Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was looking at at VW passat for sale. It had an NCT disc on display with expiry date but at the bottom it said EXEMPT/SPECIAL. Any why a 2006 Passat would have this?
    thanks!!

    Haha.
Real answer may have been a car owned by an embassy

This is probably a bit too obvious but did you ask the seller?

Sounds stange, since it's hardly an ex-Garda/Fire Service/Defence Forces car? Not sure what else is NCT exempt.

Island vehicles are exempt but they wouldn't get a disc to say exempt on it, they simply don't have to do the test and are not required to show a disc.

actually didnt ask the seller since the offer with the trade in wasnt a runner for me. and no, it was not the tax disc! i should have taken a pic of it!

Have seen this with another car. Cant remember the exact reason, but it didn't require a DOE or an NCT, seemingly could not be identified as either private or commerical for some strange reason.

Dont ask me to explain as was confused enough with the explanation. Was not ex service (as far as I know), or an island car.

    No, that's not right.
On every NCT disc is indicated "motor taxation class", which is the same as found in your registration certificate field J.2
In most cases it says "private" and that's exactly what most people have printed on NCT disc.

If someone is exempt from motortax (f.e. Disabled person) then motor taxation class is "exempt/special", and that's why it's written on NCT disc.

However it doesn't mean that car is exempt from NCT.
It's exempt from tax, but NCT must be done the same as with any other car, and if it's got a NCT disc, then surely NCT was done on this car.

Could you support it with any link to the source.

AFAIK this is the list of NCT exempt vehicles
    Nothing mentioned about embassy's cars.
    (5) This Regulation does not apply to a vehicle—

    (b) which is used solely on an off-shore island,

    (c) on the day on which a test certificate in respect of the vehicle had been refused, or

    (d) which is owned or operated by the Garda Síochána or the Defence Forces.
