Noob Build - Video Editing / Multimedia

1. What is your budget?
650

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
In no particular order, but the HD video processing is beyond my current machines and is a deal breaker for me.
(i) Family PC
(ii) Programming, MatLab Image & Video Processing
(iii) HD Video editing w/ some yet unknown COTS software

3. Do you need a copy of Windows?
I'll get a student copy of Win7.

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?
(i) 750GB SATA 7200rpm will be sufficient (main storage on Ubuntu server on network)
(ii) DVD/RW (NEC DVD+-RW ND-3530A) & CD/RW (Sony CRX216E) if my money is better spent on new processor/RAM
(iii) Have an old GeForce 7300GT DDR2 512MB AGP in a box somewhere if its not completely useless
(iv) wifi card

5. Do you need a monitor?
Probably, but might be willing to reuse Dell E193FP if money can be better spent on processor & RAM

5a. If yes, what size do you need.
I'd probably lean towards 21"-23"

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
1280 x 1024
I would upgrade at some stage in the future if I went this route

6. Do you need any of these peripherals?

7. Are you willing to try overclocking?
Don't think I'd be prepared to go there yet!

This would be a first build although I have delved into the bowels of several computers over several years, but limited to adding components like HDDs, audio/video cards, wifi cards, RAM etc.

And should come in under your total €650 budget when you add Windows. I focused heavily on the processor - it's a fully overclockable one (gowan!) so you'll be set for years. You'll have to chuck €20-30 at a decent CPU cooler if you want to go for anything other than a mild overclock though, as the stock cooler won't cut it.

I also added in an SSD as boot drive; should help generally make things snappy, as well as a semi-decent graphics card for light gaming if you ever want to go there.

I left out a monitor, as I'm not sure if you want to get one or not. A cheap, decent-ish one would be about €100. That's for a 1080p 22", I believe.

@deconduo, firstly thanks for the reply. Are you proposing 16GB RAM or 8, price provided is same as Serephucus seems to be suggesting for 8GB? Is that processor overclockable ( I was to strap on a pair!)?

@Serehucus, thanks also. At what point in terms of GPU spec do I need to upgrade the PSU also, I might not get a graphics card now, but would like to futureproof if not prohibitively expensive

Would it be crazy to do this without the SSD? Would push the boat out if it meant more reliable, faster system.

Both the processors are overclockable (they both are K variants), though the one deconduo specced is idential to the 2500K, but it has Hyperthreading, meaning you get two virtual cores per physical core, which can help out a lot with video editing and the like.

The PSU in both builds would do you up until about a 6870, at which point you'd want to switch to a 550W unit for anything stronger, which would do you up to the highest-end card out at the moment, the 7970.

I'd personally keep the SSD. You'd gain more keeping it in than you would putting the money toward other stuff, I think.

Its two 8GB kits for €32 each. I didn't spec a graphics card as you wouldn't be gaming, but if thats the plan then go with the build Serephecus did instead.

An SSD isn't needed, but its nice to have. It wouldn't be more reliable, but it makes things a lot faster.

Thanks again for the prompt responses guys, am leaning towards deconduo's build as gaming isn't my thing and anything to help video editing is a must. I need to check if my existing optical drives are IDE or SATA, the suggested motherboard doesn't seem to support IDE from what I can make out. Would this be equivalent if I have to reuse an IDE optical drive

That board is actually the one myself and deconduo would have recommended, except it was out of stock earlier today. :P

It doesn't support IDE either (from what I can see) though.

Big thanks to Deconduo & Serephucus for their help - I tweeked the spec slightly from suggested (hopefully I haven't messed up) and added the HWVS assembly because it was so cheap and her indoors didn't want a pile of components on the desk!!! Also broke out and got a screen, and will be picking up Win7 from software4students
