Cork handicap strolls in and Shels e/w comes in too!

I fancy Galway to get promoted in the Playoffs and fancy Pats to beat Derry in the final, may have write ups.

Never updated on this, Galway got promoted and Pats won the FAI Cup. Spot on!

League of Ireland Outright Bets will be up this week, waiting on Paddy Power to get their finger out and get the odds up for Handicap Outright (which have won the last two years running at 8/1 and 15/2).

    League of Ireland Outright Bets

Myself and the lads in the Irish Football Betting Facebook group have all discussed the below bets and opinions. Been mulling over these for weeks while Paddy Power got their act together. There’s not straight outright bet this year, instead just a handicap one. Cork to win outright along with Sligo on the handicap was our potential bets up until PP gave lines, we were hoping for +18 on Sligo but they were only +10. We’ve opted to go with Cork +6 over a straight outright. Limerick to be relegated was another bet we wanted, but when odds came out at 5/2 we agreed it was too short for us. Cobh EW would be worth a tiny stake in the First Division, going to be a tight League this season but they may sneak up given the quality they’ve signed in midfield and their usual good home record.

Cork City +6 points @ 9/1 (Paddy Power)

Last 2 season (Dundalk and Cork respectively) the Outright Handicap bet has won at 8/1, hopefully make it 3 this season.

Cork City have made the most of the close season sign several useful and skilled players most notably ex Ireland international Liam Miller and ex-player Alan Bennett (AFC Wimbledon) and Alan Smith. Karl Sheppard (Shamrock Rovers), Gavan Holohan (Drogheda United), Kieran Djilali (Limerick FC) and Alan Smith (Rangers) have all signed up giving Cork City some great depth within their squad. A few players left but only one was a major loss and that was Gearóid Morrissey who signed for Cambridge Utd. Gavan Holohan was Drogheda best player by far last year, similar player to Gearoid Morrisey. That will help cover his loss, as will signing Miller who again has senior caps, Champions league and premier league football. The depth they have at their disposable this season is what we believe will get them over the finish line this season with the trophy in hand.

    A few points on this Cork City side;
10 of their 23 have won the league previously which will surely give them the needed experience to get over the line this season
They had the most clean sheets in the League last year, they've lost nobody defensively but added Alan Bennett to the defence who has previously won leagues and cups as well as senior Irish caps,
4 out of our 5 strikers are proven Premier division goalscorers, Karl Sheppard, John O’ Flynn, Mark O’Sullivan, and Danny Morrissey.
Once Cork start off well in the League and keep their momentum going, Turners Cross will become a fortress for them with big crowds and will be key in their title challenge again!

Dundalk, St. Pats and Shamrock Rovers look to be their biggest and possibly only title contenders.

Dundalk let a good few go but made some good replacements, Gary Rogers (Sligo) and Ronan Finn (Shamrock Rovers) being the big two, Richie Towell staying on was a huge boost for them as he looked all but likely to sign for an English side. Dundalk’s main concern this season will be scoring, Pat Hoban who racked up 20 goals last season has moved to Oxford and no striking replacement has been brought in so they’ll be banking on a lot of goals from their attacking midfielders. This is far from ideal.

St. Pats had a difficult enough League season and never really looked like challenging from the off, but they had a successful FAI Cup campaign. Liam Buckley will look to challenge in the League from the start this season! On paper they haven’t made any changes to their squad which will make them stronger; Ciaran Kilduff, Jason McGuinness and young goalkeeper Conor O’Malley have all signed from Shamrock Rovers while youngster Lee Desmond signed from Shelbourne. The big news for Pats was Keith Fahey moving to Rovers which is a big loss for them.

Shamrock Rovers will hope to improve on their poor season last season and aim higher than 4th. They’ve made a few big signings which is making them looking strong on paper. Keith Fahey (St Pats), Danny North (Sligo Rovers), Gavin Brennan (Drogheda Utd), David Webster (Bray Wndrs), Brandon Miele (Bluebell) and Mikey Drennan (Aston Villa). A few unknown quantities but potential.

On paper Cork and Dundalk look the strongest again this year but Cork have the depth while Dundalk could struggle on front of goal. Cork will be wounded from their final game of the season loss to Dundalk and losing out on the title. 9/1 looks a great price on the handicap, we did discuss Cork Outright at 5/1 but felt the handicap was a better bet!

Dinny Corcoran Top Goalscorer Each Way @ 16/1 (Paddy Power)

Owen Heary has made his mark so far with Sligo and will thrive on this challenge. Heary will have his side match fit with no less than 6 friendlies this pre-season, 5 of which have been played. 5 wins from 5 friendlies, granted against some non-League opposition and 1st Division sides but they’ve supposedly played some good football, scored a lot of goals and managed to impress. 32 goals scored and just 3 conceded.

Heary had the pick of the crop from Bohs when he left close season, with this he brought over 4 players. Kevin Devaney, Steven Beattie, Dinny Corcoran and Eoin Wearen. All 4 featured a lot for Bohs last season with Corcoran being their top goalscorer and Wearen was hotly tipped to make a return to England over the close season with Sheffield Utd being the most likely destination but he chose to stay in Ireland.

Sligo, who we fancy to have a decent season this year, in an attacking sense anyway, have scored 33 goals in preseason with Dinny chipping in with 9 of them. Alan seen Sligo play against Waterford Utd, Dinny seems to be the main striker, and with two quick lively wingers in Puri and Wearen and the creativity of Keith Ward. We feel he could be laid on enough times to get into a paying position of top 4 goalscorers. Last season Dinny notched 13 League goals for a struggling Bohs side, he was 5th highest scorer in the League (two of the higher placed have since signed across the water), so in an attacking side like Sligo we'd expect him to continue and possibly better that tally this season. Dinny will be playing under a manager who gets the best out of him, last year under Heary was his career best tally. Possibility Dinny may be the penalty taker as well on occasions.

Dundalk, Rovers and Cork have no real poacher up front and will see goals coming from everywhere. Pats have Fagan but we can see more from the midfield coming this season.

    ***League of Ireland Bets***

Week One!! Myself, and the lads from the Irish Football Betting group on Facebook have all agreed on a few bets. First week so hopefully teams don't act the b*llocks! Keeping it short and sweet this week.

    Dundalk -v- Longford - Friday 7.45pm
Newly promoted Longford have one of the hardest possible starts to a season, having to travel to Oriel Park to take on last seasons Champions. Dundalk look like challengers again this season while Longford look like strugglers.

    Dundalk -1 Asian @ 1.80 (MarathonBet/Pinnacle) - LARGE

Shamrock Rovers -v- St. Pats - Friday 7.45pm (Live on RTE2)
TV matches are always a bad affair for goals, but this looks like a good bet. Gavin Brennan, Ryan Brennan, Keith Fahey, Stephen McPhail and Barry Murphy are all out for Rovers while Killian Brennan and Sean Hoare for Pats are all suspended. Murphy being out is a big loss in goal for Rovers so we fancy Pats to score. Rovers should score at home!

Both Teams To Score @ EVENS (Betway/Betfair) - MEDIUM

Sligo Rovers -v- Cork City - Saturday 7.45pm
Sligo have been goal machines over the pre-season, while Cork haven't been great they should switch on once the whistle goes.

    Over 2.5 Goals @ 11/10 (General) - MEDIUM

    Cobh Ramblers -v- UCD - Saturday 7.45pm
Cobh solid at home normally, and they've a decent midfield this season along with a few other good players. At 11/5 they're worth an interest stake.

Cobh win @ 11/5 (General) - VALUE STAKE

    Other Friday matches:
    Galway -v- Derry City - 7.45pm
    Galway could be value
    Cabinteely -v- Wexford - 7.45pm
Possible sell out here for Cabinteelys first match, possible +1
    Waterford Utd -v- Athlone - 7.45pm
    Athlone should win here
    Shelbourne -v- Finn Harps - 8pm
Shels missing a few, but Harps have their manager and assistant susp.

    Other Saturday matches:
    Bray -v- Drogheda Utd - 5.45pm
    No bet
    Limerick -v- Bohs
Limerick in turmoil over the close season, odds have shortened on Bohs so no bet now

From next week I can see Cabinteely becoming the whipping boys of the League. Cabinteelys make shift team with players comprising of little experience. Tomorrow it's an expected sell out, seems to be a lot of hype, etc... Wouldn't be betting against that this week.

Happy with that cabinteely result. I'll be betting against them next week. Small poor pitch ,windy night, big crowd all in their favour tonight. Should be a different story against Harps away next wk.

No "advised" bets, but Drogheda tonight could be a good bet, we're without possibly 6 first teamers due to injury, will be fielding a weakened side.

    ***League of Ireland Bets***

Week One was a bad one, this week hopefully things pan out how they should! Me and the lads in the Irish Football Betting Facebook group have picked the following. They'll be updates posted direct from the Cork, Wexford and Bohs matches in the group (I won't be making the Shels match - part timer w*nker)

    Cork City -v- Limerick - Friday 7.45pm
Corks first home match of the season and a Munster derby should see a bumper crowd in Turners Cross. Cork nearly started their title challenge off with a loss to Sligo but managed to bag a draw in the closing minutes of the game. Limerick in turmoil over the close season and lost to Bohs in their first game 3-0, Limerick also fielded a practically first team side in their League Cup game on Tuesday which went to extra-time. Corks side on paper looks the best in the League, blending the new players in will be key to their title challenge. Cork most likely won't concede against Limerick so it's all about how many times they can find the net! No major issues with players out:
Cork - Rob Lehane (groin), Alan Smith (back) and Michael McSweeney (hamstring) all look set to miss out, but Cork will welcome Billy Dennehy back from suspension for the game.
Limerick - Defensive duo Paudie O’Connor and Robbie Williams return to the squad having been rested on Tuesday but left-back Colm Murphy (hamstring) remains out.

    Cork -1.25 Asian @ 1.90 (General) - LARGE

    St. Pats -v- Bray - Friday - 7.45pm
Pats will be looking to get to winning ways after a defeat in the opener to Shamrock Rovers while Bray are coming off the back of being knocked out of the League Cup by non-League side Crumlin in a 4-2 defeat and a league loss to Drogheda. Bray did field a weak side against Crumlin.
Team news: St. Pats - skipper Ger O"Brien and centre half Jason McGuinness will miss out with hamstring injuries. Both Sean Hoare and Killian Brennan back into the fold after their respective one match bans, while new signing Morgan Langley from the Harrisburg City Islanders in America is available for selection.

    St. Pats @ -1 normal @ 7/10 (Ladbrokes) - MEDIUM

    Drogheda -v- Sligo Rovers - Friday 7.45pm
Drogheda started with a win away to Bray but lost on Tuesday night to Shelbourne in the League Cup, while Sligo were unlucky not to beat Cork in their opener. No major injury news aside from Sligos first team keeper being out but Coulter is a good replacement. Sligo should win here, Drogs team on paper is extremely poor.

    Sligo win @ 4/5 (Boylesports) - MEDIUM

    Other Friday matches:
    Bohs -v- Galway
    Bohs a decent price

    Derry -v- Dundalk
Dundalk seemed to lack the final finish in their opener against Longford, in a game that finished 1-0 which supposedly should have been 4+, once they start scoring they'll be tipped. Derry missing a few again.

    Athlone -v- Cobh
Word midweek of possible money issues in Athlone already. Aside from that Cobh would be worth a small bet at nearly 6s.

    UCD -v- Shels
Shels could be without 7 first teamers, UCD at 2/1 could be a great bet. Possible unders too

    Finn Harps -v- Cabinteely
Can only get 11/2 this week on Cabinteely, I was at Shels -v- Harps week and Harps don't look up to anything apart from hacking. Didn't look like scoring. Cabinteely win a bit of value. Unders looks good.

    Wexford -v- Waterford
Wexford are dire odds, no reason to be priced like this. Their top goalscorer last season could still be out injured. They've lost their League opener to Cabinteely and in the League Cup midweek to non-League UCC. Waterford Double Chance.

    Saturday matches:
    Longford -v- Shamrock Rovers
    No bet

    Cork goals over 1.5 8/15
St Pats goals over 1.5 2/5

    Single
    St Pats v Bray
    Christy Fagan anytime 10/11
Saints striker Christy Fagan has a fantastic record playing against Bray, with the PFAI Player Of The Year scoring eight goals in his previous nine outings against the Seagulls.

    ***League of Ireland Bets***
Write up courtesy this week of one of the other lads in the Facebook group, Graeme.
Week Two was a good one, myself and the lads are hoping to keep things going. Tough set of fixtures this week mind you! Keeping it short and sweet.

    Bray Wanderers -v- Bohemians - Saturday 5.45pm

Bray are a poor side, Lost both their games so far and will be near the bottom all season, Away at St Pats and at home to Drogheda. Bohs have picked up two wins from 2 away at Limerick and at home to Galway. They're a well organised and well drilled side and are more than capable of winning this game. No team news as of yet but Aidan will update post when made available.
    Bohs win @ 20/21(Boyles/PP) - MEDIUM

    Galway United -v- Drogheda - Friday 7.45pm

Newly promoted Galway have started the campaign with 2 defeats from two games, Losing at home to Derry and away at Bohemians. They're a young squad with not much premier division experience so confidence is sure to be hit after back to back defeats.
Drogheda on the other hand are off to a great start in the league with wins away at Bray Wanderers as well as at home to a much fancied Sligo team(Who we actually tipped up last week). Daryl Kavanagh has proven to be an inspired signing for Drogs with 2 goals in 2 for them.
We believe that Droghedas good form will continue in this game and at 2/1 represent cracking value.
    Drogheda win @ 2/1 (Bet365) - SMALL

    Limerick -v- Longford - Saturday 6.30pm

This is short and sweet, Limerick are dire, Beyond **** even. Graeme watched them play in Turners Cross last week and said it was the most one sided game he's seen in awhile. It was 5-0 and could have ended 7 or 8. Shane Duggan was sent off in that game and will miss this.
Longford have lost both games so far but these came against last seasons champions and Shamrock Rovers. They proved away at Dundalk that they can make the step up as they stuck with them all game, Going down 1-0 in the end.
Longford win @ EVENS (General) - SMALL

    Cobh -v- Wexford - Saturday 7.45pm

This is a game which looks like it is priced up only on last years league table. Cobh have strengthened their squad over the course of the off season signing a number of players with premier division experience. They are tough to beat at home.
Both sides are off to poor starts with Cobh losing to both UCD and Athlone and Wexford losing to new boys Cabinteely and also to Waterford. Cobh double chance at even money represents very good value here.
Cobh Double Chance @ EVENS (General) - SMALL
    Cobh win @ 15/4 (Bet365) - VALUE

Few other matches over the weekend, Shels would have been a bet but the pitch that Cabinteely play on was woeful 2 weeks ago and there's been several rugby matches on it since too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 311 ✭✭robjones1981

    Good Stuff

I might go for overs on the Cobh Wexford game myself - but I agree the double chance at that price is good value I think

Bohs are missing Dan Byrne and Dave Mulcahy . Bray not sure but Cassidy was missing last week and Adam Hanlon has not played this season - although he may well have left the club - Im not sure

Drogheda have made a great start - but its a surprising start. Galway may not be the team to beat them at the moment - but would be very surprised if Drogs finished any higher than 7th come the end of the season

Rovers Cork could be a cracker. Rovers may well struggle with Cork's direct style of play - none of their centre backs are commanding enough . Billy Dennehy was in top form last week v Limerick, playing on both the left and the right - he has the ability to cause Luke Byrne no end of problems and on the other side will get at Madden too, and prevent him from getting forward as much as usual.

Longford were a little fortunate to just concede one vs Dundalk and Rovers could have easily have had two or three more against them last weekend. I think they will struggle at the back this season, some real weak links at the back on their left hand side (Tyrell/Powell), but not sure if Limerick are going to be able to take advantage of that. Pressure is on Longford a little bit, even so early in the season

Bohs the only winner this week! Premier matches on Tuesday and a couple of nice fixtures!

  • Registered Users Posts: 165 ✭✭salmon1

I see Galway are missing quiet a few for cork tomorrow,Galway also played a large portion of the game with 10 men which they surely will feel the effects after only a 3 day turn around.

" Galway United manager Tommy Dunne has a number of injury and suspension concerns ahead of Tuesday’s match against Cork City.

Long term injury victims Kilian Cantwell (knee) and Ger Hanley (achilles) are both still unavailable for selection.

Enda Curran has not recovered from a calf strain he sustained in Friday’s 1-0 win against Drogheda United at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Left back Marc Ludden is ruled out with a knee injury.

Sam Oji will miss the game through suspension after being sent off against Drogheda United.

Colm Horgan is rated as doubtful with the flu. "

    I fancy cork -1 handicap 21/20

    ***League of Ireland Bets***

A midweek set of Premier fixtures on Tuesday! Weekends bets weren't great with just the Medium bet winning but it's the opening couple of weeks still!

    Cork City -v- Galway - Tuesday 7.45pm
Cork have started decent, they've held Shamrock Rovers to a draw in Tallaght and demolished Limerick 5-0 in Turners Cross. Along with snatching a 1-1 away to Sligo. New boys Galway managed a win on Friday but lost their previous two.
Team news is the vital information in this match, Galway United manager Tommy Dunne has a number of injury and suspension concerns.Long term injury victims Kilian Cantwell (knee) and Ger Hanley (achilles) are both still unavailable for selection. Left back Marc Ludden is ruled out with a knee injury. Key striker and goalscorer from Friday Enda Curran has not recovered from a calf strain while Galways best defender Sam Oji will miss the game through suspension after being sent off against Drogheda United. Colm Horgan is rated as doubtful with the flu.
Add to these injuries, the fact that Galway played 65 minutes of the match on Friday with just 10 men.

    Cork City -1.25 Asian @ 1.95 (General) - LARGE

    Drogheda -v- Limerick - Thursday 7.45pm
Keeping this short and sweet, we all know the troubles of Limerick at this stage. Drogheda at home should win here, they ideally should cover the handicap! They're a better side, which isn't saying much to a poor Limerick side. Limerick have also banned 30 supporters who we think would normally be the majority of their travelling support so expect no motivation from the away crowd!
Drogheda have several injury doubts going into the game with Cathal Brady (hip), Alan Byrne (quad), Mick Daly (calf) and Daryl Kavanagh (flu) all to be assessed at training tonight. Kavanagh is expected to return and should get on the scoresheet!
Limerick are again without captain Shane Duggan who must serve an additional one-match ban following his recent red card in Cork. Right-back Seán Harding is also doubtful but on the plus side left-back Colm Murphy has resumed light training following a hamstring injury.

    Drogheda -0.75 Asian @ 1.95 (General) - MEDIUM

Bohs/Dundalk - Tough match for Dundalk, no bet
Sligo/Shamrock Rovers - Rovers DNB was a bet but a couple of injuries turned us off it
Pats/Derry - Pats with just 3 fit defenders, BTTS could be good.
Longford/Bray - Bray could be overpriced here at nearly 5/1

Fully expect Cork to beat us, but if Horgan makes it then Oji is the only major loss as we would likely have played just one up front anyway. Might be worth backing centre halves for Cork too as we are poor enough on set pieces. Drogs were awful against us on Friday too, played one up top against ten men for 65 minutes and were toothless, if theyve Kavanagh back then they have some chance alright.

I know they may have a couple of injuries but Shams look a fair price to me at 6 to 4 . Sligo have only 2 points from 9 and look to be struggling . Cork parked the bus Friday and frustrated rovers but I think with Sligo being at home they will take the game to them and that might suit shamrock rovers

The only injury that I am aware of is Luke Byrne and there are a few players capable of covering left back. Fahey and Drennan came off with cramp on Friday so nothing major and North has trained this week or have i missed something here?

That 6/4 looks over priced a bit all right . Annoyed I didn't do it myself earlier . The Shamrock Rovers V Cork City match was a lot more even than certain media reported . Heard from a few at it that it was even enough . I went for a Drogs / Cork City double .

I like the look of the enhanced paddy power treble of Dundalk/cork/Drogheda at 4/1. Dundalk the risky one but I don't think bohs are as good as their early season form suggests.

Bray away to Longford are great value IMO, did them at 6.2 on the exhange. Bray for me have a superior squad.

Drogheda ht/ft and cork -2 my other bets.

Now if i only followed my own advice, we conceded from two set pieces with one of the Cork cb's scoring and Drogs are just poor.

so the teams played on Tuesday and will play again on Friday?? surely fatigue will come into play for some teams?

Friday/Tuesday/Friday for some, early in the season though.
