Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's on Sky Sports atm.. There's a lad wearing a bomber jacket and sunglasses playing.

lol.. he looks like such a plonker sat there under the sweltering heat from the studio lights. I'd be surprised if he doesn't die before finishing the next hand.

This **** should not be considered to be a sport.. seriously, wtf is wrong with people?

Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

So no its not a sport, more a game.

Sport doesn't have to be physical.

Poker is not a sport, it's gambling. And that's coming from the mouth of a poker player.

No. Poker is a head wrecker of a game.

I suppose, Chess can be exhausting and very physically demanding, believe it or not, the top masters all have a regiment of gym time and fitness training, the same with racing drivers.

A great game at that but definitely not a sport.

well in fairnes it's more suited to sky sports then "16 and pregnant " is to MTV, or "ice road truckers " is to the history channel.

Till I get drunk then I lose my shirt, I sometimes play with my brothers and cousins, its always the same, I win and win then start betting on the blind and believing the alcohol that I will get the royal flush this time.

    How. Dare. You.

I'd like to see Jonny Sexton drink 17 pints and then try and land a conversion from the touchline. Sure, Phil Taylor might not be able to run 100m in 4 seconds, or dribble around 10 players and slot the ball in the bottom corner, but he is an athlete dammit!

I'm not sure! I really wish it was though as it would make watching it more interesting. I don't play or watch it so I haven't a clue what the hell I was on about more of a play on the terms......... Like that bit in Bill Baileys stand up when he's on about dentists and their own lingo. I could link the youtube vid but I'm too lazy.

Play 14 hours of poker 3 days in a row (as I have) and then tell me its not physically exerting!! :) I know a lot of pros and while some of them are slobs, the majority are fit and will spent time in a gym when not playing, specifically to be fit enough to play.

All that said, I personally wouldnt call it a "sport", I would call it a game.

I wouldnt call it gambling, because its a game of partial skill and partial information so while it has elements of luck, it isnt like roulette or dice. Additionally I use "Gambling" to refer to games of chance where you are against the odds (ie: likely to lose over any long period).... thats not necessarily true of poker.

"I dont gamble, but the people who sit with me do!" Stu Ungar, 3 time world champion.

Chess is mist definitely not a sport, I've played enough of it (I was the best in my school years ago until I started smoking, I gave it up so I could smoke during my breaks in Mondays and Thursdays).
E- sports? Are they played on a computer?
I agree with you on mud race driving though.

How come Boards.ie doesn't have a poker 'home game'?

    Pokerstars.com will facilitate it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 173 ✭✭kingtubby

Not sure if I'd call it a sport but some people who make big money in the game deserve serious respect for their skills and determination.

Take for instance Randy "nanonoko" Lew.He plays up to 24 tables of mid to high stakes online poker simultaneously and has made millions of dollars in the process. His winrate is extremely consistent. The amount of concentration and high level thinking to do this is truly amazing and playing for hours at this rate must be both mentally and physically exhausting!

There used to be many many Boards poker games. The poker forum was THE irish poker forum.

But then a load of... stuff..... happened and now the whole community have moved on! The poker forum here is all but dead!

    Not so.

Good poker players are skilled at the game. Bad poker players lose their money to them.

Its akin to Chess - a mental sport. Does all sport have to be physical? Is it better to be able to throw something far than to master someone intellectually? What is sport?

    I'd say sport = Physical

    Game = Mental

true, there's a little bit of decision power in poker while there's none in bingo. Still, two games with random draws where success depends entirely on what cards or numbers your opponents have.. Enter probability theory (exit me because it drives me nuts)

You're entirely under playing how important decision making is. it's the most important thing. It's all about maths, odds, probability, stack sizes, yours and your opponents, position, table image, again yours and your opponents, playing styles, playing against the man mentally..............

it's a very complex game. it's easy to learn to play yeah, but it takes a LONG TIME to become good at it. Anyone who doesn't understand just what it takes to become a poker player has never tried it. And those who rely on it being a game of just random draws are the ones the good players love to see sitting down at their table ;)

In fact, this year Poker was added to the World Mind Games. A variation whereby players sitting in particular seats get dealt the same hand as the person in their equivilant seat at different tables (For example: The guy sitting in Seat 8 at Table C will have the same hand as the guy sitting in Seat 8 on Table A). The luck element is removed as players are scored on how better they played the hand than their counter parts.

Luck is removed in traditional poker in the long run too.

Wait... that seems like a daft game because players will..

    1. be up against different opponents
    2. have different styles TAG v LAG for example
    3. Might have different chip counts or bank rolls
    4. have skill measured in the short term

I'm guessing it didn't take off? Haven't seen it on the TV and I watch a fair bit of poker.

December was the first time it was tried and the event was non-televised.

A good way of showing the skill involved though.
