In fairness the Strait of Messina is very narrow! 3km wide, and tide flowing, and windy, makes it a hairy enough passage.

German coastguard vessel 'Neuwerk'. A lot of ship for a relatively short bit of coastline!

The coastline may be short, but what it lacks in length, it more than makes up for in difficulty. The tidal flats of the North Sea coast can trap a ship faster than you can react. Believe me, I grew up in Northern Germany, the area around the Elbe Estuary is VERY familiar.

Also, Germany has been aware of the value of a well-equipped fleet since at least the early 1900s :P

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

I’ve never been, but I was reading “Riddle of the sands” last year and you really get the feel for all those low lying sandbars, tidal flats, marshes and fogs. It’s an excellent read despite the jingoism and the sometimes technical nautical jargon.

I read the book also in the last year or so - you're spot on re getting a feel for the area.

Remember all the fuss of the Russian fleet heading through the English Channel? They came back through the other day without much interest, except by the people paid to keep us safe.

Just noticed the cylindrical parking garages in the background with very little sign of crash barriers, it would be raining cars into the street if they tried those over here...
