What fuel would that have been burning? Judging by the thrashing at the stern, it was obviously working hard, but it's still looks filthy. Coal? HFO?

foam is due to being so high in the water rather than overworking, no?

I reckon it must be coal to be that filthy. She was probably near the end of her working life at that stage. She is very 'light-ship' so the thrashing is from the propeller churning up the canal water, as it's not fully submerged.

Another one from the archives, 1972 Cod War. This is taken from a British destroyer, trying to keep the Iceland Coastguard vessel from ramming another trawler (and vice versa). High stakes gambling in high latitude waters.

Some cargoes you would always prefer to forget.

Take a big ship like the Northern Dancer:
    showphoto.aspx?photoid=410742

    Fill here with 580,000 x 50kg bags

    Cr60FpTWYAAE7Xo.jpg

And send her to Senegal where with her own cranes

    Cr60I0XXYAAXTZn.jpg

it takes 21 days to discharge the cargo to these lads

Pure hardship, you would think a conveyor belt system on a much larger scale to what builders use to bring blocks and materials up to the first floor when building houses would be the answer for unloading either on the ship or held at port.

    They do exist

    Photo_OneFace_Gypsum%20Centennial_460x197px.jpg

But then that ship is designed to only carry a very limited number of cargo types.

With ships cranes, the ship can carry a much wider selection of cargoes and with proper port handling facilities, can discharge these types of cargo in bulk and not individually bagged.

There's always a sneaking ambition to capture the bobcat and not let it go ashore again after the discharge has finished. Be some craic scooting around with it!

    Cpr7a81WEAAMKr4.jpg

That grab taking it out, 50 tonnes of cargo a scoop!

do they use those bobcats in the ship to scoop out things like grains or other food ingredients?

Any dry bulk cargo; grain, coal, iron ore, etc. That'll be used near the end to arrange the last bits into piles for the grab to scoop up. Then it's down with shovels to clean up the final bits by hand and empty the cargo hold completely. Better to use the ports cranes and equipment to take the crumbs out, than having to haul it out by hand when at sea.

Interestingly & sadly that beautiful vessel was sunk by the Germans in WW2, not far off the Donegal coast.
