Coke Causes cancer?

Just came across this story on BBC:
Coke and Pepsi alter recipe to avoid cancer warning

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo account for nearly 90% of the US fizzy drink market
Coca-Cola and Pepsi are changing the recipes for their drinks to avoid being legally obliged to put a cancer warning label on the bottle.

The new recipe for caramel colouring in the drinks has less 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) - a chemical which California has added to its list of carcinogens.

LSD cures alcoholism, weed cures cancer and ecstasy cures PTSD.

Coke causes cancer, tobacco causes cancer and alcohol causes liver failure.

Somewhere down the line we made a very big mistake.

Read it earlier. Does it not say you need to drink 100+ cans a day to get near the amount givento rats. Non story really. Smoking gives you cancer yet the majority of people still do it. Wont put me off my can of coke

I lived in California for a year, where this story is from, the building I lived in had a cancer warning on it and it was brand new. California puts these cancer warnings on everything, it is ridiculous. Asbestos actually causes cancer, not the building I lived it, or Pepsi or Coke or any number of ridiculous numbers of warnings in Cali. Something as serious as cancer shouldn't end up as a joke because of 'boy who cried wolf' hysterics in California labelling everything including actually dangerous substances.

Being alive causes inevitable death! Stop living now and save yourself!

MDMA is one of the safest (and best) drugs known. It is madness that it is illegal.

    This is f*cking retarded.

Having too much of anything is bad for you, everyone knows that.

    E.G. Water Intoxication.
    http://articles.latimes.com/2007/jan/14/local/me-water14

Or staying out in the Sun is bad for you too, are they going to start putting warnings on Water and Signs all over the place to warn about the sun.

WTF is the world coming to.

I want coke and a King Creole.

A King Creole is a pita bread with mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, griddled spicy chicken breast garnished with a handful of chips.

    Yummers.

    'Cures'?

If weed cured cancer I'd think I'd know.

It can help in the treatment of cancer as could LSD, but it doesn't cure it. :pac:

Ecstasy doesn't cure PTSD, it could treat it but not cure it.

I think it's important to put this into perspective. Any roast food or baked goods could contain this chemical. It's not some weird additive, it's a product of cooking!

I think it adds to the satisfaction of being a hugely overpaid CEO for a very successful company if you secretly know your product is killing poor people.

    http://consumerist.com/2012/03/coke-clarifies-that-it-is-not-changing-its-recipe-in-wake-of-study.html
We have directed our caramel suppliers to make the necessary manufacturing process modification to meet the requirement of the State of California's Prop 65. That process change ensures that no warning label would be required on our products. We firmly believe that there is no public health risk that justifies any such change, but we did ask our caramel suppliers to take this step so that our products would not be subject to the requirement of a scientifically unfounded warning. Now, it's important to note that while we have asked our caramel suppliers to modify their manufacturing processes, those modifications do not change our product. The caramel color in all of our products has been, is and always will be safe.
The FDA isn't totally onboard with the CPSI, however, saying in a statement that they're reading the new petition, but that "it is important to understand that a consumer would have to consume well over a thousand cans of soda a day to reach the doses administered in the studies that have shown links to cancer in rodents."

Oh and the BBC even reports the recipe won't change *at all* in Europe:
In a statement Coca-Cola added that the manufacturing process across Europe would not change.

It said that apart from California "not one single regulatory agency around the world considers the exposure of the public to 4-MEI as present in caramels as an issue".
