It's actually a good idea to disband the army as money that could be saved there could be used to boost RTE's coffers and pay outside contractors exorbitant salaries for 75 mins work per day. :P

What other country has an entirely voluntary Army?

I wish he gave an actual example.

I think these people are forgetting how cheaply you can run the army, versus what it costs to run the Police force. A newly qualified private earns about 16,000 a year basic pay. What does a newly qualified guard earn?

+ the extra revenue they can earn the State on UN duty

Plus free clothes, food, accommodation etc. You forgot to factor those in.

They are forgetting one thing, if they disband the army, what will all the soldiers do? Go on the live register?! Can't exactly join another army, can they.

I hate all the "everybody loves us because we're neutral little Ireland" rubbish.

Mose people of influence on the planet have never heard of Ireland.

What's "a coincidence of interest"? I've heard of "a conflict of interest" before, but not a "coincidence"......

He was allowed ramble off his craziness uninterrupted for ages, but once he said anything negative about Fianna Fail, Joe cuts him down.

Callers over the last 2 years have made a million and one ways to save money, rants about public servents wages in state and semi companies are almost weekly.
I know it's always joked about, but how the hell is the TV licence fee and RTE wages never mentioned? Never mind the subject raised, but no one ever even mentions it!

Whatever bitterness he feels towards his old comrades is keeping Tom alive :)

I don't think these guys quite understand what is involved in cutting about 35% of state spending at a time when unemployment has trebled.

I can't understand why people are still surprised.

The Air Corps does loads of emergency medical transfers with its helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, Joe, 27 already this year.

But then you could disband them and set up a dedicated emergency medical corps and forget the military aspect. Similarly, for those who argued "ah shure they'll deliver oil / respond to floods" - isn't that just an argument to set up a dedicated emergency response agency and forget the military aspect?

I suppose so never looked at it that way, I'm based in the big schmoke ;) so thats why I wouldn't do it for love nor money. I wouldn't want any of my family doing it either.
