VPS vs. dedicated

Greetings,

I need a server that uses lots of bandwidth, processing power and hard disk space.

I have a company in mind that do a really good offer.

But what's the difference between a VPS with 4GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB hard disk ($49.95 per month) and a dedicated server with single dual-core i3 CPU (2.5GHz), 4GB RAM and 1TB hard disk ($89.95 per month)?

Is there really that big of a jump between a VPS @4GHz and a dedicated server @2x2.5GHz?

You should asked how they raison CPU time on the VPS.
4Ghz maybe the "max" speed but it could be shared with other hosts.


Also the price looks really high, I have a few boxes on Kimsufi and OVH

Something else you might want to consider is that a VPS can give you much better redundancy, scalability and flexibility. If the hosting company have their estate well organised they should be able to offer you 5 9's up time which is most unlikely with a dedicated physical server. If, somewhere down the line you decided you need more RAM, with a VPS it can (in most cases) be done on the fly without interruption of service (platform allowing etc) which also won't be an option with a physical box.

Just some food for thought.

Its very much horses for courses, as mentioned what cloud machines give you is redundancy, scalability and flexibility as well as management tools such as emergency KVM console access and server management functionality that's just not available with dedicated machines.

But dedicated machines do perform better for some applications/functions so its very much a decision based on what you need it to do and what level of performance you require.

The Kimsufi packages look very good.
It's a pity they don't allow more customisation as I would have no need to the 2TB hdd and would love a small SSD instead.

Does anyone know of some good custom built suppliers that might offer similar rates

Thinking about choosing between dedicated server or VPS server?
It is simple decision.
Dedicated servers priced similarly to VPS packages are slower, less flexible, less reliable and simply wrong choice.
When you buy VPS you get dedicated server grade ECC RAM, Raid 10 HDD space, ability to revert to snapshot, make backup of whole system image, latest Quad Core Xeon Nehalem 56xx processor speed, RAID controller with its own memory, and lot more. However, be aware that this is not the case with all windows vps providers. BLAH is completely different, and you can even run benchmarks and see that dedicated servers with similar speed are 3-6 times more expensive, and you also lose all the flexibility VPS hosting offers.
