I am living in Australia, the skangers can usually be spotted by the bad haircuts, burned skin and general demeanour. From my experience, lads that are wearing a counties gah shorts usually got them from playing with the county and generally they arent "skangers". Not many skangers go out and by their county teams shorts.

You're right, they nick them ;)

So it's ok to state "No Irish" on the basis of the rowdy Irish gimps (whom I'm not denying are plentiful)? Effectively making all Irish people accountable for their behaviour simply because they share their nationality?

So, I go to Australia for a year, I don't act the bollocks and I can't apply for this job because I share nationality with people to whom I've otherwise no connection with. Delightful. And of course a bunch of Irish people bending over and taking it...

Well yes it is ok because it's his business so he's entitled to hire who he wants. Why waste the time of Irish people if they have no chance of getting the job? Let them know from the get go that they won't be employed by him.

He's in the building trade so probably had Irish lads before who went out on the lash four or five nights a week, never showed up for their half day on a Saturday, and were constantly hungover. He doesn't want to repeat that experience and who can argue with him? It happens all the time on sites here.

It's no different to places in San Diego that won't rent to J1-ers. The bad apples have ruined it for others and it's not fair but that's the way it goes.

There are a lot of genuine hardworking irish people who have moved to australia to look for work but there are also a lot of complete wasters who create trouble everywhere they go. Theyre the sort that pissed every penny up against a wall when they were working, the ones you find fighting on the streets after nightclubs turf them out and the same ones that filled the courts with public order cases for the last number of years. I know of one town where the guards have literally nothing to do now at weekends as 20+ of the most prolific troublemakers have all left for australia/canada in the last 12 months or so but the sad thing is most of the useless f***ers will probably end up back here again when theyre thrown out of Oz/Canada.

I'm sure there are more than enough local Aussies that do the exact same thing. It's no excuse to condemn an entire nationality of people, based on the actions of a few.

It's not just 'not fair', it's illegal, even in Australia.

I've had the pleasure of living abroad, in the midst of a lot of Irish and the picture that's painted of them is no where near as bad as a lot of the reactionary posters make out.

Why are they all fine? They're a mixed bunch, like any nationality.
What's the above got to do with a sign saying "No Irish need apply"? You wouldn't be trying to troll the message that Irish people = "all drunken messers" now would you?

'It' being illegal is a bit of technicality, simply because he's advertised he doesn't want Irish.

So they know not to apply. Nobody's time is wasted. Fine (not fine, but you know).

It's OK for him to have the attitude he has (and keep it to himself) and let them apply and just not hire them/get back to them.

The last part is unfair. What he's did was illegal.

You can't really prevent this sort of thing whichever way you look at it. It's his business, he can do what he wants pretty much.

The guy was a fool to write the ad the way he did. Not only does he look like a racist bigot, but it allows everyone else to jump on the 'all Aussies are racist' bandwagon.

It is one guy, and one ad, let's keep it in perspective. The fact there is such an outcry is because it has been the first of its kind, no?

I am sure he is regretting being such a fool, regardless of whether he will ever admit it :D

I don't think anyone in the thread has suggested that 'all Aussies are racist' because of this. However, it's the 21st Century, this kind of thing has no place in modern society and we are allowed to be critical of it.

Considering the amount of people he will most likely have interested in the job he probably doesn't want to waste his time finding (in his opinion) the one good apple amongst all the bad ones.

I get why there's internet outrage here, Irish people are good at shouting from the rooftops about things that offend them, but it's still his business to do with what he wants.

He doesn't want Irish. If he didn't state as much he'd have a load of irish coming to the interview that had no hope of getting the job.

So it saves time for everyone, fairdincome I say to him.

The funny thing is this will blow over in a few dyas, if he said "NO BLACKS" every hippie dogooder pro-palestine muppet would be out in arms for months.

Bit dismissive to call it internet outrage, and I presume your "Irish people are good at" whatever doesn't apply to you, even though you're also Irish.
It's a discussion forum, an incident of discrimination against Irish people is being discussed as is fitting with the medium. Irish people aren't unreasonable for finding this objectionable. And you've obviously missed the significant number of simpering "Oh yeah it's fine to discriminate against Irish people" comments - from Irish people.

Actually - it isn't. Australia's Racial Discrimination Act of 1975 states that he does not have the right to do with it what he wants, when it comes to pre-judging someone for employment.

Thas the sort of attitude that resulted in the real austrailians being discriminated against when it came to jobs. The exact same line was given my business ect ect.

What are you hoping to achieve through posting all of his details - reprisals? You want the outraged Irish to bombard the man and his family with emails and telephone calls so he knows just how much you know of him and just how much you dislike him? You would get a kick out of intimidating and frightening not just a man you take issue with but also his loved ones?

For you to take up a position of moral outrage on this is laughable considering the insight into your character you are affording us with your posts.

Damn it, the ad was removed when I looked a minute ago, ah well I'll just have to be morally outraged anyway. Personally I'd rather our hard drinking Gaa idiots were exported, less of them here then. I've noticed some of my neighbours offspring who are in their mid 20's taking off to Australia and America for a few months of getting wasted(Job hunting) then back home again to mommy and daddy to get pissed on the dole money at weekends.

It shouldn't be a case of the Irish being offended by this, it should be everyone. It's an archaic practise, and we should not be offended just because it was Irish this time, but we can substitute Black, Asian, Eastern European, Aboriginal into the ad and still be offended.

If we start becoming lenient on this kind of bullshít, it will become more prevalent, so no, I don;t accept we should just ignore it, put our heads in the sand and forget it.

He can't discriminate based on their nationality. Therefore, he is obliged by law to give an unbiased hearing to everyone regardless of their nationality.

Moreover, if someone's application is rejected and they feel that it is based on racial or ethnic grounds, they have the right to bring it to a court of law.
