Forgot to review this race... ran this on Saturday. Well done to all involved in organising, it was great!

Missed last week's run, losing my ever-present status !! Anyway, presume there's a run tomorrow morning ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭James Howlett

Yeph, they mentioned on facebook a while ago that they woul be running up until Christmas but I'm not sure about the 29th December, will have to check tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,409 ✭✭✭plodder

yep, it's on every Sat, including the 29th, unless of course the Mayan apocolypse gets us over the next 12 hours..:pac:

That was fun! I stood looking out my window for a good 20 minutes this morning trying to talk myself into going or not going. I'm glad I did now, really enjoyed that. Good turnout too I thought given the conditions overnight. My time was slower than my previous effort, but it was a swamp in places! Thanks as ever to the organisers and volunteers and happy Christmas!

    Suggestions.
    1. At the start, walk the group in a big loop around (to the right of) the big tree on the green, that way you get everyone behind the start line and more spread-out lengthwise.
    2. Send people off at 20 second intervals in 2 or three groups The path is too narrow for a large group. It would save the grass and potential slips, and encourage people to start from the right spot. A sub 20 and sub 25 group should do it.

    3. Anyone running, bring a spare pair of shoes and socks.

Thanks very much to all the volunteers.

Definitely a different course to the one I did a few weeks ago. In today's conditions you could almost call it a 5k XC race ;)

1st Park Run today. Really great event. Very well organised for a free event and a nice course. Even with the rain lately, it was wet, but I expected worse.
There was a large number of volunteers today, the starting and finishing pieces were fine, no issues from me.
With the weather etc I didn't expect a PB, but finished 24 secs outside a PB and still sub 20.

yes, thought about that before. Its only the last couple of weeks that it has got congested at the start. I didn't think it was too bad though. But, if the numbers build up again in the new year, we'll probably do it.
    2. Send people off at 20 second intervals in 2 or three groups The path is too narrow for a large group. It would save the grass and potential slips, and encourage people to start from the right spot. A sub 20 and sub 25 group should do it.
Problem is we only time each person at the finish. So, everyone has to start together.
    3. Anyone running, bring a spare pair of shoes and socks.
When it's been raining the night before, yes definitely!

Is much of this course on grass? I don't mind running on grass but when it's rained a lot, it can be very slippy.

No, it's all on paths. There is a section of about 500 metres on rough trail that gets a bit muddy/wet in bad weather.

The trail element is very brief & I would have forgotten about it but for your question, enjoy your Parkrun(s).

    Follow up suggestion:

There are several forking paths. Start two groups 100m along paths that converge. Sub 25 to one path, the rest to the other. The loudspeaker and hooter would manage this no problem.

I think you are forgetting the spirit of parkrun, agreenyblue. It's not about the most efficient way to race. It's about participation. And if you want to race it, you do so under the same conditions as other parkruns.

Saw Fit magazine tweet that the Marlay Park ParkRun was very close to being up and running. I wonder did they get the extra funding they needed...?

    Hi,

Any news on a Cork parkrun?

I am recently arrived and having run a few parkruns in the UK I would like to continue here. If anyone is looking into organising a local run then I would be more than happy to help out.

parkrun have posted a reply to a similar post on the parkrun Ireland Facebook site, apparently they have funding for 2 parkruns in Cork and need local volunteers to get them up and running.

I see Eoin O'Callaghan broke the course record on Saturday (16:01). Next step is for someone to go Sub 16. Looks like a big turnout as well.

Like many I have done the BHAA races, the Raheny summer and winter series, the numerous road races etc but the Parkrun for a free event is brilliant. Email after with place, time, position, league standing, AG rating.
Course in Malahide has 3 climbs and is challenging but the standard was very high. Not sure what is going to happen iif it increases further in numbers as it was very crowded at front of field.

Ran the Parkrun in Wimbledon Common on Saturday morning, great event for free, but it was a serious cross country affair. All on park paths, but some of them were just pure mud. Have just about managed to get my clothes clean, though I still have to get the trail shoes hosed down.
Boy was I glad I brought them - one look at the conditions & I switched from my road shoes.

I see it as a great event for the non-club runners, but would be wary it would take from local club races here in Ireland.
What it could do though is really hit the charity runs, there's simply not enough room for all those races and some of the prices they charge.

I did my first parkrun in Malahide on Saturday. It's a great event and one I hope to continue with.

I parked at the car park near the playground. Loads of spaces at that hour of the day, and a short walk to the gathering area.

Being unfamiliar with the set-up, I left myself too near the back; the first K, or so, was spent overtaking and sidestepping.

I ended up going out too fast and paid for it in the last K. Still managed a faster time than I expected.

I am intrigued how the bar code works. I was given a time within a second of the time on my watch.

The stopwatch is clicked each time a runner crosses the line. The scanners pair xeach runner's position to their individual parkrun ID. Stopwatch and scanner are connected to a PC and the files are uploaded to the parkrun site. The runner IDs are sorted by position and matched to the list of times.

It all depends on the person with the stopwatch paying attention and keeping an accurate count if a group come in together, likewise the person with the tokens has to make sure everyone in the chute gets a token and nobody switched position in the chute.

thats a pity - hopefully the event gets more airtime as it grows.

Tom Williams from MT was doing a Parkrun roadshow a couple of months ago - he went all round UK & NI.
Parkrun Ireland should invite him to Malahide or even Marleys 1st event.......

Danny seemed quite puzzled on Saturday as to how there could be two names with pretty much the same spelling but yet pronounced completely differently (Michael and Micheal). Was amused last night when I heard him go with the Russian pronunciation rather than the Irish one!

Shows how much attention I was paying over the years as I never even noticed that they were spelt differently. :D

I thought it was just people being awkward with the pronunciation. ;)

Marlay parkrun will hold their first event on Saturday 9th March @9:30am. The Marlay parkrun facebook page is up, parkrun site with registration will follow in late Feb. Start-up funding was provided by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Is the registration not the same as the Malahide race? I would have thought that once you are registered with ParkRun, your details would be valid for any of the venues?

If you have already registered for Malahide there is no need to register again. Any one who has not yet registered with parkrun can register with Malahide or wait until the Marlay site is up.

Afaik, once you have a barcode, you can use it anywhere, including the Uk races.

If you are already registered for Malahide then it is also possible to change your "home" event to another one through the parkrun website once they are setup.

That's what I thought. Just seemed unusual they they were saying that registrations will be open later. I'd hate to have to laminate another batch of bar codes.

Well of course there are people who will want to register for the first time, with Marlay Park as their "home" parkrun.

well done Liamo66 in getting it up & running and credit to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown CoCo for understanding the potential & popularity of the event in commiting the funding for it.

So you thought that was just the Gaeilgeoirí being a bit precious - honestly!

It is Great news about Marlay though, having seen 377 running in Malahide it's arrived at the perfect time to spread the load and still have two great big runs. I won't be surprised if there is a bumper turnout there with the new blood and lots of those already on it wanting to try the new flavor.

    Go Parkrun

Hey all – I’m a bit late getting to this but just wanted to say that the lady who ran in Malahide last weekend (who was running her 117th Parkrun or something mental like that!) won the ladies race. The results have me as first lady down but unfortunately I can’t claim it this week. Adventure racing is clearly not for me… and certainly not after a month off running and an excessive/gluttonous Christmas! :D As always, it was a great run. Well done and thanks for everything guys.

Really looking forward to Marlay getting up and running too. It’ll be easier to do my volunteering duties locally :)

Hi Claralara, wasn't it Annette Kealy from Raheny who was first lady? Slim lady with dark hair & glasses wearing compression socks? She was definitely there on the start line and she has run it before in 18:xx so I thought she was the leader?

How's your back? Maybe see you at the Raheny five if it's on the mend?

Another great morning in Malahide, a few water obstacles added to the challenge earlier, well done to all those who make these races happen.
