Ah, so now people have to have *justifiable* reasons to pick a name?!?

Let's see...some people "justify" their child's name because:
    1) Family/friend connections
    2) A memory (i.e.: the reasoning behind "Brooklyn")
    3) They like fitting in so that everyone will know how to pronounce/spell the name & they can delude themselves that no one will pick on the child's name
    4) They like being different so that their child won't be the 125th Margaret/Paddy/etc in the class
    5) Because they *like* it (!)

Now, call me nuts, but we named our second child Emily, not for reasons 1-4, but instead purely because of reasoning #5. I think the OP is just as "justified" for selecting India as his/her future daughter's name.

I dont like or dislike it but i would not use it myself.
I took the 40 yr old into consideration - the child that is. I tried to imagine the 40 yr old adult introducing themselves to a room full of peers, and would the name embarrass them in any way - hence my firstborn in not called Wolf.
A name is for life and not just for infanthood so all the cute little Poppys, Alfies, Lili-Mays out there have to grow up and go out into the world and may not thank you when they are standing in front of a boardroom full of people.

If he was to rise to high rank in the army however.......... WOW, what a name.

Wolf is a name that would just grow with awesomeness as a person got older. You'd have to call them Cub or something though until about 18. A toddler called Wolf would just be wrong…

Hello... how bout that ride in?
I guess that's why they call it Sin City haha.

You guys might not know this but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack.
But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one.

So there... there was two of us in the wolf pack. I was alone first in the pack and Doug joined in later.
And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys I thought "wait a second, could it be?"
And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack.

Four of us wolves, running around the desert together in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine.

Completely agree with Ayla. As if a name needs justifying. If it does then here is my justification. Numbers 1 and 5 from the list. The baby will have Indian roots as well as being Irish. And just cos we like it!

To the people associating India with rats etc. You seriously need to open your mind. What are you basing this opinion on? Maybe a film or what? I hope that when the name Ireland is mentioned it is not associated with leprechauns, alcoholics and the god awful weather. The list could go on.

If a name puts a person at a disadvantage when applying for jobs etc. then there is a serious problem. I've justified my reasons for the name but do you really think that it is a justifiable enough reason not to call a child by a name that is not Irish?

tfitzgerald, just in case you weren't aware that term you have used is highly racist and offensive. Please edit your post

Well, if I met a child called Ireland I wouldn't let them near me. They'd be after me lucky charms!

And Ireland as a name is beyond terrible…

That's easy enough to get around with a middle name or shortening it, Moon Unit Zappa got over it.
I had to modify the way I spell my name because it's Gaelic with a Scottish standard spelling so it was constantly mispelt/mispronounced in Ireland and England never mind further abroad. I know several people who use one name for friends and another for work and in one case a third one for family. In Hong Kong it's common for people to have a chinese name and a 'western name', so Chan Po Man becomes Peter Chan when he gets to the office

I think India is a beautiful name, BUT I would assume it would have a nice story as to why it was picked. I can't think of many other names that this would apply to.
I'm fairly sure that everyone that ever meets her will ask the question and be disapointed by the answer. Is that what you want for your daughter?

I think instead of being offended by all the people that have come on here and made jokes about it, take it as a possible insight into your daughters future.

With regards to the Freakonomics video, according to the book, if we lived in America both my kids are white trash:rolleyes: (or future porn stars)

Offended no, maybe just a little surprised!

I don't think it is an insight in to my daughters future though. I would be wrong to look at it that deeply.

I'm really encouraged actually, generally the reply's have been positive and has given me some great ideas. I am chuffed at how many people like it.

One thing I have taken from it though is the advice to wait until the baby is born. I completely agree (something that didnt occur to me before) that when she is born she just may not look like an India. So we better get thinking of some back up names......

Thanks again for the inputs, all noted. Any other ideas more than welcome! :)

Yes, putting Unit as her middle name really made it seem less stupid…

    Made me think of this:

    Alec Baldwin, awesome.

OP, it's up to you to name your child what you want. That said, I have a relatively strange surname, and it didn't make things that fun when I was a kid. It's not as if I suffered a constant barrage of abuse, but it does gives bullies another stick to beat you with, so I wouldn't give my kids anything but standard names (and big sticks to beat bullies with, of course).

I worked with a guy who called his baby girl 'China'

He got nothing but stick over it tbh.. behind his back and to his face :o

There's just something a little cringy about giving an Irish child such an exotic name.

    Maybe Eireann/Erin for a girl..

    Sorry :o

    Thread closed for now.

I am pretty sure this was started as a genuine thread and despite mod warnings the trolling continued.
    Infractions will be handed out.
