Anyone in the Matthew Hill / Lehenaghmore area in Cork signed up yet?
The cabinet on Matthew Hill has a yellow tag on it so based on this thread that means it's live. I'm 400 meters from it but Eircom told me today my area isn't live yet.

Posting from my new broadband connection. Was 5 Mbps yesterday.

I've had 3 eircom engineers here since 9am as there was a problem on the line outside which needed to be fixed first.

    All sorted now. :D
On a different note, how fast are YouTube videos loading? Specifically HD videos.

Can you get your ping any lower?

    Ballincollig exchange

I'd guess about 300m from the cabinet.
Seem to be on the stable profile.

Is the yellow tag on the new cabinet i'm guessing ? had a look around Castlebar but the only ones with yellow tags were the old cabinets.

Guys if you can do some ping tests to www.rte.ie and to www.boards.ie and www.bbc.co.uk

    also, try downloading from

I guess as more and more of you lucky 'blighters' get connected to fibre that 'slower than 65% of IE' will begin to rise.

No plans at all to put fibre cabs from my exchange :(

    I hate this thread!

Vodafone only have the option of "up to 70Mb" so that's what I'm on.

The profile enabled appears to be 50174 kb/sec down and 15359 kb/sec up.

Having had no more than about 1.5Mb for the last few years, I don't know what to do with 10Mb, let alone 50 or 70!

Just tried YouTube HD videos. When I load into a new tab it seems to play pretty much straight away. It seems to preload in a block (about 2 mins worth) and then just stay well ahead of your progress, if that makes sense. Out of interest I've loaded 7 tabs with HD video and they are all streaming seamlessly. :D

How can I get the ping lower? Keep retrying speed tests?

Here is a good article about ping. Basically ping allows you to test the connectivity of a host machine/node. Gamers usually would want a low ping to ensure that they have a great response time during battles, especially in fps.

Pings spike when somebody is streaming on your network and your bandwidth sucks. It can annoying for most folk who have a low download or upload connection. For example, my ping spikes if I play an fps game and my dad is updating apps on his smartphone or he uses the World radio app. It is difficult to stream that amount of data.

YouTube throttle videos to save bandwidth.

To see if your ping can get any lower, you can speed test different servers (usually the ones that are closest are lower but it depends on various other factors). Your ping looks ok tho for FTTC at that distance.

some amount of eircom engineers at the new cabinets today in Ennis. i mapped a few of them and I think there was 3 or 4 eircom guys at every one when i passed on the way to mcdonalds. all at the same time. any ideas what they're doing?

I saw more around bank place as well. Must be fibre. Tested a line on lahinch road and says it takes up to 70mb

    Justmac,

thanks! the download rate was approx. 3979 kb per second. not too bad. Around 4 megabytes per second. Youtube streaming 7 HD vids at the same time is awesome.

The ping rates are actually kind of disappointing. I get 15 ms less to each of those destinations on an 18m/bit x 2m/bit dsl line. Not saying your pings are bad. The difference will matter to hard core gamers. It could be a Vodafone thing also. Looking forward to seeing some numbers from other providers!

    well done anyway,

you lucky so n so :)

Just had the eircom engineers set me up on behalf of Vodafone. I'm in Drogheda around 800m from the cabinet. Had been getting around 5 Mbps down and maybe 2 up. The guys had a few issues getting the connection right and it took them an hour.

Now am getting 28.5 Mbps down and 7.3 up, based on an average of iPhone wifi speedtests. Not as spectacular as some but the difference to me is huge. Almost 6 times faster and it feels it....no buffering on HD YouTube videos which usually happened on the old speed. The acid test for me was playing the Cloud Atlas trailer on YouTube through an Apple TV....I always had to wait half a minute to let it get ahead....that's no more!

    Overall pleased with this increase!

Can anyone tell me the % decrease in ping times from before and after fibre installation? I'm getting it some time next year and currently am on a DSL 55ms ping. Was wondering if i'd see a drop to a ping of around 20/30ms???

    Thanks.
