    Just wondering.....

Has Joe ever expressed any political aspirations or thoughts of running for higher office, thus fulfilling his destiny?

    Serious question!

But then you could disband them and set up a dedicated emergency medical corps and forget the military aspect. Similarly, for those who argued "ah shure they'll deliver oil / respond to floods" - isn't that just an argument to set up a dedicated emergency response agency and forget the military aspect?

That's far too sensible for this country, go and have a lie down!

Joe wouldn't get out of bed for less that 7,000 a day, no money to be made in politics anymore

It's a bit rich, no pun intended, Joe Duffy preaching socialism to us on his soap box.. I guess the only thing is that Jack O'Connor, Joe Duffy, David Begg and the like, who have been bleeding the country dry, wont be able to find jobs for all their kids in the public service.. So they'll reap what they've sewn, as they wave goodbye to their kids same as everybody else in the country...

To be fair, he probably puts in a solid 3 or 4 hours to earn that.

I suppose so never looked at it that way, I'm based in the big schmoke ;) so thats why I wouldn't do it for love nor money. I wouldn't want any of my family doing it either.

I was in a small town in the west and someone had their car mirror broken. Squad car was down with 3 garda questioning people and everything!
In Dublin if your car is stolen they couldn't give a rats ass!

The army will never be disbanded here even though its role is largely ceremonial a bit like the presidents, its a bit like the public sector in general (outside the necessary numbers), jobs for the sake of them.

But the fella gave you the reason against that a minute ago. A soldier and a policeman(and for policeman, you can put any other Civil servant), standing next to each other the soldier gets paid the same amount whether its an 8 16 or 24 hour duty. The Guard gets 16 hours over time for a 24 hour duty. This would be the same for the dedicated emergency response agency; if there was a disaster out side of the normal 40 hours a week, it would cost the state more in overtime and allowances.

Yeah but that's the Joe Duffy that had a sit in protest in Trinity when he found out that the lecturers meals were being subsidised by the students... He doesnt have any problems with subsidies these days.. Once the money started coming in his door through the truck load, his principles went out the window..

I was thinking more in his "retirement", like a Presidential role. He'd probably win too, with the entire OAP population voting for him.

Or indeed, as a top-up to is current role? Joe Duffy TD, representing Clontarf. RTE would probably accommodate him and move Lahv Lahn to a time he could present........

Or should I dare plant these seeds in a public forum?
