Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

First of all I've already stated that this "beacon of knowledge" of a taxi driver was in California not New York.

Secondly, the fact I have just stated above is just as pedantic as your delightfully insightful sarcasm indulging the obvious fact that he may not the be the pinnacle of authorities on the subject.

It was merely an anecdote to set the scene for my post and maybe also display the man on the streets attitude of a less cynical, self loathing culture

For further more qualified insight on how the US views our predicament I would strongly recommend googling a Vanity Fair article written on our economic woes a while back.

Thirdly, I am aware of the necessity for an EU/IMF bailout and the obligation to pay it back. I support it.
What I am disgusted by is the socialisation of private bonds on the Irish people
Do people even understand whats going on?

Did your American taxi driver know as much about his own country as he did about Ireland. Like what is in this video. See at 15:30 and ask yourself why are the people of Tennessee not out rioting. Have they no backbone?

I think we may have very briefly discussed the pitfalls of capitalism, not really sure though, I was quite drunk at the time.

The taxi driver isn't really the point though... and neither is your argument...

I took a cab when I was in the States over the summer, the driver seemed to know a surprising amount about Irelands economic problems. His unbiased and heartily refreshing view was that "You guys should go tell the E.U. to go F**k themselves"

Why are we lying down and allowing the government be bullied by the ECB into paying the unsecured bonds of a private bank. Bondholders thought to include the likes of Goldman Sachs etc.
The cowardly anti-robin hood of our current government, who lied to get into power, are continuing the unconscionable decisions of the past regime to burden the financial problems of European banks disproportionately on the Irish people. At the end of next month a certain promissory note is due.

People should be marching to ensure that this is not paid.

People should be rioting if it is.

A week in OP...so how's this been going for you? I'm in the city centre of Dublin all day every day and haven't seen much activity. I've my banner painted and my petrol bombs good to go...just waiting on your good self to give the war cry.

the ones that are being hit arent the rioting types. middle class professionals etc hit with more and more taxes who just get on with it (and arent going to take a day off to riot)

Drastically cut welfare and allowances and all hell would break loose.
