Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Guys,

Is it possible to buy a 250cc bike and restricted it to 125cc until I pass my Licence.

I want to drive and practice, not rent a bike. But it would make sense to buy a better bike and then unrestricted it than just selling my 125cc bike.

i am going to say no as its the capacity of the engine, nothing to do with a restriction...

Why does it need to be 125?

Assuming you're over 18 you should have an A permit. This restricts you to 33bhp but does not restrict based on capacity of bike.

Most 250's come in under 33 anyways.

I am 35 and drive used to drive 125cc scooter.

My understanding is, I have a A1 up to 11kw full Irish licence.

    Are you saying I can drive a 250cc up to 33bhp ?

What exactly does your licence say? There are 3 sections which may have dates in them. If you have valid dates in the "a" restricted section then it applies. If you only have dates in the "a1" section then you need to apply for a provisional a learning permit.

It seems you currently have a full A1 licence so are entitled to ride any bike up to 125cc or 11kw.

If you go out and get an A learner permit you can ride anything up to 33bhp regardless of the engine capacity. You may need to do a Theory Test and initial basic training.
