Hey, on a year out after school atm, and I'm thinking of doing Hospitality in CIT next year!

Is it a good course? Do you do much cookery etc in it? And is CIT a good college? I'd be moving up from Waterford!

    Thanks!

Hi, im studying Hospitality Management in CIT and i love it.

You d cooking every second Monday from 10 until 1 and on the other Monday you do service from 11.30 to 2.30.

Its a hard course and there very tough on attendance but the facilities are top class and the lecturers are sound out.

I do recommend you get some insight into the industry and understand what dedication is required.

Before i began my course i went into the college and took a walk around the hospitality building (cit have a dedicated building for that department) and i was amazed at the facilities for chefs and tourism etc.

If you need anymore help give a shout.

    Thanks Hartyk, that's great advice!

Yeah I know hospitality is definitely what I want to do, I've always had an interest in it and when I went to college last year I realised courses like arts and science weren't for me, I wanted something different!

I'll get in contact with the department and ask about the facilities there too, thanks for that tip! :)

Do you continue cooking after first year or is it just in first?

Also, if anyone knows, is the work experience in the summer of first year paid or voluntary?

hii im also studying hospitality management in CIT at the moment...iv loved every minute and got an incredible placement in first year that was paid by the hour...with all the tax reclaimable,,,,i would highly recommend the course and while some modules are tricky its overall a good course and a good college....on a side note you cant beat the nights out in cork city either!

Anyone know if there's a downside with the course only being a Level 7 and having only 12 weeks work experience compared to a full year in the level 8s offered elsewhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 139 ✭✭Hartyk87

Im studying the level 8 and currently doing the 12 week work experience at the min.

I recommend the the level 7 as there is a huge amount of hand on practicals in the college and the facilities are 2nd to none with a brand new specific building for this in CIT.

Imo 12 weeks is ample time for experience as you will be placed with a mentor in the hotel and you will learn all u need to know.

There is no Level 8 direct application in CIT though, I'm torn between the CIT and GMIT course as GMIT has a full year of work experience but it's so far away

Well, Hospitality Management is not about cooking only, its about managing things every dept. of hospitality need an manager and it depends on you in which part you want to work like there is an manager for food section, cleaning, customer support, customer service, travel, and casino etc. there are more than 25 departments beyond cooking. Regarding college, every college is good and gives you best services it depends on you how much you how much you are serious about your career. BEST OF LUCK

Hi, I'm hoping to do Hospitality Mangement in September in CIT.

What are the hours like? Any days off/half days?
    What are the exams like?
Do you have to find your own placement or is it provided?
    Is it an enjoyable course?
How many students are in a class? 20? 40? 60+?

    Thanks :)

I just finished 1st year this year in the course, its a great course. If you have any bit of hotel experience at all it would be a huge benefit. Hours are generally 9-4/5 most days, half days on Fridays tho. Exams are grand, most of the marks come from attendance and assignments, there's no real big exam at the end. They find paid placement for you, everyone gets a good placement. This year we started with 44 in our class but there was only a consistent 30. :)

Hi lads, I'm trying to find out some first hand information about the Hospiality Management course in CIT.

I have it down on first on my CAO, it looks like an interesting course by the course description but I'd like to find out some past student opinions etc.

I did a BBS degree years ago.

I am now thinking of doing hospitality.

Would doing the 2 year course be an option for me?

  • Registered Users Posts: 40 ReemAddict

I think students have an option to complete second years and leave with a higher certificate or progress to third year. Double check the CIT website or Qualifax.ie :)

As a career changer - would the cert in hospitality be a good choice?

For the sake of one more year you'd be better of doing the 3 years for your degree. In 3rd year you go out in placement anyway in April :)

Being to college already so funding may be a bit of an obstacle.

Anyone any experience of the hospitality cert?

I'm currently in my last semester of 2nd year so I get my cert this summer, I can't imagine the cert doing anything for me. All the jobs in the industry are more or less who you know now a days.
