MTV plans concert for Titanic event

A spectacular open-air concert staged by MTV will headline a three-week festival to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The music channel has announced plans to return to Belfast, the home of the ill-fated liner, to host the gig six months after it held its European Music Awards in the city.

The announcement came as plans for a major £1.5 million Government refurbishment for the dry dock where the White Star Line vessel was built were revealed.

The Thompson Graving Dock in the east of the city is being given a new lease of life after 100 years.

Titanic Sounds will feature several artists staged against the backdrop of the new Titanic Belfast tourist attraction on April 13. It is part of the £2.4 million Titanic Festival commemorating the loss of the liner in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage.

Belfast hosted last year's MTV European Music Awards in November, with top acts including Lady Gaga, Jessie J and Justin Bieber.

An MTV spokesman said more details on the performers booked for the Titanic gig will be announced in the coming weeks.

Organisers of the festival, which will stage 120 events, have also promised the world's biggest ever digital projection lighting show and a public service marking the unveiling of a Titanic Memorial Garden within the grounds of Belfast City Hall.

Belfast's Lord Mayor Niall O Donnghaile said the festival would attract visitors from all over the world.

"This is such an exciting time for our city and this festival reflects the incredible interest in Titanic," he said.

I know since its in Belfast and Snow Patrol are probably expected , but since they only did the EMA's gig would they want them again?

I think you are probably right. And then with Snow Patrol playing the Odyssey a few nights in January. Then potentially playing Tennents Vital in Bangor over the summer. Would be overkill

I don't know who else though?

Just to clarify, Titanic Lockdown is not in conjunction with MTV. It is a music festival being organised and run by a local Belfast music company Hydroponic Music. Here is the link to the website.

Am I the only one who thinks holding a music festival to celebrate the 100 anniversary of 1500 people drowning and freezing to death in the North Atlantic a bit naff? I know Belfast has had a cruddy time over that time period and they're entitled to a bit of something to celebrate the new mood in the city but surely something dignified would be more in keeping with the events they're commemorating? That being said, if they've got Snow Patrol playing, then they could have 1500 more deaths on their hands from those dying of boredom!

    ****, ****, **** lineup. Shameful.

What annoys me is Belfast City Council fund all these MTV concerts basically and then MTV have the cheek to put on crap English and American acts . Why not showcase some of the great local and Irish bands. Hope MTV never come back to Belfast.

Aye, someone who's just sold 20,000 tickets in two sold out arena shows is indeed sh1t. Might not be as big as any of the people at the MTV gig, or something I'd listen to myself, but hardly a ridiculous booking either.

New Order have been confirmed as the headliner at Titanic Lockdown, a new indoor boutique festival taking place in Belfast’s T13 on June 1 and June 2.

The legendary band, formed from the ashes of Joy Division, are busy this summer - after visits to Serbia and Glasgow, they'll hit Hyde Park, where they'll be guest performers at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Mercury nominee Anna Calvi will also perform at the event. The singer played a fantastic show last year in Dublin's Vicar St., showcasing her self-titled debut album.

Already confirmed for the event are Roots Manuva, Gilles Peterson & MC Earl Zinger, Soul Jazz Sound System, Hydroponic Hi Fi, Pocket Billiards, The Bonnevilles, Katie & The Carnival and Tony Wright from ASIWFA’s new outfit Verse Chorus Verse.

Tickets go on general release on Monday April 2 from www.titanic-lockdown.com and all ticketmaster outlets.
