A MAN "freaked out" and repeatedly stabbed another man in the back when he found him in bed with his 15-year-old girlfriend, a coroner's court heard yesterday.

Shane O'Riordan told an inquest he could not remember how many times he stabbed James Brazier in the back.

He attacked after turning on the light in a room to find Mr Brazier (30) in his underwear in bed with O'Riordan's girlfriend, who was "down to her thong".

O'Riordan was 19 at the time.

Mr Brazier, also known as 'English Jim' -- was pronounced dead at Kerry General Hospital on April 15, 2007.

He had been stabbed 12 times in the back and also suffered extensive bruising to the head.

O'Riordan and his brother Gerard, of Arbutus Grove, Killarney, are both currently serving sentences for his manslaughter.

They attended the coroner's court in Tralee yesterday.

Shane O'Riordan's deposition was read out by north Kerry coroner, Helen Lucey.

He said he picked up a knife that was on the bedside locker and began stabbing Mr Brazier in the back. He said it had not been his intention to kill him.

His brother, Gerard O'Riordan, said both brothers had been out drinking earlier and Shane had borrowed his phone to contact his girlfriend Yoshiko Scanlon.

When he didn't get a reply, they decided to call to her house at Pinewood Estate in the town, where her young brother let them in.

"We saw Jimmy (Brazier) and Shiko practically naked in the bed. I punched him a few times in the back and then Shane jumped on the bed and started stabbing him in the back.

"He just freaked out, like," Gerard O'Riordan said. He then dragged Mr Brazier off the bed and started to beat him with a chair until Margaret Scanlon, the mother of Yoshiko, came into the room and shouted at them to leave.

Shane O'Riordan was also shouting abuse at his girlfriend, saying: "You're nothing but a slut".

Evidence was heard by gardai and paramedics that when they called to the house Mr Brazier was still alive and was "crawling on the floor, trying to get up" and moaning.

Doctors worked on Mr Brazier for over one hour but he then went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 4.58am.

His body was identified later that morning by his mother, Margaret Spears.

The jury returned a verdict of death caused by haemorrhage and shock and collapse of the lung due to multiple stab wounds constituting manslaughter, in accordance with the verdict of the central criminal court.

In 2009, both brothers were sentenced to 14 years for manslaughter. Gerard O'Riordan had 18 months of his sentence suspended while Shane O'Riordan had five years suspended.

I can't comment on a dead man but the boyfriend in this situation, Why wasn't this guy charged and convicted with rape too?

He was 19 and dating a 15 year old at the time. Age of consent is 17 in this country. Another thing is how did the parents of this child let guys that age into the house with this teenager?

Call me old fashioned whatever but 15 year old girls are meant to be going out with they're friends to the cinema, hanging out etc (what it use to be in our days) Not taking advantage by from old men. The state needs to do more to protect children from pedophiles like this. The parents of this girl should also be tried for child neglect.

you're right, children should be monitored by the state at all times, especially when in their own homes under parental supervision, and should only ever engage in state-approved activities and have state-approved friends.

Seriously, what do you think the state could have done to stop this?

Well what parent would let their daughter bring a 30 year old into her bedroom? The state should be prosecuting parents who let this happen for neglect.

paedophilia is a sexual interest with prepubescent children. It's hard to tell much of anything from the article but I think it's safe to say a 15 year old girl with a 19 year old boyfriend, caught in bed with a 30 year old man is not exactly prepubescent

Still its illegal and at 19 and 30 you would want to be really sick in the head to find a 15 year old attractive.

There was a case about a year ago, two 14 year olds slept together and the boy was charged with having sex with a girl underage even though he was the same age of the girl. So if a 16 year old is caught with a 18 year old i would imagine the same would apply if the age of consent is 17.


All im saying is why aren't the parents of this child charged with neglect. They obviously knew this girl was sleeping around.

They probably had no evidence to charge him with it. Why would it matter though? It's not like he'd get more time than he did for the stabbing.

Maybe thats why he did it , he was upset because she was making him wait.
