Sure that could be from anyone. Are people that bloody paranoid?! Some junkie probably stole the laptops to give to his kids for Christmas.

If I type my phone number into Google I get pages upon pages of computer generated phone numbers which scammers send mass texts to. I often get random texts and calls from people with the wrong number or trying to tell me that my computer has a virus. It does not mean that the person has all my details, they just picked out a random number from a list.

    Hi Kensington
First and foremost we have to apologise to any impacted customers. To answers your own and other posts on this thread I have the following information
    · The company’s policy requires all laptops to be encrypted. However, while these laptops were password protected, they were not encrypted. The reason for this is under a separate investigation. An ongoing investigations taskforce led by a number of the Senior Management Team and our IT Department is in place to ensure that all laptops are fully encrypted and all the issues raised by this incident are addressed.
    · A third party validation exercise began on 22th February by a leading industry specialist in data analysis
    · It was found that data stored locally on the laptop was processed accordingly, but was not destroyed or removed from the laptop. As the laptop was not encrypted, this meant potential exposure.
    · We have conducted an audit to ensure all laptops are now fully encrypted – in line with the company policy and to find out how this breach happened and how it can be avoided in the future.
    ·
For close to 90% (86%) of those people impacted, the data at risk is name, address, contact telephone number and possibly an eircom account number
    · We do have access to all impacted information including copies of the documents that were stolen.
    · A dedicated team of 20 people are also being given access to a Database that shows what information we held for each of the customers/ non customers impacted. This team will be available on FreePhone 1800444085.
    · If you PM me the reference number of the letter this will identify which type of letter you have been sent. The letters are referenced 0001 to 0009. If you include telephone and pin number I should be able to answer most of your questions concerning your particular account
As I have stated if you do wish to have further details regarding your own particular case please PM me your details or call the support number above. We will do all we can you advise and help.

    Tony

I was really hoping that someone would have commented on this post long before now as it demonstrates yet again Eircom's only concern is optics and not the impact of this betrayal on customers. In particular I would like to draw your attention to this obviously from the same pen who notoriously uttered the rubbish in my signature.
For close to 90% (86%) of those people impacted, the data at risk is name, address, contact telephone number and possibly an eircom account number

This really is offensive nonsense. 86% is not close to 90%. Try paying 96% of your next Eircom bill and tell them it is close to 100% and you will find out exactly how much Eircom value 4% in that instance!

If we are to go by the figures quoted in the original reports i.e 6845 customers affected (and more notified recently without any explanation for the delay) then 14% represents 958 people. (the 4% conveniently being dismissed represents 274 customers)

So why did you not tell us what personal information has been distributed through Eircom's abject neglect for those customers?

Do you think that we are idiots and you can trot out anything you want?

It is also incredible to read how all these Senior Managers are involved and a third party something or other not to mention all those dedicated staff (dedicated to what precisely given that it is not any sort of professional customer service).

Between all these high power people they couldnt even manage to give a "dedicated" address for sending in the cost of a replacement passport.

Dedication indeed. What an offensive shambles.

So can you tell us please what data was "lost" in respect of the 958 people that you tried to gloss over in your statement above?

Why did Eircom try to gloss over these 958 people?

Can you tell us how many additional people were notified in the recent batch and reason for the delay?

Got an email yesterday from the Data Commissioner:
The case was heard in the Dublin District Court on 10 September, 2012.
Eircom and Meteor both pleaded guilty to three charges arising from the
theft of two unencrypted laptops from an Eircom premises around the last
New Years Day holiday period. The Judge ordered each company to donate
€15,000 to charities nominated by him and he applied the Probation Act in
lieu of a conviction. This was the first prosecution of its kind in
    Ireland.

The above proceedings are a separate matter to this Office's investigation
    of your individual complaint.

Wasn't exactly an earth shattering fine to say the least. Anyway the rest of the mail is about my complaint, I can expect a letter of apology in the post and information on how Meteor found out exactly what information belonging to me was on the laptops in question.
