent combat of some of its appeal. Had I written my review before that time, I think I would have said that I was in love with TERA. Today, I still enjoy logging in, but it's clear that its hold on me is slipping fast.

For me the combat is just fantastic and the best ive ever played in an mmo.
The game looks great, the sheer scale of the world, cities etc is mind boggling but like the above paragraph im finding it harder and harder to log in.
Im lvl 34 and the grind has well and truely kicked in, when i say grind it feels like a grind as opposed to a massive amount of xp needed per level in the traditional sense of a grind..
The quests at 34 are almost identical to the quests at lvl 5, kill x wild boars, pick y amount of flowers and so on.
Why makes such a fantastic looking game with a huge and interesting world and have such fantastic combat if your just gonna churn out the same old quests time after time?

I read that earlier, and am now debating whether or not to get it on Friday. As much as i did enjoy the combat, and looked forward to fighting the BAM's, i'm just not sure i can handle any sort of grind these days.

It depends on your playstyle and preference I think. I'm not and never have been PvE focused. Quests have always been just a means to and end and even on SWTOR I Just skipped through them. I try not to quest or grind for 2 many hours in a week or a day. Do what I need to do.. Get a few levels and then find some PvP either through the outlaw capability or through guild wars.

I can understand if you are quest and PvE focused then it might get a little boring but I got bored in any mmo from PvE no matter the quality of the quests.

mystic is 45 now aint really found the grind yet, i hear 54-58 is very sluggish. But for me its all about the bam quests and instances, i do each instance about 5/6 times gives massive xp and good craic. And mystic is prob the slowest class in game for solo lvling but still enjoying it, its like every new mmo though once the new car smell wears off you find out how deep and addicting the game is, for some they might just stop others keep going like meself.
Also lvling a lancer with a mate on his beserker, he only plays couple hours a day due to rl stuff but its really fun duo lvling and we tend to duo every bam is really fun, its not fast lvling due to lack of time but like 35 now after only a few days just cause so bloody fast killing mobs :P

I find lvling with him on lancer, then going afk for a while coming back doing mystic for a bit at my own pace and throwing in some instances inbetween is really keeping the game fun and exciting all the time :)

I still dont know how long ill stick around for endgame, only time will tells.

Also i think diablo3 sitting there waiting for you is prob putting you off logging in aswell dcully :P

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,716 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Well i do admit Diablo 3 is just so good and tempting when i sit down to game.
I got my tank to 20 but its so slow to solo with, then again theres instant dungeon pops.
Maybe a break from my usual healer/tank routine might help.
Im thinking i might roll a sorcerer and lvl to 20 or so to see what i think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 263 ✭✭ShaneScouse

Aye if the game is waining for you then you cant force yourself to like it :(

sorcerer is good but very basic, prob one of the easier classes to play as its literally just a glass cannon, try slayer or zerk if you aint maybe?

I bought diablo3 yesterday myself, got a witchyoke to like lvl 15, but not sure if theres something wrong with me but i just cant put tera down lol, id much rather play it. Feels like ur characters are better for the work u put into em as they can enjoy a full mmo world where as in diablo its just same area rinse and repeat, but it is a fun game I can see why there is so much hype.

aye u really need to get to about lvl 25 and do the bam quests and the instnace like ive said 10 times, I know it sounds dikish but you havnt actually tried or played the game till u get to mid 20s, tera does a dreadfull job at impressing itself on you.

haha aye servers were bit wonky today, and d3 has been offline more then any recent mmo launch i can think of, its a fecking disgrace tbh

Lads, I'm wondering could anyone sort me out with a friend code or whatever they're called? I'm hesitant to put any money down without trying first as I've been badly burned by SWTOR. PM me if so, I think it requires someone give you their email, but I'm not 100% on the specifics.

Started a Slayer recently having previously not really enjoying my priest, lancer, sorcerer.
It just feels and plays right with the combat in this game.
Whether or not i stay subbed is another thing.

Not a fan of this game!

I am playing as an archer and if I want to get into a party to do some instances I will have to reroll. This is due to archers being so underpowered making party leaders replace you with a more desirable class. I can shot normal arrows, a powerful piercing arrow, a poison arrow or a volley of arrows... There doesn't seem to be anything interesting done to the standard archer template to make the combat mechanics of Tera shine, Aiming my shots is boring and does not work very well(Invisible walls blocking arrows, Hitting mobs even thought they have moved, Missing mobs even thought it was a clear hit etc) it seems to be a broken system. However my biggest problem with the archer is the range of my shots, I can't hit anything outside of 19 or so metres which is about 3-4 seconds worth of time before an enemy reaches me. Killing BAMs results in a kitefest for 20 minutes as I slowly chip away at their health while attempting to not go out of range or get killed.

The items in Tera are boring, I don't think my armour/weapon models have changed at all since I started. I enjoy collecting armour and weapons based on their looks but judging from Tera so far, There only seems to be a few different models of armour and weapons for each race.

The world is nice but empty of any immersion, Go to hub A get quests, complete quests, Go to Hub B etc... The quest dialogue is terrible and the voice acting is worse.

The combat system is a step in the right direction for MMO's but Tera fails to use its potential, The standard MMO quest template does not work well with the combat mechanics. They take an old and boring system(Kill quests) and then make an interesting combat system and the result is a mediocre experience. The joy from killing creatures is interrupted every few minutes by having to run across the map to hand in/get more quests.

Items lack personality, Or so it seems as the only items that anyone is getting to +9 is "Rebirth ... ", Maybe I am wrong but it seems that there is only a few items to obtain at endgame that are viable which is a major let down. I was hoping there would at the very least be be a decent amount of items to obtain in the already lackluster end game.

Oh, And there also doesn't seem to be anyone playing it anymore, Most servers are on Medium low now.

I would give it a 5/10. It does some interesting things but it just seems like an unfinished game. There is very little to do in the world other than kill things which gets boring fast.

There's a 7 day trial now for anyone who's interested.

Great combat ,fantastic graphics but mind numbing quests, cant believe they could shoot themselves in the foot like this.

what class ya rolling, I found 1-40 very fast lvling on any class even mystic. 40-50 is bit of a slog if solo and 50-60 is very big slog if solo.

Try duo for 40-60 if at all possible makes thing sooo much easier.

So anyone still playing Tera? I stopped playing due to holidays and work commitments but was really enjoying it prior to that. Was thinking of resubbing and just wanted to know peoples opionions and if the game has evolved at all? What is the player population like?

thats a pity! So its struggling then? Any new content patches? Do you see a future for the game.

It suffered from its poor quest lines but apart from that was a very solid game imo. Quest lines are an easy thing to fix post launch with new content and amendments to current quests.

The game is suffering from multiple angles.

Overall the game wasn't very good, The combat was decent however classes lacked any real depth and all felt the same. As I said in a previous post, No matter how good the combat system was, Having to run back and forth across zones to pick up and hand in kill quests destroyed any sense of immersion the game provided. A terrible quest system coupled with even worse voice acting/dialog set in a bland world destroyed any hope for a successful EU release.

Worse than all of this was the character models and their armour(Or lack of). The only way to describe it would be a perverted 12 year old's fantasy. This was something I thought could be ignored when I bought the game but when EVERYONE is running around as a female with next to no "armour" on in a MMO where social interaction is required then any chance of avoidance is impossible.

Then we the development releases, It first releases in KTera, Then in ATera and finally in ETera with each release having content removed so by the time it finally reached ETera we would have waited months and have a vastly inferior experience.

Finally there is the fact the worlds were always crashing(When I played a few weeks back). These worlds were on low population yet would crash once or twice per day for hours at a time.

Anyone thinking of resubbing/buying I would suggest avoid this game. Guild Wars 2 is out in a few weeks and is in a different league to Tera.

Its struggling in the sense its not gaining subs, theres a big patch out soon for it which does look good, and end game is very fun the instances are tricky but rewarding, not to shun what the lad above me said but its clear he never even got to endgame. but ye the pop has gone done an awfull lot and i cant see it going up. and the server and crash probs were during that enchant bug time, of about 10days and vexing but not a big deal and never had a crash before or since and you got free days for it.

but ye with gw2 on the horizon its hard to reccomend tera, let alone any mmo

Is that patch the one that has been live in ATera for months now? Don't you see a problem when content that is already developed and translated is then delayed for months for no reason over than to dumb it down and censor it(Blood is removed from ETera because us Europeans are weak minded or something).

I actually started playing after the enchant bug so was not given any extra gametime when the servers went down for hours without any communication from Frogster.

True I have never gotten to endgame but you can't deny that there is a severe lack of item progression and limited item models.

oh i agree with ya for most part, but alot still enjoy it and the endgame is good craic, so its not all doom and gloom, ive seen alot worse mmos in last few years swtor comes to mind, but i do worry for it esp with gw2 coming

    ...bump!

Tera going Free to Play February 2013!
Our philosophy is to add to what we already offer instead of restricting existing content. We've added an in-game shop where players can choose to buy costumes, mounts, and consumables, but the core of the game will be 100% free.

Only a matter of time, for this and pretty much any MMO on the market. We'll see how 'free' it actually is. Too many games have such terrible models (The Old Republic and Aion (EU) come to mind).

Ill definitely play Tera where it goes F2P, the best MMO of the last 12 months imo.
Doesnt look too restricting either especially if you bought the game before.

Combat and BAM soloing made it a more enjoyable experience than guild wars 2 for me. Its a shame the population is so low and the storyline and questing so bad.

Hopefully this will help with buffing the player base.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭Big Knox

Going to get into this when it goes F2P. Does anyone know will it be completely F2P or is it just going no sub, where you will have to buy the game first? If so I might as well pick it up now and get the account benefits now as the 30 day sub will take me into F2P next month!

Also has anyone played a Lancer? I really like the idea behind them, looks different to anything I've played in an MMO before but I have a feeling they could be somewhat boring compared to the other melee classes? Also how do the ranged classes like Priest fare? Would you be missing out on the melee goodness or are they fun also?

Lancer is enjoyable for instances etc but very slow to level.
I played one to mid 30s and a healer ,could be priest or cleric or something, the healing is cool, healing circles on ground etc.

As a lancer you are locked into tanking forever, so thats somewhat limiting, apart from that grinding is a lot slower but safer, you can still solo BAMs and stuff like that, with a warrior you can at least swap between light tanking and heavy dps.

The ranged dps classes have their own tricks to keep things interesting, you still have to perform all the jumps and maneuvering to stay out of range and perform damage so i dont think you are missing anything really.

I played Slayer, archer, warrior and lancer and found them all a lot of fun. Berserker gets fewer skills than other classes and is generally a lot slower in dealing and avoid damage which i wasn't a fan of.

Ah come on now. The combat is better, no doubt. But that's about it. It's a great looking game, with an excellent combat system, that is majorly let down by it's bland questing system. Plus, as good as it looks, i'd have to turn the game off as soon as anyone walks into the room. If someone saw the Elin characters running around in that armour...there'd be some questiongs asked :o

And i know you said imo, but still :P

Cheers for the replies. Think I'll go with Lancer and see how I get on, will be levelling with 2 friends most of the time so I'm not worried about the low damage side of things. Are PvP servers as annoying as I've been hearing?

Also what's end game like? Is there much content? I was a big fan of GW2 until end game (like everyone else) and pretty much immediately quit at max. Is there enough content to keep things interesting?

It has way better endgame from wehat i hear, then again that wouldnt be hard , thats all that matters to me with an MMO tbh :)

@ Big Knox , endgame is a lot more and better than GW2 from what i hear [have not maxed a char myself so cant comment] but still someway short of WOW and Rift in terms of endgame content pve.

In my extremely tired state friday night I managed to download the US client by mistake. I wouldn't mind but the download speeds aren't great and it took like 4 hours even on 50meg and then had to go and download the EU client last night. :o

Won't get to play now until tomorrow evening but looking forward to it. The few minutes I managed to run around on US felt good and I think I'll really enjoy the combat. I'm slightly worried about the grind, I'm going to take the chance on Lancer but it will prob make the grind even worse with the terrible DPS output.

I would advise you to try the US version first and see if your ping is decent.

It is a much better supported version and will most likely have a much bigger population once the F2P update hits.

Balls I've uninstalled the US client. Have some friends starting as well and they're on EU so will have to stick with it. Hopefully going F2P brings in new life to the game.

So, tera will definitely go F2P in February as per their announcement so maybe wait if you want to give it a try as you will have full access to the whole game.

I've been playing the game from July till November, basically every day. I think the game has a lot of unused potential but i doubt they'll use it. Don't get me wrong, I like the game and while I think the females could do without the heels and with a bit more clothing, I loved playing it for the time I did. I quit recently because I simply get bored. 4 Months and 3 characters on end game lvl, that is with me having a full-time job and not staying up until the wee hours of the night. The end game gets really boring after a while as all you can do is either grind money or lag yourself out in nexus (a mass raid-like event that by now is taking place several times a day) and a handful of dungeons. End game content is definitely missing.

I saw that someone mentioned the clothes of the Elin. Personally I find the Castanics way worse. Elin do NOT look like little kids...if a child of mine had child-bearing hips like this, i would be worried! Never have a look at the original Korean armours btw, they have even less cloth :)

So got to play 2 or 3 hours or so last night and got to level 10 on a Lancer. Really liking the combat so far even with a limited number of skills!

Looking forward to doing some dungeons as I think the tanking mechanic is great with real time blocking for you and your party. Will probably take me a long time to max but hopefully I'll stick with it.

Someone dev really needs to get the finger out and make an MMO with Teras combat, GW2's levelling system and PvP and WoW's endgame content!! :pac:

You'll get quite a number of skills as you level up, so don't worry about that ;).

The first instance that you'll have is around level 20 so not too far to go. Until around level 55 you#ll level fast enough as especially main quests (the red ones) will give you nice exp.
