Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. We all know it’s a big crock of **** and that it was made up to sell cards, fill restraints and make jewelers money but do any of my fellow singles out there feel worse / lonelier on St.Valentines Day?

It wasn't made up for this, its an old tradition that dates back centuries.

Here's some fun Valentines Day facts!

It's really just carrying on the tradition, like most holidays are. I sent cards to my boyfriend and family and friends, spread a bit of love, let them know I'm thinking of them :)

Sadly I can't be with my Valentine though so my restraints will be empty :(

I considered putting 'Happy Made up Lets Get them Spending Money Again after the Post Christmas Lull' as my facebook status today.....but I figure all them posting flowers n hearts n such **** would take offence and it would become a big discussion. Facebook is not for discussions. Boards is.

Hmmm, I posted "14th February, the one day where love CAN be bought" as my status and have had nothing but likes :p (and all from people who are in relationships)

When I was younger I knew a fella that broke up with his girlfriend just before Christmas one year and got back together with her in January, just so he wouldn't have to buy her anything! The poor girl couldn't see what was wrong with this.

The miserable git actually tried to do the same less than 2 months later for Valentines day, but when he tried to get back with her afterwards she finally copped on and told him where to go!

I find the people/couples I know that don't celebrate VD tend to be the boring and miserable type.

Some people are just plain tight. Some can't afford to go too crazy but a card will cost 2 quid and you can get a decent bunch of flowers for a 10er somewhere.

As for me, got the gf a bouquet of roses, some jewellery and I'm treating her to dinner this evening.

    It's only once a year :)

"I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame the earth seems to me a sterile promotory; this most excellent canopy the air, look you, this mighty o'rehanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire; why, it appeareth nothing to me but a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, how like an angel in aprehension, how like a God! The beauty of the world, paragon of animals; and yet to me, what is this quintessence of dusk. Man delights not me, no, nor women neither, nor women neither."

When all the office girls start leaving work at around 5pm, it'll be interesting to see how many are holding their bunches of flowers in front of them as they walk down the street, in the same manner as Del Boy once did with a Filofax!

I was in asda the other day and spotted a valentines day section, my favorite item of romance was the spaghetti bolognese readymeals for two.

Pancake day is the superior day, I may not need a day to eat pancakes but it gives me a free hand to eat many more than usual over the entire day.

A pancake in the shape of a heart?

More crass consumerist BS. If a guy spent €80 (!) of his hard earned cash on me for a bunch of flowers I'd be really disappointed in him tbh.

Men shouldn't be pressured into showing their love for their partner through how much money they throw at a gift, whatever the occasion. I think most guys only buy roses and chocolates today because it's expected, not because they really want to.
And where's the thrill in getting flowers or chocs. if you know he's only doing it because it's expected due to social convention?

I'd much prefer to be surprised with a few wild flowers that I love or something small but meaningful to me as a gift that shows a sign of love or affection on any of the other 364(65 this year) days of the year. And if you really care for someone you should let them know every day in ways that don't involve just putting your hand in your pocket.

No. It's pure rubbish. Even if I was in a relationship, I'd want to have an agreement that we ignore Valentine's Day. No flowers, no cards, none of the nonsense it has become. I used love Valentine's Day when I was a kid, and you'd have no idea who sent you a card. And hope you hadn't been spotted legging it back out of the driveway/garden of whichever boy you'd your eye on after sneaking his (unsigned) card in the letter box of his house.

Can't stand all its hysteria these days.

One of my best mates who I secretly loved passed away a few weeks ago, he had asked me out on a date a few days before he passed away (the feeling must have been mutual :)) so I'll be sitting in thinking about him :(

Very depressing day for some people, it actually shouldn't even exist.

It's bollocks but it's also the cause of some really nice sweet stuff - like kids making cards, making a new relationship feel special, etc.
It's what you make it - I personally see it as a day where people are sweet to anyone they care about, not just their partners if they have one. All the paraphernalia is just a racket but little sincere gestures are nice. :)

It's just a bit of a laugh too.

Yep me too. Don't like valentines day. Money making racket really. Pointless putting in all that effort to celebrate one day like that when you can express yourself in that way 356 days of the year just because one stupid day says so! (add 357 this year!) Leap year or a wedding is better celebrated...

Its a day on my calender that doesn't exist and its just another day to me.

I am not as soppy as I once was so grown out of that cac. So yes the whole cards and gifts for v day is all cac.

Couldn't give a monkeys. When you can share and celebrate other occasions that are more important like birthdays and Christmas. Something everyone can share while valentines day isn't for everyone whether coupled up or single!

Sentimentality is more important than just giving soppy presents and gifts unless they mean something to the other person. Its the thought that counts not just the gift itself.

I've never been going out with someone or been with anyone long enough to celebrate such a silly day so the day has meant nothing to me.

So never have celebrated it since I were a child.

    Cue the bucket...

Its an extremely commercialised day that shouldn't really exist. St Valentine, I don't even know why he called a saint at all, we really don't honour him at all like except exchange gifts and cards and what not. It wasn't all about love.

Unfortunately like other holidays and days of celebration-Easter, Christmas, -Valentines day has been appropriated by corporate entities out to make a quick buck charging inflated prices for flowers and cards and other gifts. It ruins the spirit of it for many people.

    The Story of St. Valentine
The Roman Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars. He wanted a
strong army, but many men did not want to be soldiers. Claudius thought
the men wanted to stay home to be with their wives and children instead
    of leaving to fight wars.
Claudius thought of an awful solution to his problem. He decided to cancel
all marriages! No one in all of Rome could get married. Claudius thought
that if the men couldn’t get married, the men would ignore the women
    and want to be soldiers.
Valentine, who was a priest, believed that people needed to get married.
He thought that if they were not married, they would be tempted to sin by
living together without being married. So he secretly and illegally married
couples anyway! He performed the weddings in secret places, so the
Roman soldiers would not find out.
But they did find out. Valentine was arrested and brought before the
Emperor. The Emperor thought Valentine was a well spoken and wise
young man, and encouraged him to stop being a Christian and become a
loyal Roman. Valentine would not deny his beliefs, and he refused. He was
sent to prison until he could be executed. While he was in prison, he sent
out letters to his friends and asked to be prayed for by writing Remember
    your Valentine
    .
Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the year 269 or
    270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14
    th in honor of St.
    Valentine.

    believe it if ya like:p

I knew valentines day wasn't totally related to the 14th, he was buried I think on that date but born a different date. So chances are he died a different day...or died the 14th and was buried on that date or died the 14th and buried a later date or died a different day and buried on the 14th...

I just don't get why people have to take it so seriously? Its a made-up holiday to spend money for no reason?

People say ist the one day of the year where you show you care.
So by that logic I should get my girlfriend flowers and ignore her calls and texts from February 15th onwards?

I show her I care 365 days of the year, and because I'm not "Lovey Dovey" and wear a ****ing heart and sing to her on her balcony means I'm an ass.

    Valentines day is for chumps.
