Whole thing seems kind of pointless. People can still walk into their local Xtra Vision, gives a neighbours or someone they knows name and address and use that to steal all the copywrited stuff they like. Is something going to be done about that?

No they can't, you have to have photo ID and 2 utility bill with your name and address on them.

I actually got a DVD out last night from extrabucks, I haven't been in there in 6 months, I would usually pirate a movie, but not now, I will see the ly of the new land first.

But they wouldn't have been seen to do so, all they would have had to do is call the minister or the Taoseagh and say, we don't like this law it will make doing business in Ireland to difficult and then the law would have been quietly dropped.

But obviously they didn't, that bit I don't understand.

The ISPAI released a statement[PDF] before the law was introduced, criticised his approach to objections* and also suggested it may be in conflict with EU law**.

I'm sure behind the scenes they've been in discussions with various ministers and Blacknight, a member of ISPAI, have been a driving force behind the "Stop SOPA Ireland" campaign.

I'm not sure what else they'd be expected to do. A formal complaint to the ECJ may be in order but I suspect they're hoping it doesn't need to come to that.

    * "ISPAI was very disappointed at the Minister's insistence that he will sign this SI irrespective of proposals for alternative wording and calls from TDs for more full debate on this vital issue."

** "ISPAI welcomes the ruling of the European Court of Justice published yesterday. [...] It also brings in to question what might be achieved by the pending SI."

I can see why the ISPs don't like it, it will mean more costs on them and less income, but Google and Facebook don't seem to give a toss, that I don't understand. Perhaps they know something we don't.

I can't speak for Facebook but Google are represented by ISPAI. They act as their own ISP and ISPAI acts as their lobbying group.

All of ISPAI's releases are indirectly signed by Google and the other members. As ISPAI have been lobbying so have Google (by association).

They may also be bound ISPAI's terms of membership (or whatever it's called) that limits how they can act in these situations (if each member acted on their own accord there'd be little need for ISPAI).

That is all they would have had to say quietly to the government and this would have been stopped in it's tracks, but it seems they didn't and I don't know why.

As for the ISPAI I don't know, but I doubt Google or Facbook would be associated with them. I would say they just represent the ISPs as in internet service providers.

Google is an ISP, and is listed on their members page.

Yeah but if you had a neighbour who already has an account there is NOTHING stopping you going into Xtra Vison and giving his name and address then taking 4 blu rays and never returning them.
I'm sick of how hypocritical that company really is. They get behind this bill, claim it's to stop piracy and copywrited stuff being stolen yet won't do a damn thing about stuff being stolen from their own stores. They should reallly be DEMANDING people present their cards or some form of photo ID whenever anyone rents anything, only commen sense but since they don't people walk in, gives friends and neighbours addresses and steal all the copyrighted stuff they want.
Come on Xtra Vision, lets see you take a stand again't that before getting behind bills like this if you really care about copyrighted stuff being stolen.

You would be caught, the neighbor would get a call asking him for the return of the discs, he would say he never got them, then they would review the cctv footage at the time they lent the discs. You might get away with it if you wore a balaclava or motorbike helmet.

Nope, this never happens. People do it every day and nothing is done about it.

p.s. does this sopa thing have anything to do with a bunch of music videos on youtube suddenly being censored despite being available to watch for months/years?

Probably not, it's hasn't been signed in the US yet.

Hilarious. I'm going to pretend you're actually oblivious to what I mean and reiterate that by "Child pornography" I mean "the engagement of children in pornographic acts, recorded (whether via photographic, videographic, or other means) for distribution on the internet".

Child pornography isn't a matter to joke about, so don't even try to.

Despite this, I do not think the bill is a good thing, as it is too invasive, involving tracking ALL data on the internet, and was proposed by the same man as SOPA and PIPA, and was edited to pretty much encapsulate SOPA when it failed.

Now, either make a constructive comment or fuck right off.

 not cool man, that's starbelgrade yo

Ireland is fully entitled to force Youtube to block certain sites and Youtube is fully capable of complying (they have the ability to restrict videos to or from certain countries).

It wouldn't need to be signed in the US, and it won't be signed in the US (it's an Irish law).

In saying that I wouldn't think that those videos would be blocked as a result (they could be though).

The concept of solidifying the countries stance on copyright law is one thing that perhaps he could have done well but instead he has passed a totally generic law that is completely open for abuse by "copyright holders". Looks like an early end to a political career regardless.

they could have held off on this SI indeed while this consultation was been conducted - given people a chance to effect some sort of appropriate influence on shaping future and more up to date legislation.

    Mod:
    Hello folks.

I've removed some posts containing personal abuse.

Let's not let personal abuse of Mr. Sherlock cheapen our position on how fundamentally wrong and flawed his decision was.

    MOD:
Just to clarify my position and explain the above comment.
I am merely snipping insults because this has been something we do with media figures for a while now. This decision has nothing to do with any laws recently passed and is completely unrelated.

Generally speaking, bash threads and thread filled with abuse get locked. In this instance I see no reason to further censor any criticism of what Sherlock has done other than to simply continue to do what we have been doing for a while now with other similar threads and hot topics.
Direct insults, vague threats etc. have been snipped and removed. Any other criticism is welcomed.

On a personal level I like the idea that boards.ie can point to a few threads where pages and pages of criticism have been posted about a bad decision but where we don't make it easy for anyone to pick up the phone and contact a solicitor and get the whole thing pulled.

So if anyone is wondering about a removed post please PM me. I just wanted to clarify my position and help you to understand why some posts have been removed.
