    hello there,

my father is freaking out a bit about this new septic tank charge thing coming along, and needs somebody to check out his septic tank to see how badly it is set up.

Is there anybody out there who knows of any reputable independent consultants who would be able to give it the one over and make some recommendations?

The house is in the meath/westmeath area...

    Cheers,

    Tom

Not sure about Meath/Westmeath but some councils have an approved list of independent "site assessors". You could look online at their planning section or maybe give them a ring.

I would wait untill the system is up and running and people know what improvements will need to be made, theres no information on what improvements will be required as far as I know yet, your father may end up spending more than he needs to if he does it now and he may loose out on possible grants. If he "improves" his septic tank or percolation now he may require planing where as it may be exepmted if he is instructed to do works by the council assessors. If he is worried start putting some money aside for it now.

As with all things new you are right to be wary as to who you get in to look at your system. Muffler and No6 are both giving good advice.

Since Christmas in my area I've noticed a few vans with "septic tank specialist" type advertising on them that were never to be seen previously. I can't blame lads for trying to make a living but I'd get references for previous work before I'd get anyone in.

Another option is to get a few of them to look at what's there, what they'd recommend and of course a quotation for the work to be done. Then you'll have a fair idea how you're fixed. But as No6 advises I'd be inclined to do nothing for now but prepare for the contingency of having to do something.
