    hi
i have to create a basic website, and im looking for free website editors.
ive downloaded a few, and a lot of them are
    (1) not free
    (2) not very good.

can anyone recommend me one, thats free, and works with HTML straight away. ive downloaded a few that have thier own formats, and wont open a html template.

    thanks.

    found pagebreeze, does the job..

I have used Pagebreeze, and it works but it has similar downsides to all other web design software: it throws in a lot of crap you don't want.
Easily the best way to do things, is to write it by hand. When you want to see what the result looks like, you open the file in a browser. I tend to use wordpad as it never adds stuff whereas more extensive text editors like Word or Open Office want to throw in their own ideas.

pagebreeze proved to be a pain in the ####!
couldnt cope with the € á symbols...

downloaded and installed KompoZer today, works perfectly..

I think you can get a plugin for Firebug that let's you save to the files you're editing in the browser. Might be worth checking out - sorry don't have a name though!

Notepad ++ and a browser with Firebug.

    I personally use Notepad++

However I have been playing around with Adobe's Brackets editor, and I'm impressed. It is still in beta but it's worth checking out.

OP are you going to be using this for a single site or do you plan on developing many sites in the future?

If it's for a once-off then a wysiwyg editor or something like Wordpress would be sufficient with some caveats.

Otherwise, learn html/css properly by using a more text-based editor.

    hi trickyd,
nah, i maintain two basic websites, each updated every couple of week, i know a bit of HTML, i was using pagebreeze, but theres a lot wrong with that program, it often doesnt save your changes, and cant handle the euro or fada's ...

that Kompozer seems to do that job, no complaints with it so far anyway..
