Won't the poor eventually be extinct? They'd starve to death.

Its not a question of if, the rich are already getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

As long as I can afford my €1 pack of donuts from Dunnes I don't care how poor I am.

Though if I were rich I could buy an endless supply of them.......

how are the poor getting poorer when they're able to afford more consumer goods than ever before in human history?

It's quite a devious form of natural selection.

'rich get richer and the poorer get poorer'

This is a tagline from socialist/communist propaganda, i.e. ignore it because their POV is nonsense.

Every country that I can think of has a progressive tax system so the wealth is always being redistributed in some way.

I think the phrase refers to the expanding disparity of wealth between the richest and poorest in a given society and the fact that many of the people making the least money are actually making less than they would have in the past, in real terms.

Indeed, nowhere in the world do people starve to death.

    Well done buddy.

Would you like some lovely crayons?

As the rich get richer, the number of people in the world living in conditions of absolute poverty get smaller: "We estimate that between 2005 and 2010, nearly half a billion people escaped extreme hardship, as the total number of the world's poor fell to 878 million people"

Also, expenditure on food as a percentage of income is decreasing all the time... doesn't that mean the poor are getting richer?

Everything is relative..Rich get richer, poor get less poor..the gap between rich and poor must be maintained else their is no incentive to try to become rich and if everyone has the same then everyone has nothing.

Don't worry our government are making new poor every day.

Socialists would always prefer us to all live in poverty, instead of allowing a situation where a few people have the skills or luck to make a lot of money while the rest of us live a comfortable middle class life.

I thought that was the Chinese? Or the Jews? Or the NWO?

There's so much BS flying around it's hard to tell the difference anymore.

The poor are getting more poor not less in this country, or don't you read the news?. "The poor must be maintained else their(sic) is no incentive to try to become rich..."? yes because if there's no poor why would anyone possibly want to get wealthy.

And if everyone has the "same" they may have the same high income-witness Scandinavia as an example of the most egalitarian countries where poverty is at very low levels and the majority are middle-class (by our standards) who earn decent wages because of their social welfare model that favours fairer tax distribution than our own.

No, quite the opposite. Food poverty is one of the measures used to assess overall poverty in society.
