Merchandising and defunct bands

Struck me as I saw another 20 something with a Joy Division T shirt that these old bands must still be around in some corporate way. So how does it work, do the remaining members have shares in a company called Joy Division which licenses the merchandising. When it comes to Guns and Roses does Axel get all the merchandising
