I've done this job and it's loud, dangerous (the water jet would do you serious damage), wet and dirty. When the cargo is discharged in the hold of a big bulk carrier, it is sometimes necessary to wash everything down so as not to contaminate the next cargo (eg. coal and then iron ore). All of this is done in hot and cold climates while the ship is at sea. Such is the life of Johnny the Sailor!

I googled the Rena as I'd never heard of it - and here's a very interesting article on the mind-boggling consequences of a grounding like this

It happened 10 years ago in Devon and it was a proper treasure ship that shed its load onto the beach as salvage, barrels of wine, BMW motorbikes, Tractors, Playstations, jewellery etc:

Among the valuable items of cargo being carried were 4000 cases of Sauvingn Blanc for Dunnes Stores. My wife who loves the stuff was inconsolable, luckly we managed to convert her to Pinot Grigio.:D

I was lucky to be at a lecture given by one of the head salvagers of the MSC Napoli, at the NMCI a few years ago. Was very interesting, especially the entire process of dismantling the ship. Took more than 2 years for the last piece of the ship to be removed from the Channel.

Impressive - it's size that is. But so bland and lacking in any charisma or charm. It could be one of a 100 similar looking cruise liners in the world today. I'm tempted to post some more pics from the golden age of ocean liners if I could get my blasted upload feature to work on my PC...

It's all about squeezing the most profit out of the limited time she is attractive to the market though, function over form.

I always wonder about the modern cruise ships identical design aswell, can they not even stick a figurehead on the prow or a unique artwork or something to stand out? I suppose the way the industry is booming they just dont care.

Well, look what we passed by when leaving Cartagena harbour last weekend!

They must have stumped up for their outstanding bills and got her sprung :D

(It's even uglier in real life, in a so-bad-it's-almost-good way - I think the dawn light may have helped that impression though!)

You're trying to link to pictures in a Gmail account, only the person with access to that account will see them. If you want to share the pics you can attach them to a pose with the paperclip icon in the Post Reply window or else stick them on Imgur and post those links in IMG tags.

Here's Abitibi, launched in 1938 as a tug.

    abitibisteeltug-1998renebeauchamp.jpg

Still going today, after some extensive refits (and possibly a hull lengthening? I can't really tell), as a dinner cruise boat in Vancouver.

Sunset Cruise by Duncan Rawlinson - Duncan.co - @thelastminute, on Flickr

I used to see it every day at work, I always thought it had so much potential to be a very good looking ship, if not for the ugly windows and decks thrown onto it at some stage.
