I wonder why the deck railings are all folded inwards - you would not be wanting to fall into those cold waters i'm thinking.

Safety line is rigged inside of the railing area if you look carefully.

Ah yes, I see it now. Difficult to see that line when I have my browser at 1/3 size to cover the fact i'm supposed to be working and not surfing. Thinking about the railings, perhaps it is to ensure a better field of fire for the gun turret.

Given they're up north would it be to prevent excessive ice build up from spray?

Spare prop on the deck ?

    I saw that straightaway too!
Is it carried just so you have the right parts available when you get in to port after an incident or can it be changed at sea?
I know all sorts of magic can be achieved at sea, even partial engine stripdowns, but props seem a bit too far?

Stumbled on this thread by accident. Amazing, took a trip to Tarifa this year, headed across to Morocco. Kids (especially the boy) were fascinated with the monster cargo ships looming out of the morning mist every day! Can't wait to show him this thread!

Thanks and keep them coming. Particular thanks to ship workers contributions of (what seems to them) a normal day in the office.

It'd be a question for a marine engineer, but I expect it's to do with the expeditious repair in the event of a grounding etc. I know that the Irish Ferries ship Ulysses has (or had) a spare secured deep down on the lowest truck deck.

I see the QM2 carries spare blades for her props too

But most definitely a job for dry docking only.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
