Using an xbox 360 on an old Monitor

I'm considering getting an xbox 360 since there are loads of old games that can be picked up for next to nothing.
I'm on a really tight budget though. I don't have a TV and can't afford one.
    I have and old LCD monitor 19" (native res 1280 × 1024)
Xbox to VGA cables are cheap.
How will games look at this res. It's not widescreen and I know most games are designed with 720p or 1080p in mind.
Obviously it will not look at good but will it still be perfectly playable?
Will in game text be legible?

Did this for a few years, games will look fine.
Text will be legible, I never had an issue.

Yeah no issues for me. I had a smaller screen and the same res and it worked great

Same as above. Used an 18" monitor for about a year with a V.G.A. cable from X-Box. Sound wasn't a problem either.
