What I always find fascinating about the worlds largest/ship/plane etc etc is................the fact that there's a factory or machine bigger than it, somewhere, just to make it. The machine that makes the machine, as it were, is equally fascinating.......

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The crane that was brought in to erect The Spire on O'Connell Street was a far more impressive sight than the spike ever will be!

The mighty tanker Batillus. Built in France in 1977, LOA of 414.22m and a loaded draft of 28.5m. She was doomed due to the collpase of the oil market in the late 70s and early 80s and was scrapped less than a decade later.

Before being sent to the scrap year, she was laid up with here sister ships in a Norwegian fjord.

The ships are the Prairial, Esso Pacific, Esso Atlantic, Esso ???, Batillus and Bellamya.
The combined Gross Tonnage of this 6 ships is approx 1.5 Mill GT, which is more than many national fleets.

I know the amount of ship under water varies with load but the difference in pic 2 and 4 above is amazing and really highlights just how much difference. Nearly looks like it should tip over when unloaded, must be lot harder to control too, like a big sail.

All Steam Turbine driven too...... like the Stena King and Queen. Smooth Steam Turbines......not rattley smelly Diesels!!!!! Although I did have a soft spot for the MAN B&W slow speeds....

Spend four weeks in DP doing ROV or survey work and you may rethink that. From a deck point of view, while it is interesting, tramping around is far more enjoyable

I've done 17 weeks no shore time at all. A 4 week trip with that level of comfort and toys would suit me just fine ;)
