A dog type is not a breed. Whether your dog is a banned type depends on what it looks like, rather than its breed or name.
If your dog matches many of the characteristics of a Pit Bull Terrier, it may be a banned type. This is because dogs with these characteristics are more likely than other dogs to cause severe harm if they attack.
It won’t matter what type or breed a dog’s parents were. (Cross-bred and mongrel dogs can have the characteristics of a Pit Bull Terrier.)

So even if your dog is not a banned type but looks like one it can be put to sleep or am I missing something here.

I am asking because I travel to the uk a bit and have a dog that some stupid cop might think is a pitbull but is not.

I disagree. There are strong signs that, unlike here, the UK government are listening to welfare groups & it's good to see the word "welfare" as well as "control" in the title of the Bill.

It would be brilliant if compulsory microchipping is introduced especially as this bill will precede our own AWB & it might increase the pressure to introduce it here.

If you own a breed that is banned in the UK then you cannot bring that dog into the country. In my experience the general attitude of the UK police towards dogs is excellent.

you actually can for competition but you need a special time limited exemption license.

Can you provide a link to this as I have never heard of it & I can't think of a competition where banned dogs compete ?

The UK DEFRA site is very clear & makes no mention of exemptions:

"In Great Britain, it is illegal to possess certain types of dogs. If you bring one of these dogs into Great Britain, you could be prosecuted and the dog seized and destroyed. If in doubt, don’t travel with it."

i havent got a link but there have been a couple of pbt allowed in for weight pulls AFAIK. i'll have a search around for info but as i said a special time limited license is needed. not sure what part of uk either.

EDIT: my balls up! it was a london in some state in america. i shall now go and hide my head down the side of the couch!
