Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. They did'nt need it over the centuries because they struggled to live but people do need exercise
and one possibly good argument for the big events is Social .They bring people from across the globe together and that's good .It's the pressures on young women that i'm against when they have so many other things to cope with that previous generations had'nt .Life is very complex when it should be simpler .

    LOLOLOLOLOL.

So modern women should be spared the rigors of athletic competition because it is too much pressure on them? How do you think training for a swim meet compares with to having to haul water, chop wood, scrub floors, forage for food, and the other myriad physical tasks that our female ancestors had to deal with on a daily basis? Because most of them didn't spend the previous centuries fanning themselves on chaise lounges whilst eating bon bons.

And what does this have to do with the Saudis anyway?

If she wants to be like that, that's her own choice. Her choices in life should not be dictated to her by some guys who think they know what's best for women.

    paddyandy wrote: »

Those laws were stupid because they were about banning adults from taking part in sport. They were probably inspired by the need to keep women in the cooking, cleaning and babymaking industry.

Are you saying that we shouldn't criticise the Saudis? I disagree. You're the second person i've seen in this thread with the opinion that only those with a perfect record can criticise the Saudi treatment of women. No country is perfect but that doesn't mean that a citizen from an imperfect country shouldn't point and laugh at a government whose views are pointable and laughable.

Also, I've never told a woman what she can or can't do with her body.

The Saudis now and McQuaid years ago were concerned with subjugating women, not protecting them from becoming masculine - lol tbh.

And women get involved in fitness because they enjoy it, not because of some conspiracy - hilarious that someone is offended that some women don't look hot enough for him.

Btw, spot on, Mcmoustache. This thing of "We can't criticise other countries because similar happened here" - self flagellating, illogical nonsense IMO. We are not responsible just because we're Irish - imbuing responsibility purely because of nationality, well look at what that kind of thinking has led to... Most of us were not even alive during the McQuaid era. And most of us condemn it. How we're being hypocrites is beyond me.
"I won't criticise the Saudi regime because of similar-ish policy in Ireland fifty years ago" would be a joke of a thing to say. I'm sure plenty of Saudi people are critical of the regime also. Oppression is oppression.

Actually when fit we are one of the best long distance endurance hunters on the planet. Our niche is that we can chase down prey during the heat of the day, being hairless we can loose heat faster while they die of heat exhaustion.

We are just about the only animal that can run twenty miles, cross a river and climb a tree. They used to chase down kangaroos on foot in Oz.

Some animals could compete in the track events. We'd wipe them in the field events. And the swimming with the named strokes. And almost all the stuff that required equipment.

Humans would beat any other species, and without checking all the sports , we'd lead on total medals too.

I use Ireland as an example of how things can evolve, especially in hindsight when we look at the crux year where spcoe

Evolution is a far safer thing than revolution. Certainly, there is the initial euphoria regarding the events of the Arab Spring in Libya, in Syria, in Egypt, in Bahrain, but the problem is, and it will contradict my first paragraph to an extent is.....

Revolutions have a historic tendency to 'eat their own'.

Political Islam has also become poisonous when it integrates religion with the legal system. It leads to all kind of moral relativism and hypocrisy, and does grave harm to the cause of womans rights. God is great, its just the fan club is a mess.

Yeah, tennis emphasises the importance of female players looking sexy for male viewers, not being a competitive sport. Btw if you maintain female tennis players are all curvy and feminine, four words for you: Venus and Serena Williams.

But anyway, I'll make sure that women all over the world get the memo: look sexy for Paddyandy, don't do what you want to do yourself.

From less than 60 years ago in Ireland, John Charles McQuaid's Lenten Regulations (from Bock the Robber http://bocktherobber.com/2012/02/lenten-regulations-john-charles-mcquaid/)

We take occasion to express our grave disapproval of the practice which has begun to show itself of permitting young women to compete in cycling and athletics in mixed public sports.

Pope Pius XI, emphasising the rules for separation of the sexes which the law of nature and Christian prudence demand, has declared: ‘These rules must be observed also in athletics and gymnastic exercises, where special precaution must be taken in regard to Christian modesty in the case of girls, inasmuch as it is extremely unbecoming for them to display themselves before the public gaze’. (Encyclical Letter, “Divini Illius Magisti”.)

    People in glasshouses etc...

The difference was, despite his best efforts, he was just the Archbishop of Dublin. These were CHURCH INTERNAL RULES and nothing to do with the general public or national law in Ireland.

Admittedly, in the 1950s there was a lot of confusion about this at the time, but the Catholic Church was just an overly-powerful arrogant lobbyist. It was never part of Government.

The issue was that the Government at the time was absolutely cowardly and tended to do go with the populist option, which at that time was ultra-conservative Catholic.

Ireland was at no stage a dictatorship. The problem was that a somewhat nutty electorate kept voting in a very conservative version of Fianna Fail. Nobody was making them do that!

Saudi Arabia on the other hand is a theocracy with almost no real democracy and absolutely no women's rights. It has almost no concept of civil law either.

The two situations are not remotely comparable.

You could compare Ireland in the 1950s to parts of the conservative US in the '50s or even England.

Ireland just had a Catholic flavour of post-Victorian puritanical conservatism.

I think in Ireland, we've a tendency to forget that the country has actually got pretty sound constitutional foundations, even if the Church was somewhat abusing its influence over the political system in the past.

Despite everything, we are one of the oldest and longest running continuous democracies in the world. Democracy in Ireland didn't start after independence. We had full parliamentary democracy as part of the UK since 1801 and the Irish parliament, flawed and all as it may have been in terms of sufferage, existed continuously for centuries before that.

We basically had a civil war / war of Independence, within a democratic state (i.e. what was the UK then) and declared independence while continuing democracy and strengthening it further.

    It's a relatively unusual situation.

So, we're about as comparable with Saudi as we are with medieval Spain to be perfectly honest

Excellent post Solair. One of the most annoying things about any debate on Boards is the inevitable (and usually ill informed) 'whataboutery' of the moral relativists who contend that nobody can judge the behavior of anybody else on the basis of our own past transgressions, or even those of somebody else that has nothing to do with us. (I await the inevitable ‘but the US bombed Iraq response!’).
The Saudi's are scum. Pure and simple, I'd I be happy to leave them to their scumbaggery if only they could refrain from spreading it everywhere they go, because Saudi's money spreads across the globe, funding everything from Madrasas in Pakistan to building the mosque in Clonskeagh in Dublin. And with Saudi money of course comes their pernicious and twisted form of Islam (Wahhabism) that is both regressive and destructive and now as pervasive as Saudi cash. So as far as I'm concerned they should be turned away from every international stage when they insist on behaving in this manner, there is an Olympic ethos and they can either abide by it or piss off.

Obviously they like showjumping because the woman is almost entirely clothed, save for her face and hands.

Presumably they don't even allow women/girls to do things like running, lest some woman dare to wear suitable clothing in public.

So much wrong with that paragraph that it's hard to know where to start.
