Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

I just got a scooter which is just after having its battery replaced and as I was driving it home the battery gauge on the display kept dropping and now it wont start. Any ideas what it could be?

It's most likely the regulator/rectifier is not recharging the battery so it drained by powering the lights, the more you try to take out of your battery now the more permanent damage you do to it.

OK thanks for the reply but what does that mean exactly? How do I fix it?

Get your rectifier replaced. Get the battery charged. The battery could be fecked, if it is you'll have to buy another one.

Don't replace the battery before the rectifier or you could kill that too!

You need to check if the bike is producing power before you go replacing stuff.
Check the generator circuit is producing power, if it is then check the reg/rectifier is working.
If thats working then check the battery is good, just because it was replaced doesn't mean it is good.

Your battery is there to start the scooter and little else. A continuous load or drain will use it up fairly quickly.
Your scooter has an alternator which goes around with the engine and can generate electricity as needed, only problem is its AC and high voltage, here is where the r/r comes in, it rectifies the ac to dc like your battery and regulates it to a slightly higher voltage than the battery so it basically trickle charges it constantly, replacing charge used in starting and supplying lights etc. If any stage of this from alternator to r/r is damaged it ends up with a dead battery, most likely in my experience is r/r but as CJH says it could be any stage so check before you throw kit away.
To be honest I doubt you will be able to fix it yourself if an r/r is new to you. Some here don't like it but if you try biker.ie there's always someone willing to help out.

Did you get it from a shop or private?

If a shop bring it back as it's not fit for purpose and get them to fix it.

If private then you'll need to do as the others said.

    Private.

Thanks a million for the replies. I will have to get a mechanic.
