Fundraising queries

I'm considering doing a marathon later this year and while part of it is a big personal challenge of doing the marathon distance, I'm also thinking of trying to raise sponsorship for a hospice in the north.

I guess my concern is that seeing I'm from the north myself, but currently I'm based in Dublin, would people down here be willing to sponsor something that's not really "local"? I don't want to try to raise sponsorship and then be struggling to get €100 or €200 euro or something.

But part of me thinks that people may not be so keen to give over money for something that's not really in their general area, and I guess in this case, technically a different country.

It's a very personal reason why I want to raise sponsorship for this particular place as opposed to one of the many charities and other worthwhile causes in Dublin and elsewhere in the Republic.

Just wondering if others have similar experiences?

Id say so... A hospice normally would be something that would serve people in its locality so fundraising for such organisations can really only take place in its cachement area.

If its a case of a family member got great care there then perhaps would you raise funds for a hospice local to where you live, as in reality they all provide a wonderful service? Or contact the hospice to see do they have a more local fundraising network who could throw out some sponsorship cards in the cachement area to raise funds for your marathon.

Hating to be negative on it but Iv seen everything from local playgrounds to cancer support groups in rural areas cross parochial boundaries recently causing upset, and as has been reported many overseas charities (while they are different to what I was saying above) are finding it massively difficult to get funding - I know one small charity didnt get any "new" postal donations for over four months last year.

You could be right. I do foresee some difficulties in getting people to give money for something across the border.

Hmmm, I need another plan then...
