India-Rose immediately sprang to mind for me too. I think that's the name of a the child of some celebrity.

Supernova84 you need to get out more. Ever been? Have you swam in the Liffey lately?

Thanks to most of you for the great suggestions. Love India Rose.

India Lee and India Roisin is great too.

    Hmm so many great ideas.....

Point taken. Well at least I threw India Roisin into the mix for you. Best of luck!

At the risk of sounding like I'm trolling I'll mention that there is another porn star called India (just India).
I dont know of any people that arent porn stars who are called India. Here we have two people that are porn stars who are called India.
Maybe something a little more traditional would be doing the kid a favour.

I like India as a child's name but on it's own nothing added on to it . People will shorten it back to India anyway so why bother

  • Registered Users Posts: 949 ✭✭✭LoanShark

My niece is called India. There is no second name to go with it. As a family we do shorten it to Indy, or lengthen it to indianna.. At first when I heard what they were gonna call her, I thought they were mad, now I think tue name suits the child..

Also her mothers family are of Indian origin, so she has the characteristics to
    Carry of such a name..

But to answer your question, what would you add to it, I'd try India-Grace..

Wow you must really like porn. Me... I prefer the real thing. Check this out (just to broaden your horizons and give you something to use the Internet for other than porn)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_(given_name)

Agreed with keeping India on its own. I like it much better too but with our surname i don't know if it goes.

Thanks again for the inputs. Its all been very very helpful....:)

lol I couldn't name very many porn stars tbh. It does seem like the most famous people called india are porn stars though. I haven't heard of any of the ten non-porn famous people in that list.

    You might consider this too:

All I can say is how disappointing :(

Ireland is changing though. I'm hoping by the time it matters to baby India, it will have changed enough

Can we stop with the discussions on porn stars names, final warning. Keep it on topic and suggest names like the OP asked, proper names, not names like India Tech Support.

India is a beautiful name-dont mind all the people who drag up how she could be slagged or there are porn stars with that name etc, just wait until you see her and you will know what to call her.

names will always be shortened, teased or compared in one way or another!
    India may is lovely though.
best of luck with the birth!

But surely you know the name is going to raise eyebrows? What you might consider wonderful and unique, many would consider just plain odd. It's like calling a kid Shakira if you ask me…

Will I just call her Mary?

Thanks for your input though, it's inspiring me to go with India more than ever.

Love India Marie and India May. They have been added to the shortlist-which ain't that short anymore!

What's wrong with Mary? You could go with Pocahontas if you want to keep the Indian theme…

Oh come'on...I have a very mainstream name and the kids still found some way to tease me over it. That's the reality of life and there's no point in conforming to anyone else's idea of what is "normal" with the hope of fitting in.

OP - I think India is a lovely name & I'm sure you'll come up with a great name combo :)

India Arie is a singer, like that name:)

    India May is lovely.
I love the name Joy as a middle name- India Joy :D

    You might consider this too:
    [Freakonomics Vid]

This is interesting but very localised, I mean Tyrone is an African American name? Surely not, I supose it's like when we hear of americans or australians called coleen, and we're like "you called your daughter - girl?".

Real Irish names aren't always easier, when I worked in england my boss announced that an Irish girl called 'Ooff' would be starting the next week and we had to explain the pronunciation of Aoife.

btw The only porn star I could put a face to is called Ron, a name that I always associate with midddle aged grey polyester wearing middle management.

India is a beautiful name but as another poster said, it doesn't always fit the child (like any name really).

That's not really the point of it. It's saying that the name can be an indicator of economic circumstance. Like over here, names like Britney, Chardonnay and Kylie are probably not going to be names of choice of middle class parents…

Two people I know had girls last year and both called them Indie. Second names were Rose and Mai.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald

India rose is a nice name . Again no matter what you pick for a second name it will only be you that will use it her friends will shorten it . I know loads of people in Limerick who's name is Pakistan and people shorten that to paki .:D that's just one example I can think of

I think you missed my point though, the perception of some names that were referred to in the video is local not global. In Ireland we would not tend to assume that Tyrone is an African American. It is also age related prior to Britney Spears fame/infamy, Brittany or Britony was a popular middle class name in the UK at least. I understand your point, but it wasn't mine. While in Ireland we might assume that Chardonnay is less than middle class, in France they might be more inclined to say "You're called after a grape?"

But you are not naming your child in a global context, are you? Obviously the video is looking at names in an American setting and certain names are not going to have the same loaded connotations in one area or country that they would in another. Tyrone would be a popular African-American name and would have a different connotation in the States than it would have here. But the point still remains, certain names are going to come attached with economic associations, in the place you live, which might not benefit the child - it doesn't really matter if it means grape or girl in another country.

Not targeting the name India and excuse the cynicism here but giving a child a 'unique' name is not for the benefit of the child but for the benefit of the parents being able to showcase their 'uniqueness' imo. It's like those fecking awful, phlegm inducing, previously unheard of Irish names beloved of people recently…

The point being made in the video was actually that certain names inspired assumptions of race and consequently assumptions of education achievement, and while related, this is not the same as economic associations. The point was made by at least two people.

I think it would be impossible to name your child 'in a global context'. Should I assume that you are very comfortably middle class since you don't appear to consider the massive emigration rates from Ireland when naming children?

Yes, the video is related to America and assumptions of race but it is not difficult to transplant the notion to Ireland and economic/class background. If you meet a child called Britney and Shakira from Ireland, it will be a safe enough bet that the child's parents come from a working class background. Conversely, names like Lorcan and Finian are more likely going to given to kids with middle class backgrounds.

You've lost me here. Are you saying that I should take into account the fact I might have to emigrate when I name my children? Thank God I called them Sheila and Alf then…

By the way, I really have no idea what you are getting at with the last point.

I think this is the only justifiable use of the name. Even Brooklyn Beckham was an unkind name.

If you like the name go with it - it's not an odd and as names go I think it's not bad and will fit in here ok...personnally I do hate any add on names however like India - Mai or what ever but that's me.

(my ex's German Shepard was called India btw!)

I personally dislike the name India anything. When I think of India I think of dirty rivers and Shanty towns.

Same here. we are expecting at the moment and my husband really wants to call the baby India if it's a girl. The first things that come to mind are rats, poverty and leprosy.
