@media101. Paperwork can be tricky like it what you put down has to match up when cross checked and it more a worry to some because if you make a mitake then by the time you may not get visa due to them being gone.

@ManFromCheese. Yes he said it's very hard and you'd have to be extremely lucky to walk straight in to a top job. You start at bottom and network around. Canadians like to try keep big jobs Canadian when possible and secondly Canadians aren't like Irish regards interviews etc like you could be waiting 2 months before you hear back from result of interview but big thing in getting jobs is networking.

    Just a suggestion,
Try doing a search on Craigslist, see if there's much happening in the area you are specialising in.Click into a place that you think you might end up going to, then click into "Jobs" then search and see what comes up.

No what I saying is most of those type jobs are slow process or you have to get out and meet people and make yourself known. Like I think a big part of their culture is "wine & dine" with people etc. it but different than here where you pass in CV and hope for best

Are you guys getting medical certs? I rang up a certified physician in Dublin as recommended on the Canadian immigration website to book an appointment. They ‘re charging me 300e for a medical which is a complete rip off. Is this required or not because I don’t want to blow that kind of cash especially when the majority of the fee is going straight into the back pocket of an over-paid doctor???

Nope, I didn't get one last year and the current information on the site is as follows:

    Medical Examination and Insurance

Do I need a medical examination? Can you send me a list of designated medical practitioners?

A medical examination is not generally required of persons residing in Ireland. However, persons residing in Ireland who are destined for occupations for which the protection of public health is essential must pass a medical examination. This includes working in hospitals or healthcare facilities, and working with children such as teachers and care providers. Food handlers are not included in this group and a medical examination would therefore not usually be required.

Unless you're going to be working in any of the following fields listed in the attachment. That form is from 2012.

No medical needed unless your working in specified professions

Hello there Just a quick question..
1 I have my first IEC visa to be activated by june 2013
Would anyone recomend applying now for the second IEC thinking ill get it round march - june 2013 and to be activated by june 2014
2 Or apply in 2014 jan and hope to get it by june 2014
    Any info would be great
also if I go june 2013 on the 1st visa and have the second visa also. does that mean i am good till 2016???
    Thanks Again

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭RootsCanada

Your June 2013 will get you up to June 2014 if it was issued last year.

Only visas issues this year will get the 2 year run, as this was just approved pre Christmas, so your visa is from the 2012 batch, good for one year.

You don't need one until 2014, apply in Jan, you'll have it by March, but won't need to activate it until after June 2014.
    So you're good, LUCKY YOU!

As others have said, unless you plan on working in the listed professions I wouldn't bother spending money on the cert, you can use it for something else.

I am qualified over here to work with kids, but I have decided I don't want to get the medical cert (cos right now I don't think the results would be stellar, but by the time I get over there they will be) so I am just not gonna be looking to work with kids

    @gintonious

Nothing else you can do until they open up.
They are saying the application will be different to previous years, so you could be on a wild goose chase, doing things that people had to do last year.

It's just a frustrating waiting game now.

Guys, I was looking at doing the IEC with USIT. Was just going over the details on their website. Am I right in reading you have to purchase insurance seperately (it's not in the 299 outlay) and for one year it's 299 euro? (499 for 2 years).

Here at backpackers insurance its 286 euro for 2 years

what is the turn around time for the Garda Cert?
My local station has told me it will take 3 weeks.. But last time I got one I had it in less than a week..

  • Registered Users Posts: 218 ✭✭Muffinman1

You'll prob have it between 7-10 days. They say 3 weeks to cover max amount of time it may take. But at looks of things you won't be in any rush

    Hi there,

    Actually, that's a good question.
All we know right now is, that visas issued in 2013 are valid for two yrs.
We don't know the criteria for next yr yet. So if you wanted to be sure, to be sure, apply this year but you won't activate it until next yr.
The only thing is, it probably won't change and it'll mean you'll be getting your visa a year before you need to use it, which potentially puts one of us out of the running.

    Just a thought.

I know it's early stages yet but I've been looking at apartments for rent in Calgary in the SW & SE inner city regions just to get familiar with things. What would you say is typically a good price for an apartment? So far I've been searching in the maximum price range of $800 p/m, is that enough?

Get your applications in early and noone will be out of the running, the visas are there for the people who get them first, if it where me I'd be applying for my 2nd run ASAP, I know people currently sitting at home in Ireland who have done a year in Canada and are have had to go home and are waiting to come back over, with jobs etc waiting!

Only from people I know there I think $1000 is average but depends on area too like downtown is most expensive and is where all bankers etc are but Calgary is well spread too with fine transport so I suppose it balance of price vs travel etc

    Hey Guys,

Have a buddy who is Canadian and works in immigration over in Canada. .

Did your mate mention anything about processing times? As in, would they be shorter this year since IEC has been revamped with a new processing system?

Your looking at around 1000 p/m for a 1 bed apartment which will include heating, don't take the availability of apartments on rentfaster.ca or similar sites too seriously, when you put in the phone call they'll say they've nothing available for a month or two, maybe more. Finding a place here is seriously competitive and forget getting one without a job unless you'll put a couple of months rent upfront. You'll be gunning for the apartment like everyone else and whoever seems like the safest bet will get the place.

Hey Will he didn't give an exact timeline as it's all going through new system but I think they are expecting it to be around 8 weeks.

I've seen a couple of posts already on CV's but does anyone have a sample one?? I'm currently searching the internet for a template to work from as I know it's meant to be more detailed and truthful than the one I have at the moment... and completely in chronological order.

    Cheers!

I have my proper CV for jobs when I'm over there but it's just this 100% truthful one for the Visa that has me worried... blargh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭RootsCanada

    Well I don't know really.
I think a lot of scare mongering goes on with this process.
Last year, I did everything to a T.
When I landed in Toronto, I had my insurance, my bank statements, my CV, my accommodation details, the works.
I asked the girl who was printing off my visa, do you need this, do you want to see that, I have copies of this, that and the other, and she said, ''nah''.
Now, I'm not for a second saying, don't get the stuff, but I turned myself inside out to meet these requirements and honestly, all I needed was that letter.

Try not to stress it unnecessarily.
Just wait until the site goes live, all the details will be there on what we need to do. There's no point trying to second guess the process or requirements just now.

Once it's open, we'll all be studying it and helping each other out here, so hold tough for now.

Yeah, I know you're right. Patience isn't my strong point. I have a CV done now and all the other ****e ready to go so that's all I can do for now! C'moooon IEC!!
