No idea about the details of this photo, but have seen it recently on a few social media sites

Blatant disregard for the life and the yacht in that picture, surely he would have had loads of time to steer clear of the yacht.

Unless she's lending assistance to the yacht?

At first I thought for sure it was photoshopped.

But I found this comment on a FB page about the picture
Okay, before we see more misunderstandings: the vessel Argent Iris heard a mayday close to Gibraltar and tried to help the yacht. There was just one person on board and he was rescued by a helicopter not long after the photo was taken (by the same helicopter). This is no guesswork: I work for Tokyo Marine and have spoken to the Master of the vessel.

The amount of people on the bow looking down at the yacht would lend some credence to it.

Also found this pic on the site - just before I clicked "next" I noticed the IRL sail number :D

I would expect him to "slow down", I would love to see a picture of that bowave hitting the yacht, at that speed he would sail right past him

But shouldn't she be on the windward side of the yacht? To kill the wind and provide shelter.

Irrespective of what the circumstances of that particular photo were, I think this sort of attitude needs to be addressed.

Despite what you might think, yachts, from the bridge of a ship, are not all that visible and can easily be missed. Yachts are not easily noticeabe by eye and tend to return poor echos on radar. Also, despite spending €60k+ on a boat, the majority of "yachtsman" are too tight to invest in AIS. The result being that they're easily missed.

People in yachts, or any small boats for that matter need to cop the **** on. Getting that close to a ship is extremely dangerous for a number of reasons. You can plod on all you like with a half arsed understanding of the rules, but what is not close for you may be too close for the guy on the ships bridge and may well result in him/her taking action to avoid you which may actually aid collision. Ultimately, it's you in the yacht who is more vulnerable, and you in the yacht who'll suffer if things go wrong

Beware of snapshots, they might not give an accurate account.

    What is reasonably established is:
    • The yacht is in distress
    • The ship is rendering assistance

    What's not accurately established:
    • The wind direction. It might not be quite what it seems. It's harder to tell for sure with a tight picture shot/crop. While the yacht appears to be reaching but she's also getting well tossed about and at least one sail (jib) doesn't appear filled and the bow is pointing down. This suggests she's not under much control and is unlikely to have a consistent heading.
    • The sailor who is alone might be panicking and thinking 'get near to the big floating thing asap, any way will do'.
    • The bow wave might make the ship appear to be well under way but it might be stationary (almost) or slow enough to maintain consistent heading.
    • There might be too much sail on the yacht for the situation.
Imho I wouldn't rush to any judgement with regard to any recklessness or otherwise of either party. Not enough is known with any certainty bar the 2 items in the first list.

I suggest we get back to the pron.

This is a maritime patrol vessel built as a prototype by Safehaven Marine in Cork, they normally specialise in pilot boats and support vessels for wind farms etc.

They posted this on their Facebook page earlier today and it's certainly got people talking

No idea, it's off twitter and they didn't say.

Unless there's a "seaman's bar" most places never even know when the crew are ashore.
