Thanks Leeroy. It just seesm strange that we live in buildings but the mgmt. company don't own the rights on cabling or the cabling itself. TBH I'd love to get the residents together and recable it ourselves, if that was legal and not too costly.
As it happens I got pissed off with how slow the Eircom broadband is last night, and sent them a complaint about it.
I might call today and see what they are going to do.

Well.. I ring them regularly too. They're just useless. If there's any way the residents can get this sorted then I'm game.

Call no 64 lodged with Eircom.

I just LOVE that company, not. They ACTUALLY told me I should raise the issue with my local TD. I kid you not. Apparently if you want to get Eircom to do something you have to raise it with your local TD. Such an absolute joke of a company.

I've put a call into CableWatch too. I'm just waiting on a return call. I'm just curious to understand how this whole friggin setup works up here. <snip>

I spoke with a UPC representative today in dundrum and he was telling me that there are a few sites around dublin that have the same issues with rights to ducting being sold off at building time.
He was saying that if everyone in the building signs a petition and hands it to the management company they are obliged to do something about it.

Rang up digiweb, same old story, we are 4km from the exchange in shankhill and so are lucky to get the 4Mb we are getting and I was a bit silly to sign up for the "upto 24Mbit" package when the location of the exchange was public knowledge.

Im considering getting a meteor 4G hotspot for 22 euros a months. The download limit is pretty low, but god Im missing fast responsive internet. I thought I could keep digiweb and download exclusively from it, and use the meteor for everyday browsing, skype etc.

    Thoughts anyone?

Ive an O2 3G dongle, Tullyvale is smack bang in the middle of the highest network point for O2 so were lucky in that respect. I live on top floor facing south east and i get about 6-12 meg download. capped at 15GB per month but as you suggested I use the land line for the heavy stuff and the O2 for the usual stuff. However I will say the reliability of the O2 3G dongle is not always 100%. the strength can fluctuate quite a bit and sometime its noticeable but I got a good offer only 9.99 per month so its handy to have and fills the gaps when i need it to. would love to see what a 4G could do.

Yeah my complaint went nowhere really. I think what Bren o Sullivan said is interesting, petition the mgmt. company.

Hi guys, if a petition is set up I would assist in getting it signed etc. I was going to cancel Eircom altogether but I have decided to stay on in West Courtyard for another year so would like to try and sort out something about this sham "internet"
I would forgo fibre for a half decent internet connection, I mean I get 500kbsec max dl and if 2 devices use the internet together it slow to a snails pace. What a joke.

Anyone have sky broadband. They have offered us 6 months free and considering we have TV with them would save 50 euwo a month on Eircom. But knowing my luck, efibre will be live the week after I switch LOL

  • Registered Users Posts: 592 ✭✭✭Leeroy!

How about we start to organise a petition signed not for the management company but for Eircom to hurry up and finalise the EFibre.
Although with enough names this could serve both management company and Eircom.

For the record if you switch to sky (or any other company for that matter that piggy backs off eircom) your broadband will still come down the telephone line and will be literally the exact same service. I'm out of contract 3 years now waiting for something to happen.

About to move into an apartment in Block K next week. Just wondering if that block also suffers from lack of decent broadband as well ? If so, tell me where i can sign this petition !

I think that K is the Oval, not usre but think you can only get Eircom there.

    Just an update :

the eircom box at the corner there at West Courtyard has a number CW002 written on it onow, that wasnt there last week. Could be marking it for some work to be done? fingers crossed

Hi everyone, we just moved into the oval this week and we have found out about the internet speeds the hard way (haven't signed up to anything yet though).

Is there any provider that can offer even 10mb? What are the best options? Has anyone tried OnWave/QSat for satellite BB?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for doing that. So maybe late September, maybe a bit later.

I would love UPC. Would there be interest on this board to getting a petition to the management company for UPC to come in here? I was thinking, I could put a letter into each postbox with a peel-able sticker where the signature goes. If you want to opt in to the petition, you sign your name and apartment number on the peel-able sticker, and send it back. I then stick each signature onto the petition and approach the management company.

Satellite tends to be slow, regardless of advertised speeds. Downloads can be ok but requests are slow. Its also expensive. A 4G dongle would be better. UPC would be ideal as it would fix two problems, TV and broadband.

A Meteor 4g hotspot should get speeds of 14MBps but there is an 18-20 Gig cap.

I also have a Vodafone 3g mobile WiFi thingy, it's way faster than Eircom - I've tested it @up to 18 meg down and 3 meg up. Not that reliable though.

I have talked to upc over this in the past. They'd come in here if they could but they can't as access to the area is locked down by one provider. It's a monopoly by that single provider. It's amazing that this should be the case in this day and age but there you go. Eircom told me that the only way to resolve it is to get onto our local TD to get Eircom to upgrade us. AMAZING...

That would be totally awesome ;)
Not sure if it would convince them to do something, but it's worth a try imho.

The "lockdown" is only referring to a CATV system, not a phone/voip/stremed media setup. Breaking out of cablewatch <snip> is not something that can be changed by talking to a TD but talking to COMREG and the competition authority. Eircom is basically telling you to get a TD involved as Eircom can't be arsed providing a modern broadband service, never mind a TV over broadband solution. And the TD will pressure Eircom to do something.

When Im back from the states, I'll put something together. If not the management company than COMREG or the Consumer Association as above.

I mean, we live next to the Luas, so why we can only get rural broadband speeds seems ludicrous.

Does anybody actually have Cablewatch broadband?

    Hi all.
I just moved into the Oval.
Do you think Eircom BB is worth a try, while we wait for eFibre?
They're offering Free Upgrade when it will be available (no s***, it's the same price already!)
I wonder if I would have rented this place if I knew..
Thanks to you all, if there's going to be a petition I'll be very interested.
    Chris

If you can't get Digiweb Metro (need line of sight to Three Rock mast) then your only real options are Eircom/ Sky/ Vodafone. All will be the same crappy speed.
If you aren't downloading much a 4G dongle will be much faster. I think they have limits of 15GB a month or something low like that.

Hi all, we are also finding it very difficult to get good Internet!!

Had a UPC guy around the other day all looked to be going well until they actually had to set it up, said they had to get a specialised electrician in...

Was looking a cable watch there and am wondering does think its any good?

Don't suppose there's any point in emailing the management company?
The last I heard is that the company Cablewatch was going to be bought by UPC "any day now". Can't see that happening though.

I wrote to the management company. The long and the short of it is if we are to get another provider in, they will have to go to court.

Cablewatch offer 50Mb broadband on their website. Is anyone in Tullyvale actually getting 50Mb?

Also what does everyone else do regarding TV?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Tea drinker

I'm using cablewatch for TV, and Eircom for phone and broadband. It works out pretty expensive and each one of the services is not good, well the phone is fine but expensive.
I have heard complaints from another development which uses cablewatch for broadband. I'd seriously doubt that a small operator can offer effective broadband like UPC can.
I've emailed Eircom again on the customer complaints email CCM@eircom.ie , probably helpful if all of ye on Eircom do the same.

Personally I hope we get UPC <snip>

Is that comreg? I'll speak to the management agency. Anytime I dealt with them they were very responsive. I'll get all the details and go to com reg my self.

I've been following this thread since the start really, and to be honest, I'm as confused as ever over what's happening. Are we saying that basically this is all Cablewatches fault as they have <snip> control over access to the key broadband switch in Tullyvale or is it Eircom that control that access and don't want to open it up to the competition? I'd love to go complain to the consumer rigths folks (or WHO do we complain to?) if I knew what the fundamental problem was.

Im also a bit confused, but I am 7 months into a 24 month lease and I'll be damned if Im to put up with 4Mbits for broadband - and no cable TV for the next 17 months.

Next to my lift is a panel entitled "Eircom connections", so Eircom have some access. From what I can gather, the for want of a better word, gateway is owned by Cablewatch and cannot be upgraded or configured to allow cable from UPC with out their consent. Eircom eFibre is in the area but Eircom can only provide DSL to the complex.

Tullyvale. <sigh> It is nearly a fantastic complex:

    Pros:
    Secure underground parking - check.
Onsite, residents only gym(niiiice!) - check.
Two minute walk to the Luas - check.
    Attractive grounds - check.
You can see the sea! - check.

    Cons:
Due to either <snip> or poor management decisions, one company monopolises broadband and TV access
A single shop within walking distance - a Spar which knows its the only one within walking distance and takes advantage.
Average size apartments are very poky considering its practically surrounded by green fields.
    No other onsite storage.

    I digress...
